Frank7D, Walter isn't the only helpful person here. I've learned quite a bit from reading other users' posts and they're helpful and cordial. Walter tends to be short and inarticulate; personally I can't say that Walter's posts have been the most helpful for my needs.

I'm not sure if your response here is to defend him and give him a "pass" for his tone on these forums, but I guess you're entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. In the meantime, I'll just shut up and try to find time to create a video showing how I'm able to copy the contents of a working card to another as I described above. I was only looking to contribute to the T3i/600D thread and not have to be told I'm "worse than useless" because Walter doesn't think my method works (did he say that he tried it and it didn't work? I can't tell due to his inarticulateness).

I don't know who has hurt you, Walter, but you could use a bit of a lesson in civility. You're constantly abrasive like a disgruntled employee at a video store. Last I checked, ML employs NO ONE, so you can keep your shitty tone. You may think that because you answer to just about every post here that you're entitled to write the things you do, but no - you're not. Being helpful doesn't entitle you to be a condescending a-hole, no matter what you may think.

I'll create a video showing how I've done it and will post it (it's going to take some time because I've got a ton of things on my plate). I don't know who else has tried this and failed, but to everyone else BUT Walter, my apologies if I've mislead you, I promise you this works for new cards and I'll eventually prove it.

"600D nightly builds doesn't contain FIR." True, but a working ML card running the nightly does.

[Installing to additional SD cards]

600D user here running ML with April 19 nightly. Solid - zero crashes. Not interested in installing another version unless there's a critical upgrade to ML functionality.

Installing to additional SD cards for me worked well this way:

1. Remove working ML card from camera, mount on laptop, copy all contents from it to a folder on my laptop (named "ML April 19 Nightly").
2. New card - format in Camera, then mount card on laptop (no format)
3. Copy contents from "ML April 19 Nightly" folder to SD card.
4. Remove card from laptop, load it on camera. Run "update firmware" on Camera.

I've installed ML on 3 other 32gb cards and they all run smoooooth.

You didn't say if you waited a few seconds or not before removing the card from the camera, but that is crucial. Removing the card from the camera before it's done doing whatever it is ML does when you open the door can lead to corrupt files/cards.

And If you were to say: HDR vs RAW vs Dual ISO, it would be:

Apples vs Oranges vs Jet Fighter

Think of ML's Dual ISO feature as a step-up from HDR processing. If you have an interest in that (which involves post processing your images) then I'd definitely recommend it. If you're more interested in getting an optimal ISO for every shot, then what you're already doing should be enough.

In answer to your question: "dual-iso functions with auto-iso and if so, how?" Yes (in a way). It can work together with ML's A-ETTR (analyses your image and decides shutter speed and ISO, decides if you need Dual ISO or not as long as you have that feature enabled). Suggested reading:

Will do for the next shoot, I deleted the "bad" .CR2s out of frustration before checking this thread again.

Two of the images were darker (Flash didn't fire) so it's possible your guess is correct for those, however the other six that couldn't be processed were "safety" shots with the same settings/scenes as the previous shots that were able to be processed with Cr2hdr -- and some of them were the better shot! 

I think I might have some corrupted .CR2s. 

Doing exactly everything above, what I get is an MS-DOS window that opens the file copied to BIN but only goes as far as displaying image dimensions before shutting down. I happened to be able to get a screen grab of the window before it closes, which displays the message "Doesn't look like interlaced ISO" for a split second before it shuts down:

I've also tried the Beta3 LR plug-in and I get an error saying the file isn't Dual ISO.

I have 8 out of 50 shots with this issue from the same shooting session, are these just corrupted files then?

I too noticed the battery draining quicker on my 600D.

Significantly reduced battery life (aka: Much higher power consumption) compared to "native" Canon firmware is one of those things frequently posted. But not a single poster was able and/or willing to deliver anything substantial (reproducable for others) if asked to deliver hard data.
If you come up with more details it may be worth a second look.

How would one be able to provide "hard data" on this? Is there a utility I can run on the camera?

I just figured it's because ML is running a lot of processes that the original camera's firmware wasn't, and compensated by pulling out my wallet and ordering a Vivitar camera grip with 2x batteries.

There's also a recommended firmware from Canon that needs to be installed as well. Make sure that's the correct one before installing ML

The 3.5mm jack on the 600D is balanced (T/R/S) and the pinout is as you mentioned. My only concern would be if your mic requires phantom power (if so, you're going to need a preamp between it and the camera).

Great video! The angles and motion was great. I've got the same camera and found it inspiring as I haven't done anything serious yet.

Thanks. The feature is called "Alternate Frames Only" (for other n00bs like myself who might be reading).

It means essentially that "Dual ISO" will work in alternating frames (and it also means you have to snap the picture twice). Not quite what I was looking for, but I can see how this could be a useful feature for certain situations.

Cool, how!? I checked the User Guide and couldn't find it (besides turning off Dual ISO and then taking another shot).

I'm one of those "teach them to fish" people too, so while I appreciate the brief "yes" response, prompting me to find out how on my own (also searched the Dual ISO thread) I just couldn't find out how to set ML to take one RAW shot, followed by a Dual ISO (like a "RAW+Dual ISO" command). I've done some searching over the last couple of days and just can't find this feature.

Those are great examples of when to stick with RAW and when to use Dual ISO! Thanks for posting these up, chmee.

Okay, Iooks like the concern would be with action shots. I rarely shoot action shots or shots that I'd be worried about having ghosting show up, so it looks like for me, I'll continue exploring dual ISO in post processing. I've shot a few scenes and portraits and have already seen less noise than some similar RAW shots in post (I've been shooting RAW for a while now).

I have noticed some interesting differences when zooming in during post. With RAW, a lot of the nosie looks like grains, whereas the dual ISO images tend to have what look like hairs. I don't know if this is some sort of result due tothe interpolation of both "layers" but it looks like this helps the images look more natural in post. Good stuff, thankful for this added "feature" in my DSLR.

Here's a question for those of you who have properly set up your cameras with ML and are now able to shoot/process Dual ISO shots: Do you still shoot in (one ISO) RAW? If so, for what reasons/situations?

No, I'm not a working pro from the City of Angels, just a local guy who shoots pics as a hobby.

I bought my T3i about three years ago and over the last three years, have been teaching myself how to use the camera to its fullest potential. I'm good at guessing how to set up the "triangle" for maximum light/minimal noise, and have known about Magic Lantern for a little over a year now. I finally installed it now that I feel comfortable enough with the camera to learn how to use the features that ML brings to the 600D.

I have to admit, I kind of was hoping that installing ML would break my camera, so I could buy another one, like the 70D I plan to upgrade to at one point, but nope, installation was a breeze and it all went smoothly!

Yesterday, I installed ML 2.3 on my T3i and am still trying to get my bearings with it. Two questions, please:

1. I thought about sticking with 2.3 to learn how to use it and get familiar with it (I mostly shoot pics and knowing myself, this can take me months) but when I learned about Dual ISO, that got me interested and wanted to know: Does the most recent nighly extend this capability to the 600D? I know some features work on some cameras and some don't. If a fellow 600D user would chime in, I'd appreciate it.

2. I noticed in the thread announcing Dual ISO that it says to use it by choosing an ISO in the Canon menu, and another in the ML menu; does this mean that right now (with 2.3) if I select ISO 163 in ML, but switch over to the Canon menu, which says 200, will the shot be at 200 ISO (because I switched over from the ML menu?)

3. I use LR4 and don't think I can merge HDR files in it, what software would you guys recommend for this? I have a really old version of Photoshop (6) and at this time, I can't spend too much money on hobby software, is there anything freeware out there that I can download?

Try recording a clip, you'll see the audio meters working. I joined the forum to ask the same question for my T3i and while I was waiting for the verification email, I discovered that the meters started working as soon as I hit the record button (they are inactive when the camera is not recording anything).

EDIT: Since I posted this, I upgraded 2.3 to the latest nightly and the meters are working perfectly. You just need to select the appropriate input (internal if you're using just the cam's mic). There are various options for gain as well, solid work!
