Thanks, Kitor. I know the rules here, having been a member for several years. But of course I'm looking forward to good news. So of course I'm not hijacking research threads, just asking as politely as possible for a link - which as you say, isn't there for the moment. So I just wait, excited and hopeful. Good luck to all of you excellent software detectives.

Dear Coon - where can I get the FA_MechaShutterClose... routine and implement it on my RP? Your solution seems to be nothing less than fabulous - and the open shutter is a problem for those of us who have to change our lenses ever so often.
Thanks for your effort.

Very nice movie - horisontal lines were perfect, and colours are excellent. Good work. Why invest in a 1DC - it may be faster for sports and action, but video, ML etc. really call for a 5D3. As Ken Rockwell still says today: The best all-round camera in the world...

Don't rely on Canon service in Budapest. Obviously they don't know how ML works. I have had ML running on my 700D since 2014 without any problems. Today I use my 5dIII's a little more than the 700, but I could never get the jobs done without ML.

General Chat / Replacing focusing screen on 5DIII
April 27, 2018, 07:44:35 PM
Fast and precise manual focusing is paramount to getting the best results from the manual Samyang lenses (and old but excellent lenses from other suppliers, ie. my belowed Nikkor-S 50mm 1.4.) But with the focusing screens supplied with modern digital cameras fast focusing can be a daunting task, especially if the light conditions are less than ideal. I have replaced the focusing screens in my two 5D mark III's with the EC-B focusing screen originally designed for the 5D mark II. The EC-B has a split-image field in center of the screen - and it works extremely well with lenses better than f3.5-4. The 5DIII is not primarily designed for exchangeability of the focusing screen, but the procedure is really straight forward and very simple.

When I saw the battered and destroyed 5DIII on the 1st of April, I cried. I had to hug my own two darling 5D's and soothe them and tell them, that this beaten fellow was in good hands at the ML Hospital - and now, a few days later I have shown them the repaired, sound and healthy 5DIII. They both clicked happily a few times, let out a deep sigh and blinked with their f16s. My two daughters (keen photographers themselves) have finally declared me totally nuts - but then again they understand why I love 5DIII and ML. They have their photographs to prove it.

O, A1ex, this is absolutely too wonderful to be true - maybe it's something, that only occurs on the 1st of a certain month...?

O, Walter, I'm not smoking anything funny - and I'll have to agree with you, that the number of downloads may not represent the number of users - I myself update my ML every time there is an update. But of course a guesstimate about the number of actual users might be interesting. And I really just want to express my appreciation for the deveolpers - and you. Your dry wit is what I need every once in a while.

What an excellent tool ML is! I find it extremely telling and important, that the latest nightly for the majority of cam brands now has been around for something like 8 weeks. The software is sleek, has a very modets footprint in-cam, and yet provides us with an insane amount of possibilities - and the amount of combinations is staggering. At some point I'd like to know exactly how many copies of each nightly for every camera people have downloaded. I am sure, the numbers will tell a tale of a resounding succes and an extremely important addition to the craft of photography and film making. Along with the brilliant inventors of Leicas, Nikons, Canons, Contax'es, Rolleis et cetera, you fine programmers and engineers really belong in the Photography/Cinematography Hall of Fame. Thank you so much for ML. And a happy Easter...

Beautiful and extremely important. Should be shown everywhere in areas where women live under appalling conditions - Afghanistan, Pakistan, India of course, but also Myanmar - and in Europe, so that more people may understand the plight of women. Thank you for this important contribution - and also thanks to Oasisin for their effort towards a betterment of life for women.

All cameras that are not "born" camcorders pay a special tax in Europe if they are able to record more than 30 mins without interruption. The tax is being faded out, but until it disappears totally, no dslr manufacturer will make his software record beyond 30 mins. So the half hour limit is political.

Walter, I'm sorry that this post came to my attention so late - my photo school and a rather large project ate up a lot of time. But I'm Danish - a neighbor to Germany, and I speak German. I have always enjoyed your dry wit and very precise comments, so I suppose, your command of English is top notch. But if you'd want a helping hand in translation, I'd be proud to give it a try.

General Development / Re: Experiment - Dynamic My Menu
November 07, 2017, 10:38:18 PM
Dynamic My Menu is an extremely good idea. Is it possible to have the Dynamic My Menu pop up as an automatic menu choice when we activate ML? (Like Canon in Creative modes)? Anyway the Dynamic My Menu is a godsend. Thanx A1ex.

Raw Video / Re: Shooting raw monochrome?
November 07, 2017, 10:22:17 PM
Raw is always in color. Even if your raw photo editor transforms the picture according to any chosen picture style, the basic raw file is always in color. Convert in post. If raw could be filtered, it would not be raw any more, would it?

"Ceterum censeo experimental build page esse delendam." Walther you had me howling from laughter. When I get my breath back, I'm going toagree with you. I install every new official build, and it certainly pays off - and when I try out an experimental, I reinstall the official build immediately after testing. I find it exciting like Christmas every time I install a new build - and many times I have been totally awed by the improvements.

At least Martin Schwabe had some success with "Canon EOS 5D Mark III Profifunktionen - Neue Funktionen der EOS 5D Mark III im Detail" which is an excellent book about some of the lesser-understood features
of the 5DIII. When I was a new owner of that wonderful camera, Schwabe was helpful. But with the speed, with which ML evolves, it would be a herculean effort to make a book, that would not be obsolete the day it came out of the press. When I try to compare the ML I learned to use back in '14 and the tool we have today, it has been quite a voyage, quite an achievement and quite a big feast!

A1ex - I commented on this in the crop branch, but allow me to say it again here: What an achievement. From what you guys told me some time ago, the technical challenge was almost overwhelming, but you  masterminded it. Thanks, A1ex and your staff of competent and enthusiastic testers, developers and programmers. You're taking engineering to a new level.

What a Christmas present - thanks A1ex and all you other excellent Canon Magicians. I know that all of you - of course - know exactly how happy we all are with your work. But it can't be said enough: You guys take terrific cameras and turn them into super machines. Our daily work with the cameras benefit tremendously from your work. Many very difficult tasks are a lot easier now, and the overall quality of our work is vastly improved, thanks to you guys. My town, Aarhus in Denmark, is the European Culture Capitol this year, with lots and lots of photogenic events, so ML will certainly prove its worth again and again. Should you happen to be in the vicinity, I'll pop the bubbly.

You might want to look it up. Google Aarhus Denmark - lots of info is in English as well as Danish...

With subs in English you´d gain a very large crowd of fans. I have seen enough of your fils to know that you're very romantic, aesthetic and thrive on beautiful pictures. I love the way you tell your story through the eyes of other people, i.e. girls with cameras. Maybe some time you should use a woman speaker - look at "the Lover" based on the autobiography by the French author Marguerite Duras. That movie is extremely strong, because of the female speaker.
I'm SO looking forward to your next piece of art. What you can do with ML is one of the reasons A1ex and the other magicians keep on expanding and developing it.
Thanks for a very fine piece of storytelling.

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 700D / T5i

@stevedraw - http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5951.msg154413;topicseen#msg154413 might help you. When the weather is right (no wind) the built-in mikes are excellent, and ML monitors audio with two bars in top of the display.
Good luck.

Excellent piece of work - and what a lovely family. A bunch of really nice kids. Fifty years from now your grandkids will love this movie.

@reddeercity -  I think we've got us A WINNER. When DeafEyeJedi approves of something, it's like getting the Blue Ribbon. I'm certainly going to test this one out.

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 5D Mark IV
October 09, 2016, 10:45:01 PM
@wicq: The 5D4 is being investigated - the same as 760D, 80D and 7DII, so a lot of people are working in their spare time testing and reverse engineering the cams. It is tedious work, like collecting stamps. If you really want to understand the job, these magnificent guys are doing, then read the 5D3-story here. Post by post. Victories, failures, retests, corrections... it is a tale of courage, stubbornness, willingness to go far beyond the call of duty - as if there ever was such one. You could base a Pulitzer-prizewinning novel on these pages:

Read "The Machine" by Tracy Kidder. That one also won the Pulitzer Prize. That book will give you some idea of what A1ex and his peers are really doing.

Of course. But in due time it should be available to a larger community. Good luck until then.
