Share Your Videos / 60D RAW with an old takumar lens (Fixed)
« on: October 03, 2014, 08:58:48 AM »
Just got a new, errr, old smc takumar 55/1.8 from circa 1970, all manual, for free, with a $10 adapter.

So I sneak up on my kids and shot them applying some fake tattoos.

Shot mostly at f/2 or so. Conformed and graded on resolve lite 11 with film convert, edited on FCP X.

Comments are welcomed!

Bad pixels gone from 60D footage!
(I'm getting emotional now, I know)

Please don't make it disappear! please!

Only one thing need to perfection - batch conversion from the GUI.
This is all I ask.

Great Job!

Great work!

You're wellcome!

Thank you very much indeed!

After the rain, the sky seems to be painted in water colors.

Shot RAW on a 60D, with some sigma lenses, and the ML zoom function, which turned a 70-200 into a 600mm lens - so long that you can see the moon moves across the sky.

Conformed and graded with davinci resolve + FilmConvert, Edited with FCP 10.1

here is a link to the youtube version - which sucks horribly. Clearly, I know youtube has a BIG problem with low light and/or dark and/or grainy videos - but this is too much. just looks at those dark backgrounds:

Gotta love the ML zoom function - it turned my humble 24-70/2.8 into a 24-210 super zoom - with a fixed 2/8 aperture, but with a deep depth of field of 70!

These shots came out really nice - sharp and clean, way more than any H264. The Raw 720p version looks like h264 at 1080 - the Raw 1080 looks far better.

Shot RAW on a 60D, conformed and graded with davinci resolve, edited on FCP 10.1. No Film Convert this time.

Music: "Aquarium" form Saint-Sans "The carnival of the Animals", arranged by myself (!) with Logic X.

Well, Sarotaz, I haven't gone so far...
But yeah, basically, under the right circumstances, RAW is comparable to h264 at almost twice the size.

Gladly, I haven't seen this problem...
That special version of raw2dng is, unfortunately, windows only, and, fortunately, I work on a mac.

Technically, your'e right.
However, you miss the point: This example is not about how I managed to squeeze 4K out of a 60D, but to show how flexible RAW format can be.
I do not recommend upscaling to 4K. In fact, I can only recommend using 4K with a high quality codec, like ProRes or RAW, preferably in 444.
Shooting 4K in h264, or 420, you'll get an image that is not much better than  upscaled 1080 RAW image, like my example. Shooting in 422 might get you better results - somewhere in between, but still, it'll be harder in post.

Workflow was actually quite simple:
1. shot raw on the 60D (duh). I'm using a special build from september, which solve the dead pixels problem, search the 60D thread.
2. Using RAWMagic, I converted the raw "PS" file to DNG. I'm doing it directly from the card, without copying the raw files to the hard drive.
3. In resolve, I opened the DNG files, conformed and graded them. In this case, I created a project in UHD resolution, and tweaked the "Image Size" tab options until it looked the best.
4. Export from resolve using ProRes HQ.
5. import and edit them in FCP X.

Remark: you may get one or two strange pink frames at the beginning of a shot, just cut them out in resolve or your NLE.
Remark 2: I do not recommend upscaling HD to UHD! This was done as an exercise, to show how good and flexible RAW can be. In fact I don't recommend upscaling at all. It is a very bad way to shot UHD...

But it is in 4K (well, UHD)...
You should download the original fie, which is in 4K, err, UHD.
How will you play it? I have no idea...

BTW: you can watch it now in 1080 - but it'll look just like a regular 1080. to really get the idea. download the original 4K file.

A series of 4K (well, UHD) RAW test shots I shot on my backyard on my 60D.

Well, of course I'm cheating...

This is basically an upscale test, to prove that a good RAW HD footage, can be upscaled to 4K and still look good.

These were shot at Regular RAW with my 60D - some shots at 1728 pixels wide, and some at full 1920 using ML x3 zoom function.
Conformed and graded on davinci resolve, and then upscaled to UHD (3840x2160) with some tweaking on resolve "Image Scaling" section. otherwise, no effects or sharpening were applied.

Some shots were upscaled really really nice - some were not, but still look, in my opinion, better than any H264 video at 4K.

Exported in ProRes HQ in UHD (Huge Files almost 10GB total for this 1 minute clip). and edited on FCP X.

For your pleasure, you can download the original clip at full UHD glory, and judge for yourself.

Thanks bennyray1!

Could you upload an image with noise?

In x3 zoom mode, the image become more sensitive - for better or worse: if the "regular" image is noisy, the zoomed image will be have even more noise. if the regular is clean, the zoomed one will be even clearer.

Now, what cam make noise an image? Barring technical problem (Bad sensor or lens) noise almost always, comes for either poor lighting and/or high iso - and usually a combination of both. The 60D does not have a great low light performance to begin with, in regular h264 video: iso 1600 is acceptable, 3200 is borderline. In RAW, this is even more so.
So, how do you lower you noise?
1. use better lighting;
2. use a wider aperture;
3. lower you ISO;
4. Use some noise canceling in post, such as neat video.
5. Hide the noise with some filter - A film grain filter like Film Convert (which I almost always use) is a great option.
6. A combination of the above;

Also, use the ETTR function in ML: if, after you start ETTR (by pressing SET button usually) you get ISO higher than 1600, you better step backward and change something.

The above clip was shot in broad daylight, at iso 100, with an aperture of about f/8 (and using a fader ND to keep the aperture at 8, which is the optimum for my lens). so, no problem of noise here. I did use film convert - but only for the look, not for the noise.

here is an example of video with lots of noise:
As i mention in the description, I didn't use film convert or the like to cancel noise - which you can clearly see on many shots. Try to guess when the zoom function was used - I think the answer is quiet easy.

One the nicest thing in shooting RAW with Magic Lantern is the 3X zoom function.

Basically, it means your lens gets a 3X extender - with the same speed and the same DOF.

In this video, I used a single 24-70/2.8 sigma lens - which act like a 24-200/2.8! No 70-200 needed!

Great Stuff!

Somewhat heavy on the effects and coloring - and youtube sure don't help you - but still great stuff!

of he doesn't look sick: he got two medicines: a painkiller and his favorite shoe on tv!

watch his eyes on the close ups: you can see the TV blinking and his pupils adjust - thats how sharp the RAW image is. I would've never got it with h264.

Several days ago my son was sick and stayed at home. While he was watching TV, I snick up on him and took several shot in RAW, while also using 3X crop zoom, and ETTR.

Well, is seems these ML functions work...

Shot entirely on a 60D, at a local tourist spot during sunset.

Shot at 1728 and blowed up to 1920 (no problem - still looks way sharper and nicer than H264).
Conformed and grade on davinci resolve with film convert, edited on FCP X.

I've done this video mainly to test the 60D Raw high iso performance, which is only so-so above 1250 - but hey, it was inside the grottos, which are not exactly very well lit.

Overall, I have to say I really, really like these 60D raw capabilities, which truly give an entirely new dimension for my warm - and a new life for my 60D.
