Quick question. I know it is possible to shoot 4:3 in RAW mode but can you also shoot in this aspect ratio at h.264?

Here's an update on the clip I posted yesterday. It's good to get  to the bottom of this.

NEW CLIP: https://vimeo.com/97970989

ACR is absolutely the problem. I performed a simple correction in Davinci and get none of the same problems. I was a little shocked at how drastic the ACR settings actually are. To my eyes the output from Davinci is much milder even when trying to do a stress test. Overall I would still obviously like to have After effects as an option for post production but after this side-by-side I doubt I will touch it for RAW video again.

Although I am using after effects :)

Hi all,

there is no pattern on the window frame so yes a bit puzzling. Here are a couple of frames in my dropbox.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/jbhgi3euj0drfhb/M11-1956_00000.dng
https://www.dropbox.com/s/m7q647pbvfiwawk/M11-1956_00021.dng
https://www.dropbox.com/s/qmgeq1aqdoj4t2m/M11-1956_00054.dng

I'm also going to upload a similar davinci grade later today to compare with ACR.

Hi stevefal,

Yes that is interesting. This particular window frame has an incredibly straight edge and seems to invite aliasing and therefore flickering after post processing in ACR. Of course these effects are very much less if you minimise the reliance on post-correction as monsanto points out.

I suppose my main curiosity is why this kind of artifact is so intense. As I stress the image I start to see the horizontal lines emerge to give off a similar effect to what you might find on dual iso images or on de-interlaced footage.

Just my two cents.

Its okay, I'm perfectly aware of how to expose correctly ;) This is an exercise to deliberately see how far the dng's can be pushed in post. I find the best way to get a good understanding of possibilities of the whole workflow and find interesting optical effects are to conduct stress tests like this.

Noise and banding I expected to see however I just was a bit taken aback by how bad the aliasing became. Even at 50 its quite noticeable in this particular circumstance.

Thanks for your response.

Hi All,

I've been having a read and this is a great thread, its nice to see so many camera enthusiasts working together.

I have been doing some tests of my own of the 14bit RAW on the 5d3 and have come across an issue that puzzles me a little.
I started by shooting some basic videos around the office and wanted to see how much I could pull back in terms of highlight and shadow detail
and of course it is very impressive. However when filming the window I noticed that the more I claw back in the adobe raw after effects tools the more aliasing and flicker is introduced into the image. Of course being that this is the 5d3 I know i don't get this kind of aliasing when recording h.264.

Here is an example of what I'm looking at, specifically the crossbar on the window. https://vimeo.com/97970989
This video was recorded at 1600x1200 (I meant to record in 4:3 but I get the same effects in 16:9)
Also in after effects the highlights are at -100 and shadows at +100

Has anybody else experienced this or is this unusual?

Sorry still nothing. Just the dependencies error.  :-\

I have highlighted the inserted script. Is this how the code should look?

#9
Hmm that hasn't worked. Still getting the error in LR
#10
Cool dragged and dropped and yes that works in terminal! Here is the screenshot. https://www.dropbox.com/s/1cvpofxyl5glkyy/Screen%20Shot%202014-05-10%20at%2009.33.18.png

How can we get LR to recognise dcraw and exiftool? I tried adding your code to MLProcess.lua but not much luck there i'm afraid.
#11
Hmm okay so I can't seem to get the terminal command to do anything. I tried inputting it a couple and this is what I get:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4he449gg2t5715g/terminal1.png

Now I assuming I did this part wrong I decided to try your code in MLProcess.lua anyway. I placed it in here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/qrcxnzcgykz1821/MLscript.png

I'm still getting the dependencies error in lightroom. What i'm thinking of doing is completely reinstalling the plugin and seeing what happens.
I hope the images are useful. If you see what I'm doing wrong please let me know :)

Yes both the computer and LR have been restarted. Here are a couple of images.

The terminal when dcraw is typed

The terminal when exiftool is typed

The current files in the plugin bin

The alert inside lightroom

I really appreciate the help, apologies if this is all just a bit basic. I'm happy to supply any screenshots you need.
#13
Ah. Right so using that command confirms they are both present somewhere but not sure where. Could the path be the problem?

'which dcraw exiftool'

/opt/local/bin/dcraw
/usr/bin/exiftool

#14
Already seem to have exiftool 9.59 installed. I grabbed it from here http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/index.html

Is that right?
#15
Thanks for the reply. I have installed Mac Port, xcode and installed dcraw via terminal but the lightroom plugin says...

~ Dependencies error ~ This plugin (cr2hdr) need dcraw and exiftool.
Please install it before run this plugin

I'm very puzzled. Now if I type into terminal 'sudo port install dcraw'. then my password It returns...

--->  Computing dependencies for dcraw
--->  Cleaning dcraw
--->  Scanning binaries for linking errors: 100.0%
--->  No broken files found.

#16
Ah thanks for the link to dcraw9.21.

My mac is currently running dcraw v9.19 how do you update it to the new version?

So far I have tried the obvious 'sudo port install dcraw' but terminal returns 'sudo: port: command not found'

I'm sure its simple to you guys. Any suggestions?
#17
Ah pardon me I'm running the plugin for mac.
#18
I didn't think that worked... I mean when I use the plugin it works with or without the windows cr2hdr.exe, dcraw.exe and exiftool.exe.
So from what I gather the only essential file to run the plugin is the unix executable file.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I see no difference whether the windows .exe files are part of the file structure.
#19
Amazed to hear that there's a 20bit plugin working in lightroom. What files do I need to place in the plugin's 'bin' file? Is there a unix executable for it?
#20
haha nice. If only that were an option. Prefer not to shoot video in 'tallscreen'

Just processed a bunch of images and there is some improvement over the original mac GUI that I have been using (as you would expect).

But I do seem miles away from the kind of smooth edges that A1ex had demonstrated in the dng of the batman figure. http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7139.1925

Here are two sections from a frame i have been testing cr2hdr on. the first was done using the original mac GUI which was released on 02/12/2013 and the second I processed today with what I was sure was the latest build. But now looking at them I am questioning that I have this right.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/2gt40u0k80nx459/crop1.jpg
https://www.dropbox.com/s/80py07v30n2qid4/crop%20new.jpg

I'm certain i'm making an error here because there is barely any difference regarding the aliasing in particular (which to me is the first hurdle to getting usable dual iso video).
The batman image was taken using the same iso spacing and from what I can tell had more edge aliasing to contend with.

How can I get better results? Which build should I be using to re-create the results that have been demonstrated so far.

Hi All,

Thank you all for the feedback 10 points! RTLdan your step-by-step was well appreciated.

The images I get out of the 20 bit version are much better. Just waiting on an after effects output then we'll see how the aliasing stands up to scrutiny when played back.

Can't thank you enough I'm glad I got involved in the forums.

Hi All,

Sorry if this isn't the best place to post this but i'm trying to test out one of your recent cr2hdr-20 bit updates but am having a bit of a battle with the dcraw and exiftool.

What happens when I drop a CR2 or DNG onto the cr2hdr executable is the command prompt flashes open then closes immediately. However I caught it open in this screen shot so perhaps it will give some clue as to the problem. Again i'm sure this is basic but you could just save my bacon if you can help me get this working.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. That seems like a very sensible way to work, otherwise you'd be fighting an uphill battle.
Also i'm quite relieved that it is the stable build and my eyes haven't packed in yet ;)

Thank you that's very generous, something that incorporates some of the current breakthroughs would be very beneficial to filmmakers. We'll certainly start seeing a lot more video clips that sell the great work you guys are doing.

Do cloning and pull requesting happen on bitbucket? I'm very new so pardon my ignorance but if you have a link then i'll follow it and do some learning

Hi All,

I've just tried out the lightroom plugin for mac, it's got some serious speed compared to the old GUI. I'm wondering whether it is running the latest 20 bit version of cr2hdr.

The reason I ask is because compared to the v2 GUI which was released on 2013-12-02 there have been some staggering images posted up by A1ex regarding improvements in aliasing and moire. this post in particular caught my eye http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7139.1925.

I have conducted a test of my own using an old mac version of cr2hdr and your latest lightroom plugin. Both images seem pretty much identical as far as aliasing and overall usability in the real world is concerned.

Here are both images with a 400% crop on the most offending areas.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/2gt40u0k80nx459/crop1.jpg
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1ffm3oakgrfwwbv/crop2.jpg

So just a bit of clarification really on whether the lightroom plugin is running the latest version of cr2hdr and if it isn't is there a way to update the plugin? Just in case you think this has been covered I have been keeping a close eye on these forums for the past few months and it was A1ex's quite remarkable images that prompted me to engage. But so far I have not managed to find a way to re-create his results on my video stills.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
