Great name.  Too bad I'm on windows.

This is a big help.  Thank you.

I'm just trying to understand how to use the Auto ETTR module.  I'm only trying to accomplish good exposure and get the wide dynamic range I should get with shooting raw.

I got the numbers from the RAW histogram in Magic Lantern.
Inside there is a Red#, Green#, Blue# and a "White E#"

Thanks for the embed tip.  I've got it now.

Here is my ETTR test:

I probably should have tested without the motion.  It wasn't very smooth, and even warp stabilizer didn't salvage it.

I did 5 shots.  I used the AUTO ETTR settings for shots 1 & 3, the others I did not use the settings suggested ( I used the 2 times half shutter mode).

Can someone help me understand how to read and use the E # and RGB #s.

I did grade these.  I guess I should have left them alone for a more accurate test.  Again, Thanks for your help!

**also, how do you use vimeo video embedding correctly in this forum?

SETTINGS for the 5 shots:

Shot 1:
ISO: 800
Shutter: 48
fstop: 2.8
ETTR= 1.4 R-1 G-4 B-2
Shot2:
ISO: 100
fstop: 2.8
shutter: 48
ETTR=4.1 RGB = _ _ _(all blank)
Shot 3
ISO 800
Shutter: 48
fstop 2.8
ETTR= 1 RGB=264
Shot 4
ISO: 1600
fstop: 5.6
shutter: 48
ETTR=2.0 RGB=121
Shot 5
ISO 100
fstop 1.4
shutter: 48
ETTR= 2.7 RGB= _1_

Quotehow can i make my roundtrip work if i added some effects in premiere?

i.e. clip speed, twixtor,warp stabilizer

I'm hoping others will confirm this, but I assume you:
1. export an XML from premiere
2. import it into Resolve
3. do your color corrections in Resolve
4. export an XML from Resolve
5. import the new XML back into Premiere
6. Render using Adobe Media Encoder

Is this correct?
#6
Same here.  I'm struggling with noise.  Are we not exposing correctly?  I'm trying to use ETTR but, I'm not sure I'm using it correctly.
#7
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by step 5:

Quote5) import XML to Resolve and decide what can be done there / need ACR

How can ACR be used here?

And I don't follow step 6.  either.  Render a lossless file from Premiere to send to resolve?

@sarotaz

wow, what a great resource.  Thanks.  I'm new to Resolve but this is getting me up and running.

Thanks again.
#9
wow!  wish i had a 5D3 and not a 5D2.
#10
Oh wow.  Thank you iaremrsir.

I didn't realize:
QuoteIn post, you can't decode TIF as BMDFilm.

I use the free version of cineform studio.

I think I'll lose the noise reduction, skip the .Tif and use resolve to grade, then use premiere and Denoiser II for NR.
What do you think?

Thanks again.  Very helpful.

My Raw Workflow (5d2)

SOFTWARE USED:
Premiere CS6
Adobe Camera Raw
Black Magic: Davinci Resolve Lite
raw2gpcf
BATCHelor
raw2dng
QuickTime

PRODUCTION:
1.  Copy Raw File to HDD

2.  BATCHELOR
   Rename files Scene1_Location_00001.dng (example)
   Create DNGs
   Create Cineform Proxy

3.  QUICKTIME
   Review cineform
    ACR
   Review a dng frame

4.  EXIFTOOLGUI
add data:  ISO, F#, Shutter, FPS

5.  Backup DNGs to 2nd HDD

6.  Format card & Repeat for next shot

POST PRODUCTION
1.  ACR
DNG - Noise Reduction & Sharpening.
   Export Tif sequence

2.  RESOLVE
   Import Tif sequence
   Color Space = BMD Film
   Highlight Recovery
   Use Hunters Lut
   Color grade
   Export an XML
   Export DNxHD .mov (proxies)

3.  PREMIERE CS6
   Link dngs to .mov proxies
   Edit using proxies
Replace proxies w/ Resolve XML info.

@mageye - http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6963.msg59455#msg59455

Anyone know the work around for using noise reduction in Resolve?
#13
Does Resolve ignore any setting changes you make to a DNG using ACR?  Is the only way to retain those changes in Resolve to import a .Tif version?
#14
Thanks for sharing, I'll start adding the exif info until ML has the time to integrate it.
#15
There are some conflicting opinions here.  Anyone have any comparison videos?
#16
Thanks PeopleMerge!  Interesting video.  I'm new to Resolve so it was very helpful.

One question - when you do a final project render in Resolve does it recognize any effects from Premiere, or titles, what about Magic Bullet's Denoiser?  What if you speed up or slow down footage?

Thanks again!

QuoteU wouldnt bother denoising with acr. Its way too agressive.
Neatvideo does a phenomenal job.
Theres also the chroma denoiser technique in resolve which gives a more traditional grain like look

chroma denoiser is that not available in the lite version?
Would Magic Bullet's Denoiser II work as well as Neatvideo?

I'm working on a windows machine.  I want to use resolve lite.  Apparently QuickTime Prores is not an option when using a windows machine.  I'd like to edit in Premiere cs6.

There is a Quicktime DNxHD 1080 444 option.  It seems to work well.  Would you recommend something over this?
#19
I just tried it out, and I thought I would share my findings.

1.  Be sure to download and install both EXIFTool and EXIFToolGui.
2.  You have to rename EXIFtool-(k).exe to EXIFtool.exe
3.  Select all your dng files
4.  Click "Export/Import (menu bar) -> "copy metadata from single file -> select your photo (with the correct EXIF metadata) -> execute

*I had to manually input FocalLength and FNumber because I was useing a manual lens without any camera communication.

Having all this info. would be nice, I am tying to figure out if it is practical to do all of this during production.  Any ideas?

Why not use NR in ACR?
#21
+1  I want to see it!

Here's me trying to figure out ETTR.  https://vimeo.com/69923344

I processed using:

RAW2CDNG
Resolve - with Hunter's LUT (https://vimeo.com/67970827)
exported as QT 4:4:4
I then played around with the colorgrading (colorista, fast color corrector) I probably would have been better off just to leave it as is though.
then exported h.264
I noticed some heavy aliasing (on the medicine bottles) that vimeo introduced.  (I think I exported with the wrong settings for vimeo).

*Side note, watch out that in 3X crop mode that you shoot in the middle of your frame.  As you can see I was too far left on a few shots.

Anyway, as you can see I'm struggling getting the correct exposure.  I'll try again after your response.  (Thanks by the way).

I'm sorry to ask for more of an explanation after such in depth descriptions, but I'm still left with questions.

With auto ETTR on, it is controlling ISO and shutter, meaning if I try to change either it automatically replaces it where it thinks it should be.  So, is the only adjust to make the % of highlight to ignore?

Is the idea to get the White # inside the histogram to balance out to 0?

When ETTR is on, and the image is still underexposed, I'm assuming it's because I have a blown out window in the frame (for example).  Is this correct?  If so what is the correct procedure to compensate?

I'm currently uploading some video I shot with ETTR to show you where I'm at.  I'll add it as soon as its uploaded.

Thanks for the help.

After using RAW2DNG I imported the files into Adobe Camera RAW
I noticed that down below the images it says  8 bit DNG.  It gave me an option of changing this to 16 bit (but not 14).

I also noticed that it gives you an option to change the size:

1880 x 840 (1.6 MP) (the size I shot the RAW files in.  I was able to get 4 or 5 seconds before dropped frames on my 5d mark ii)
2048 x 915 (1.9 MP)
3072 x 1373 (4.2 MP)

Would this be a good (or the best) way (with minimal loss of quality) to upsize for 1080p or even larger?
It also gives you a chance to change the resolution.  What would be best 72?  300?  Sharpen for Screen I imagine is best.  Thanks for your help and expertise!
