If you have coding skills and are willing to help with 7D crop recording development, it might be a good idea to send a PM to Dfort and offer him your help.  I am sure, he will greatly appreciate that and will be able to give you some useful directions on how to proceed and what to do so that your help is efficient.

I have just now done that, thanks.

I think to get lossless working correctly I need to have a deep dive into the silent module and figure out a way to get the lossless compression working there as that seems a more sensible place to start for me being relatively new to the codebase. At a glance it definitely looks like if I make progress with the silent module (by extension lossless logic) that the lossless 14-bit compression should work on the 7D with a few minimal tweaks. Time will tell, I'll have a stab at it over the weekend as I am very eager to breathe new life into the 7D I picked up yesterday.

I have done some poking around on dfort's fork. Is the crop_rec_4k_5D2_7D branch the best one for progress? I'm keen to see if I can spend some hours seeing how to tackle the problems. So far I have things building which is relatively painless thanks to all the resources available.

Raw Video / Re: Canon 7D in 2018
October 05, 2018, 12:36:32 AM
I've looked at the thread in detail, and had done before. Though there's some 1500 posts there, I hoped to consolidate some of it here as I'd spent over 8 hours trying to assess the current state of ML for the 7D and still feel unable to paint a full picture now (hence my post). I love the 7D and am glad to have purchased, the fact that my 650D appears to be more useful in ML now with the compression that's available leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth - so I'm definitely keen to help progress ML on the 7D.

Raw Video / Canon 7D in 2018

I've just purchased a used Canon 7D for little over £200. After seeing various recommendations only mentioning that it is one of the best ASP-C cameras with support for magic lantern.

My understanding is that this is mostly due to the CF interface, supporting up to around 80MB/s RW through a decent UDMA card. I have used a 650D with magic lantern and found that 14-bit compressed footage to be really great. But as with many potential ML users, finding a reasonable up-to-date chart of each camera's capabilities with modern builds from '17-'18 has been difficult.

To 7D users, what can I expect from my 7D in terms of magic lantern performance? I apologise for the long post, I just have a lot of questions and I'd like to update my post with your feedback to help further potential 7D users understand what to expect from a recent ML build in 2018.

  • Is the maximum live-view resolution still 1728 x 972 (at 16:9) without crop_rec? Yes
  • Is 14-bit compressed MLV supported? What about 12-bit compressed? Not right now
  • What is the maximum resolution with crop_rec?
  • Is there any way to do pixel binning instead of line skipping on the 7D?
Updated 4th October 2018.

Is the 7D regarded as the best ASP-C ML camera because of the CF interface only? Or is there something else I'm not aware of. I'll update this post with my findings too once I have the camera - I'm not afraid to break it so I'll be adventurous.

The 650D, 700D and 100D appear to be better for ML right now it seems as they can make use of compressed raw and are more stable on the latest nightly branches.

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 1200D

Hi,
I am able to set CBR under values less then 1 (e.g. 0.5) and record something, but I can't find 1920x1080/30p. Do you mean 30 fps? If yes then there I have only 1920x25, 1920x24, 1280x50, 640x25 modes. I am not working with video staff here but can test something if needed. Probably 30p can be achieved by some haks in ML.

This can be achieved by setting your region settings in the canon MENU to NTSC instead of PAL.

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 1200D

I bought one of these secondhand today for £100 for shooting B-roll in some silly little video projects me and my buddies are doing.

I've installed ML successfully, benchmarks show this as capping out at 21MB/s, my temp 16GB Sandisk Ultra card doesn't write fast enough to saturate that but I assume with the 21MB/s read speed cap that this camera can't exceed 20MB/s write speed? Therefore it is suited for sub-720p ML Raw.

Has anyone had any experiences contrary to my assumption above?

General Chat / Upgrade path from the 650D.
December 19, 2017, 02:21:05 PM
I originally had a 1300D, which I sold and bought a secondhand 650D with. This personally was a great decision, as it allowed me to use ML and record long enough cuts of 1600x900 raw at 24fps if I use 10-bit colour.

I'm travelling to Japan in 2 months, this has been a dream of mine for nigh on 9 years now and I want to take what I've learnt in terms of photography and take some great shots and clips, I have 5 ASP-C lenses, all Canon glass, is there any logical progression from the 650D where ML is supported?

The 200D has some really impressive benchmarks but is not supported, and it appears the only cameras which would offer any significant improvement are full frame (5D MK3), this is also a bit above my budget. I have about £500 to spend.

General Help Q&A / Canon 1300D/Rebel T6
February 09, 2017, 04:51:36 PM
So I know there has been some success in running ML on the 1200D/T5, I do not know if the port is actively being maintained but I would like to understand what the state of play is for working with the 1300D. I bought a Canon 1300D recently and hoped to use ML on it.

After a quick google search I don't believe there has been any substantial development work gone into running ML on the 1300D, short of some ROM dumps and people asking the same old questions. I'm a developer and have experience dealing with embedded systems and reverse engineering bespoke chips, but I don't have tons of time to dedicate to getting this to work. That's why I've started this thread, before I get my teeth into it, I want to know what success there has been already and what known stumbling blocks there have been in getting ML to run on the 1300D.

Speculatively, I can imagine that the main differences between the T5 and T6 are unfortunately mostly software, the T6 features a DIGIC 4+ chip, which is not featured in any other camera but since the T6 offers new NFC and WiFi capabilities the hardware and firmware will potentially have subtle differences.

Where are we at with the 1300D, is there an active effort that I have not identified yet? I would like to apply myself to getting the 1300D working with ML but will not have access to the 1300D for a few days, in my downtime I want to make sure I am setting off on the right foot.
