General Help Q&A / Re: Is my 7D Fried?
September 13, 2016, 11:47:44 PM
I was about to try and take a photo of the pattern on the crashed screen... But i cant even get that far now... The camera crashes moments after going into video mode with Err 80 on the top display... The main screen is just black and switched off.

Sadly I dont think its the screws...

Oh and shutter count i think was around 1000, it started making a new folder recently.

Yeah I have tried resetting the settings, even tried pulling the cmos battery...

Tried differnt cards...

I can only take a good guess ML did it as it started happening after extensively using ML...

Yeah ive had a quote back form fixation in london, 120+VAT + parts, how much is a digic processor going for ? 100 200 quid?
So umm 300ish quid I guess to fix my camera :/
Not happy at all. And I hate to say it. I wont test ML again. I love what you guys are trying to do but I cant afford to keep having my camera repaired because of what is most likely a bug somewhere...

So this has been up for a few weeks... and no ones replied?

I had hoped for some input, as i now cant even take photos.

I guess the cpu is cooked from ML use?

Heck f i sent it to Vauxhall canon repair in London could they fix it? and if they can how much would they charge?

Please I really would like some help here...

As for mysteps... I used ML various features, raw and 2.5 d x5 crop...... the works... Lately its uninstalled since it began being unstable and now I guess the damage has been done.

Its not bricked as such, it might boot up without an error 80 sometimes. But then I might get one photo to shoot but the image would be corrupted mostly green... and the camera would then hang.

From here, as for steps... cant really say as I was testing out ML in all sorts of ways for about a month.

I did download it from here though.

Honestly Im really worried. I was testing out magic lantern a couple months ago checking out raw 2k footage stuff... And it was fun. But then things became more unstable. Would crash more often...

Now Ive uninstalled Magic lantern, but it still really unstable in video mode. Can hardly shoot anything without the screen getting garbled up and freezing. I get err 80 and err 70 very regularly...

I even tried reinstalling 203, Im even tempted to try installing firmware 205 to see if that fixes it.

Even stranger is I even saw a buffer meter while in stock 203, has ML altered some flags that it didnt put back after uninstalling?

So yeah, has ML killed my camera? :(

Im not going to blame you guys or anything, this project is great and its clear many many people have a great time without without a hitch, have i just been really unlucky?

Nice editing there. Did you edit in resolve or premier/final cut?
So you colour corrected in resolve, and it looked fine in resolve? And its only after you export to quicktime DNxHD it comes out desaturated and lost contrast?

I agree it looks a little desaturated and occasionally over exposed. (the city fly over felt over exposed to me)

Have you tried exporting in different codecs and containers?

If I could afford to donate money I would... ML is a great project.

I'm on benefits (scum i know) and at the moment struggling to get by.

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 7D

Not to distract from the current trend in the topic, but are there any new 7d builds coming? Hopefully with some bug fixes? 3x crop function? any other new feature?
Unless im mistaken the latest build is still 16th may?

LOL, Really nice work. Great work on the suspense build up.

But i got to admit from the screenshot, and then watching the beginning of the film I was half expecting the Ring ghost type girl to start doing some sort of Brittany spears number, and the kid freak out at the horror of seeing that :p

Really great lighting, grading, editing, camera work... um everything :D

Managed to narrow it down to the mlv_raw module.

Maybe the installation has corrupted... Might redownload and copy on to the cf card.

Didnt want to raise a bug in the bug reporting page as I'm fairly sure its already been seen but i thought i should still say something, just in case.

My 7D is crashing after using raw video. It started happening after i did a fair bit of shooting. But it seems to happen at random and normally fairly soon after starting the camera up. Less than a minute.

At the moment Im assuming its Raw or at the very least one of the associated modules as turning them all off seems to stop the crash. Ill experiment later.

When it crashes the screen shows a random colourful pattern and the camera becomes unresponsive. Turning the camera off by the button doesn't turn it off. I have to remove the battery to get it to reset.

When it starts up Magic lantern says it didnt shut down properly and wont load the modules. And doesn't appear to crash then.

This is the may16th build...

Is this a known issue?

Sounds cool :D I need to spend more time investing in other lenses...

I was going to buy some 'M' Lenses with a eos mount converter (I've actually forgotten the name of the lenses :( ) But they were old manual prime and zoom lenses that were going for really cheap and apparently had great glass for filming with...

As a graphics guy I tend to work from eye, but just so I know whats the formula for working out your 35mm equivalent with a 7d, and in x5 cropped mode?

Even when just shooting photos i never learnt the equation which i probably should do as it would help with things like camera tracking :p

Yeah saw a couple of you tube tutorials on ways to do it... I think I can adapt them to make a better looking mosh :)
#16
Yeah super sharp lenses would be great... Though i must admit with my 10-18 it seems pretty damn god in my tests so far.

Even had a few tests where i wasnt really giving any consideration to lighting. While i had ISO noise the footage had a really good movie quality feel without any real post work. Maybe a little tweaking on the raw image processing but not a lot.

Im going to be making a few visual effects shots for a new demo reel soon. And i'm really looking forwarding to shooting 2-2.5 k :D (most likely 2.2k as i would like to be able to shoot near 20 seconds at a time.)

Not sure if this should be here or post processing, this kinda feels like the right place as its to do with filming in raw, but is a hardware topic rather than something to do with the software...

Admins feel free to move to the correct sub forum if this is the wrong place...

Anyway, When shooting with raw cropped on my 7d your loosing fov, so to compensate I've been using wider angle lenses... i particularly like my sigma 10-18, at 10mm...

But I wanted to know your opinions, and what you do?

Those glitches are fairly simple. mostly just scripted wiggle controls in after effects...

No plugins required for that kind of glitch...

The one glitch effect I would love to know how to do but i think it requires plugins for it, is the mpeg break up and artefact dragging effect.

Simple mpeg breakups are easy to do using mosaics, but artefact dragging is something a little more interesting. Its equally hard to explain :D

Its where the breakup effect appears to drag or pull with the motion from the source footage....

If one happens to know how thats done or know a plugin for it. Please let me know.

UPDATE:
Turns out the effect i described is called Datamosh(ing), Thanks google :D

El Capitan, and the osx gui version isnt working for me.
I get

raw2dng converter GUI for OsX
Beta ver.0.13

/Users/Helen/Desktop/RawTest/M16-2115.MLV File not Supported

Any suggestions?

What are the chances of this being developed for the 7d as well?
its very exciting stuff. but i fear maybe the 7D just wont be fast enough?
#21
Thats fair enough :)
Thanks

Hi ive posted a topic in the raw forums, but its not been approved for a few days now. How long does it normally take?

Also while im at it, Is the reason theres no 2k h264 development because the onboard encoder chip cant handle it?
#23
Hi new to the boards...
The 7D has a max CF speed of 80MBps from what i read, so that really limits how much you can shoot raw 2k on... even with a fast CF card that maxes out the bus speed...

Im not a deep level hardware expert, but what is the port on the underside of the camera?

I know its for extension kits like geo tagging and wifi data linking... But does it has a faster bus for data storage?

Could some one in ML dev team do a crowd fund to design and build a this port to sata/ssd interface? Maybe something built into a grip extension?

Can this port save data faster than 80MBps or is it also limited by the CF data bus speed?

Just my two pennies worth...

It would be great to be able to shoot 2k for longer than a few seconds...

Oh and this might be a silly question... Why not 2k compressed to h264? It is a limit of the hardware compression chip?
