I bought a Marshall Mini ballhead http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CNPK3M/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i01 so I could mount my iPhone onto my hotshoe of my Canon 60D/7D so I can do live video via Ustream while shooting video with the HDSLR. The problem with the set-up is that the phone weighs quite a bit and you really have to tighten down the tiny ballhead control to prevent any unwanted movement. Granted I was moving around and not shooting on a tripod so things tended to go with gravity.

My set-up was:

  • Canon 60D
  • hotshoe extension to allow more than 1 coldshoe device
  • Left: Marshall mini ballhead with iPhone mount & iPhone 4 Right: Rode VideoMic on right.

This was a lot of top-heavy weight. If I was shooting on a tripod without quick movement it would probably be okay but with 4 swivel points (extension-hotshoe foot, bottom of mini-ballhead, ballhead itself, iPhone mount to ballhead) it's easy to get wonky. The iPhone mount to ballhead shouldn't be a swivel point but gets to be that way unless you really tighten things down.

I may do another shoot this week with the set-up on a tripod.

How do you mount a device to this that does not have the screw mount on the bottom?  Most LCD field monitors have these, but alas tablets do not.  In the perfect world, the mount would be adjustable and could fit my Galaxy S3 and my 7" Tablet.   :)

Thanks for the reply.

Not sure on the FPS on the S3 vs S2. I know that my S3 handles DSLR Controller ligtly better than my 7" tablet, so my guess is that the S3 would perform a little better (newer CPU and the like).

If you are planning on getting an SII or SIII, consider getting one soon as Apple is trying to ban the sales of these two Samsung phones....

My galaxy S3 is getting around 10-15FPS when connected to DSLR Controller, which, for me, is fast enough. What you need is a microUSB OTG (on the go) cable that converts the micro output of the phone into a female USB port.  FOr this to work, your Android device must support USB Hosting (ability to connect a USB mouse, thumb drive, etc.).

I am using this OTG cable....

Hope that helps.

Works great with my 60D and my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone as well.

Two main Android apps can do this...

DSLR Controller and MLController...

It essentially makes your android tablet/phone into a field monitor with (almost.. ~15fps) realtime live view on the device (depending on how powerful the device is) with the ability to control the camera (focus, exposure, etc) by touching the android screen and not the camera itself.
I use with my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone as well which give me an extra inch of screen real estate over the 60D screen, and means I dont have to hunch over the tripod to see what I am doing, hence why I am trying to find a mounting solution for me tablet.  :)

I would love to mount my 7" tablet to the hotshoe of my cam using a mini ball head, but have no idea on what kind of device would mount the tablet to the ballhead screw..

Anyone ever see one of these or have suggestions on what to do?

Thanks for the help.

I have had a previous issue with bracketing on my 60D if "mirror lockup" was activated in ML.

Also, try turning off live view before taking the brackets.  I find that sometimes with LV on, it doubles up on the first couple of exposures.

Hardware and Accessories / Re: DSLR Host Controller?

I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII, and am using DSLR Controller from Chainfire.  All I had to do was buy a OTG cable ($5) and simply plug it in to my phone/60D.  Works like a charm.

Now I just have to find a way to mount my phone to the hotshoe somehow...

I am using a 60D, and have a 16gb Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mb/sec card.  I am able to get 3x on 1080p24fps about 75% of the time unless there is alot of action happening on screen and the iso is low.

If it is really busy, higher iso value, then setting it to 2.6 keeps the buffer from stopping.

With HDR mode, I shoot 720p@60fps, and keep the bitrate at 2.4 and it still goes.
FYI, with all these settings, I have audio disabled.

I also have a 8gb 45MB/sec extreme card from sandisk, and they pretty much give the exact same results as the 95MB card... go figure...  :-\

What camera do you have?

On my 60D, the default menu has Mirror Lock option, as well, Magic Lantern has this option....

Wow, 7 minutes pass and you have it already in there... A1ex, you are a machine / gentleman /scholar.

Thanks for the hookup.

Feature Requests / Re: Running two cameras in sync?
July 06, 2012, 08:55:39 AM
This would not be a production bullet proof solution by any means, but it should allow pictures and videos to start and stop at the same time.  Buy two sets of RF remotes (like the Yong Nuo RF-603 I have with my 60D).

You can set the frequency the same to each of these sets, which should capture pics and start/stop video in sync with one another.  I cannot attest to any micro-second accuracy or lag that may occur, but this is a somewhat cheap / fun way to at least test out.

Worst thing is though, you need to change the settings on both cameras everytime you change anything like Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, etc.  This is where having a software writer / electrical engineer at your disposal would come in handy to make an interface / computer software to sync them with proper accuracy.

Just my two cents....

Been using ML well over a year, and I cannot imagine using my 60D without it.   I have one feature request regarding the HDR video though...

Currently, I can select ISO values only in values of 100.  I have read (and seen) many articles/videos on the internet regarding the 60D having LOWER noise on video ISO increments/multiples of 160.  For example... 160, 320, 640.. etc.  See this article for more....

Any chance of this getting the option to "micro adjust" into the next release?  Thanks again for all the hard work you guys...
