No not really, just check hos many exposures the the sensor/shutter made. I only by User from here on, to expensive new.. Regarding memory cards I would never buy used. Warranty is to important!

Fast and precise manual focusing is paramount to getting the best results from the manual Samyang lenses (and old but excellent lenses from other suppliers, ie. my belowed Nikkor-S 50mm 1.4.) But with the focusing screens supplied with modern digital cameras fast focusing can be a daunting task, especially if the light conditions are less than ideal. I have replaced the focusing screens in my two 5D mark III's with the EC-B focusing screen originally designed for the 5D mark II. The EC-B has a split-image field in center of the screen - and it works extremely well with lenses better than f3.5-4. The 5DIII is not primarily designed for exchangeability of the focusing screen, but the procedure is really straight forward and very simple.

I always convert mounted dngs with slimraw and put them on disk. Working directly with mounted dngs isn't stable with MLVFS on Windows either. It was pretty stable and faster with pismo but no support except standard 14bit raw there and mlvfs has all metadata handling working correctly.
Thanks for replying. I see the problem being much less hassle with converted DNGs of course, but since I really love MLVFS and virtual DNGs its a blast for storage and low budgets. So the solution to get it fixed again, it wasn't MLVFS but Davinci 14... Going back to 12.55 it works like a dream again.

Hi,

So I tried this evening with a new project, haven't filmed for a while. Now on a new computer, slower, but newer. Running latest MLVFS and Davinci 14.2. When I start Davinci MLVFS stops working, all files goes offline meanwhile Davincis running. When I reload MLVFS it works, then power Davinci and it goes offline.. Anyone experienced this? I can't seem to get around it? Do I need to use another tool than MLVFS?

MacOS Sierra 10.12.6
MLVs is compressed and normal MLVs.

General Help Q&A / In camera LUT for exposure?

Is there a possibility for this? I would love to make some good B&W LUTs and then in LIVE VIEW be able to expose (still mode) a frame to be able to get better outcomes. Is this possible in ML? I don't need LIVE VIEW while shooting video, this inquire is only for the exposure settings.

Well done. It's a nice video, well done slides and short depth of focus, or shall I say consistent choice of depth of focus. The place is nice, I did one corp vid, some time ago and the place was so ugly compared to yours, yours must have been a dream shooting in? Video had only one problem, couldn't watch it all since it's to long and too much of the same images (would love to see a 45sek to 1 min version). But if you are in for this type of work, I'm sure it's really fascinating!

Some thoughts.

I have been following the release of C200 and seen many of the uploaded footages. Very very few impress me. Probably since the shooters are largely amateurs, very few cinematographers.

What I find interesting is how C200 renders lines, they are a bit thick (a feeling of DSLR  footage). If you watch some Red Scarlet footage you can easily see that lines appear much cleaner, something many appreciate. These "clear lines" can also be seen in Alexa footage.

In crop_rec mode slow shutter and low frame rate is normal if you want proper framing.

Correct! It’s dependent of aspect ratio..
Otherwise you need crop lines and make the rest in post.

I can't find the option to decrease vertical resolution on the crop rec submenu and  have the most recent build I believe. How do I opt between the two?

Also, I have a doubt that I looked around to find the answer but couldn't because I think it is too basic. Here it goes: does crop rec only work zooming in x5? I initially thought it would capture the whole frame, but then I read it is 5x zoom in liveview and actually capturing the equivalent of x3.
Crop rec is determined by resolution, do you want less vertical you change aspect ratio, for example 2.60:1. Higher vertical 1.78:1 etc..

Settings from first post, starting from Canon and ML defaults.

There's no more 1920x1080 48p in recent builds, guess whyLast time I've checked, all crop_rec modes were centered (maybe off by a few pixels, give or take). Is this no longer true?
Last time i tried there were substantial more than a few pixels when compared center crop to 3K crop rec. But it’s not a complaint only wonder what everyone uses :)

You who uses crop_rec a lot, which option do you use most? I often tend to use center crop. All because of lens characteristics, better performance in the glas etc. But I would have loved higher vertical resolution in this option. Since I only shot 1.85:1 or 1.78:1 and never 2.35:1 there is not so high resolution, since it ebbs out at 1340 or such. But time will tell.

How about you?

When i set to Crop_rec 3k .. my  live view is with latency. With this situation i can not focus any moving objects. I s there any way to get real time liveview  in crop_rec?
Live view only work in crop rec if you shoot 3x 1080 1:1 then you have propper framing and live view. Otherwise (higher resolutions without crop) you use Frozen LV so you at least can frame :) CPU power and memory isn’t enough I guess..

Still having this problem, or is it a problem? It remains locked down when using crop rec. Do anyone know if it affect performance?

how can you frame? i wanna use the 5x crop mode whatever its called but i can't see the framing at higher resolutions. can you see it on a monitor? I don't have one to try?

If you choose Frozen LV or equivalent you get an black and whit low res image you can frame with but hardly focus with.

so are you going to shoot 1080 or crop? what do you prefer?

Shooting wize nothing beats normal 3x3 binary with live view. But if you have the tools to do Crop rec in live situations with actors the resolution really looks great!

Highly unscientific pixel peping test of resolution with Canon 5D mark III and Otus primes. How sharp can a 5D3 be with sharp primes?

Canon 5D3 with 1.1.3 firmware and Magic Lantern Crop_rec module.
Zeiss Otus 55mm in crop rec and in 1080p 3x3 binary.
Zeiss Otus 28mm in crop rec, lastly a flairtest.
Canon CN-E 14mm, lasty a flairtest.
In the end you find a 100% crop comparison.



Interesting that Otus is nearly totally resistant to flairs.

Hope someone find it interesting. And download if you can. Sorry but I forgot to take a closeup of a character...

If some one has a resolution chart with a Alexa or such (not Red) and Master primes or such Zeiss, that would be really interesting to compare to.

If you want high speed and slow motion, shoot 48 if your timeline is 24 or 50 if you use a 25p timeline. Then you can either have slow motion or go for lips sync.. Going 60p is mor challenging to get to lip sync.

Have some direct light (soft or whateverk) etc front light and you’ll get some classic flairs often going well on ML.

Yea I wouldn't use 5d3 if you got a 50K budget , It a Still's camera that does good Video but it's not a production Camera no matter what trick we do to the software to get raw video.
I would rent a C300 markii , C500 or even a 1DC or better yet the new C200 . Even thou the 5D3 can do 4k or very close to it you can't trust it other then short project's ,
it on the bleeding edge where anything can happen e.g. from corrupt frames to early stops , to overheating (FYI Canon "C" series has cooling fans internally)  etc. ....
I know  there are some that had great success in filming short's and some feature length projects but there playing with fire
as any thing could happen and you loose a day's worth or filming , is it worth it ? you be the judge . I would say run the 5D3's as backup's as there are not 100% reliable yet (if ever) .
I use my 5D2 in short news stories & mini Doc. (no more 30min)  and I always have some issue , yes I know you are talking about a 5d3 here and I have a 5D2 but the point is even thou I know
100% that I can record crop mode 2144x1076 24p continuously (10bit) without problem I still have at least 2 other cams recording . 1 for different angle and the other for backup on the same angle of the 5D2 , as I had early stops for no reason (maybe got hot no sure) but I was covered  from the B-cams . What ever you do have a mind set that the 5D3 could always have problems and needs to be monitored by a experienced user at all times to avoid pit falls .

Cureently looking into renting one c300mk2 and have one or two ML for edit possibilities. But I came just from a test pit and I then ran a 5D3 and Otus primes, for power we used socket power (not sure what’s the English term for it) and al whent well. But do any of you know if powering from more reliable power sources will help canon cams work better with ML?

Will update how the decisions go..
