Raw Video / Re: Huge Problem with 50D aperture
May 28, 2015, 01:10:32 AM
Yes. just re-checked

Edit:
I just deleted the bootflag and inserted a cf card without magic lantern installed. If I now press the rec button the movie recording starts. Guess this shouldnt be. I think there is some software error.

Edith 2:
Now i did a hard reset (remove main and second battery) and reinstalled the original canon firmware. So NO ML installed, fresh canon firmware and factory defaults --> I can still shoot movies :D ... weird

Raw Video / Huge Problem with 50D aperture
May 27, 2015, 10:06:07 PM
Hey Guys,

Today i made some raw videos with my 50D. The Problem is:

It always films with open aperture ! No matter what aperture I choose (16 f.e) the depth of field is always the same :( . The aperture ring simply doesnt close. The only thing that happens is the image getting darker. Usually if you hit the shot button to shoot a photo the aperture ring closes. Shouldn't this also be the case in Live View or at least when I hit the record button ?

I hope you guys can give me answers here. I really feel like selling my 50D now.

Thanks in advance !

Raw Video / Re: Which camera to buy?
March 01, 2015, 10:27:17 PM
I would go for the 650/700D or the 50D.

I own both and they have their pros and cons.

50D :

+ Cheapest with CF Card Slot (With the komputerbay 1000x i get 83.5 mb/s write speed)
+ No further Crop in 1x mode. (on the 700d you loose some mm of your focal length)
+ great build quality
+ full 1080p in crop mode (I can record about 1 minute with 25fps)

- you only get a used one (might be a minus for some)
- cf cards are expensive ! But the komputerbays are worth it... about 70 Euro for a 64 GB one.
- no touch/flipscreen (you really need one for some shots ! otherwise you need an external monitor)
- no STM technology (not really a drawback imo)

650D / 700D :

+ flip/touch screen
+ STM
+ weight
+ Can do Videos without ML (Even though the Quality is not too great, it might be enough for you some shots ?)
+ Battery lasts longer while shooting raw (only my personal experience)

- Dots on footage (You need an extra work step to solve this in your editing)
- Card is limited to 40 MB/s write speed ! ( To make this clear: You can only shoot lower resolutions continuously. I haven't shot with my 700D for a while but i remember the highest resolution is a bit higher than 1280/720. This also means your focal length gets cropped even further ! Simply said you can only shoot a "smaller" picture. This is what i dislike most about the 700D. If you only shoot shorter clips - like 20 seconds f.e - you can go higher with the resolution and the problem with the focal length decreases.

Btw, this also disqualifies the 60D and all the non CF Card Canons, I don't know why someone should buy them for raw shooting and i would not have bought the 700D if I knew about raw before. If it is not only about raw shooting and other factors are important, well ok. But Raw = CF :)

___

Overall the 700D would probably be the better video camera, if it´s writing speed would not be that limited. this limitation of the 700D makes the 50D superior in my opinion.

Best,
TML

Raw Video / 50D Crop Mode ONLY Grayscale ?
February 26, 2015, 02:52:57 AM
Hey guys,

Im really sorry if this information can be found somewhere, but I already searched for about 2 hours now.

The Problem :

When I hit the record button in Crop mode  on my 50D, the screen immediatly turns grey while recording.
I guess this is the "grayscale" preview setting.
But even after choosing the "Canon" setting in the preview menu(menu --> raw video -->  preview --> Canon) Nothing changed.

I also own a 700D. When i choose "canon" as preview mode, I simply can record with the regular 5x Zoom liveview picture and not a gray one.

Best,
tml

you have to download the latest nightly build and then enable the raw record module in your ML menu on the camera. Its one of the last tabs and called "modules"

Hey,

one way to get a wider range would be choosing a higher resolution BUT crop the buttom and top of your image by choosing less than 16:9. So if you dont mind having black bars at the buttom and top this is the way to go. If you shoot music videos for example this is no problem as black bars are very common anyways.

Another way is to choose 720p 50 fps mode in canon menu. Than you choose fps overwrite at 23,976.  you can now record at a higher resolution (as the image hight is limitated and not correctly stretched) BUT you have to stretch the picture afterwards in premiere etc. which will result in a loss in quality.

Raw Video / Raw Canon Camera Settings 720/1080 Question
November 23, 2014, 01:55:39 PM
Hey guys,

i allways had the the original canon settings set to 1920/1080p 30fps when shooting raw.

My Problem was:

I can only choose 1280x720 to record coninously as a result of the neede writing speed. (using a 700d)
In liveview and on my computer , I allways get a cropped picture. I can never use the full range of my lenses. ( black space on the top, buttom and sides)

But now i figured out, that when i choose 720p in canon menu i can choose higher resolutions (1728x516 continuously) and finally get a non cut video out of it  !

This seems to be the case , as the writing speed needed is much lower when set to 720p in canon menu in comparison to 1080p.

So my question is.

How can the canon settings for resolution have an influence on the raw recording as the resolution is set right in the ML menu. And do i loose quality if the canon menu is set to 720p in comparison to my "cropped" video if set to 1080?

Thanks  :)

Raw Video / Re: 700D / T5i RAW video

Hey !

I will post here what i wrote to jaelill in a PM. This worked for me and for him :

Hey!

there is a thread about raw with the 650D. It has about 20 pages so I will try to summarize what helps to get continious video.

1. Right card : I have a sandisk extreme 45 mb/s. This is the minimum you need I guess

2. Format the Card to EXFAT !!! This is important. Format as Exfat with 128 Kilobits

3. Raw Photo : In CANON Menu you can choose the picture quality. Choose RAW

4. Disable GLobal draw in ML Menu.

5. Shoot !

Hope this helps but if you got the right card and format it proberly this will work 100 %

I will give both a try ! Thank you :)

For now I will use 1728 x 692 to not get my left and right borders cropped if I really need the full angle.

Only thing is I can only shoot 20 seconds but thats a good start !

Thanks Walter for your fast reply !

I would love to but I am on a 700d and this is the highest resolution I get.

Im just thinking about getting a 8mm Fisheye now. The distortion should not be to extreme anymore as the corners are already cut. But if this doesnt work well, I guess thats killing the raw feature for me or better said my limited camera.

Raw Video / Crop factor at 1280/720 RAW
October 28, 2014, 10:25:16 PM
Hey guys,

im just wondering if anyone knows how much the picture gets "smaller/cropped" when recorded in 720p 16/9 RAW compared to the normal focal lenght. I really need a ultra wide angel and it seems like its impossible for me to get a wide angel in combination with raw video.

thanks ! :)
#12
sry guys for posting in this thread again but it seems like the 700d raw thread is kind of dead.

im wondering if anyone of you  can shoot in 24p 1280/720 raw continuously on the 700d/t5i ?

In this thread it says the t5i is able to do so !

But my recording stops after exactly 2:18. I am using a sundisk extreme with 45mb/s.

Will an upgrade to the extreme pro verison with 95 mb/s solve this problem ?

thanks in advance and thanks again for the great work you guys do ! I was about to sell my 700d to get a lumix g6 but the raw feature totally changed my mind.

EDIT : Problem solved. I read the whole 650d thread now and found out that even my 45 mb/s card is able to do continuous recording. the trick is formating the card to ex fat and also disable everything else in magic lantern menu :)

ML is simply amazing !

Oh!, Heck Yeah!, def upgrade, 1.1.3 is working just fine even better and has audio meters turned on in the nightly now, def just as stable as 1.1.1 And the 1.1.3 is more up to date than 1.1.1 actually, 1.1.1 is obsolete now.  ;D

Just for beeing able to format the card in cam without removing magic lantern it is worth it  8)

Just put card in PC, load EOScard and uncheck all the options and then Save it, this just makes card not bootable, nothing to do with camera.

Then put card in cam and format it as low level. This will clear card like new so you get a fresh start.

Then if you have firmware 1.1.1 on your camera, I mean the CANON firmware, then go to Canon.com and get the 1.1.3 Firmware update and update your camera to it.

Now you are ready for ML.

Just copy all the files from the nightly for 700D.113 zip files to the sdcard, put card in camera and do another firmware update, this will setup your bootflag for 1.1.3 ML to work, very simple and restart camera when it says, then ML will load.

perfect, thank you.

Yes, start fresh, use EOScard to remove bootflag from card first, the format card on camera, then copy ML folder, Autoexec.bin and 700D.111.FIR file from nightly zip file to your card and simply goto Firmware update in Canon menu and update with the ML 700D.111.FIR file.

You wont need EOScard anymore to mess with bootflag, just re-update with ML firmware and do what it says to disable bootflag if you choose too.

But of coarse if you are still on Canon 111 firmware, upgrade to Canon 113 first.

700D 113 is working just as good as it was with 111 now, actually better because format now works.

Ok im not sure if i got you right.

-I should remove bootflag from my 700D 111 with eoscard
(how do i do that btw ?... i allways heard here in forum that you cannot remove bootflag if it is installed with eoscard method)

- then upgrade to canon 113 and then put the new ML version on it ?

just to make this clear, you don't need the EOScard tool anymore for the 113 version ?
so you simply install ML like on the 600D ? This should also mean you can disable the bootflag now, right ?

If so, is it worth updating my 700D to 113 now ?

Formatting on a computer is really just deleting files/folders from the card individually, while formatting in the camera is wiping everything and resetting the DCIM/MISC folders and stuff like that. Formatting on the camera is the safest way to make sure the filing system is configured right for the camera to save photos/videos properly.

I would say that the best way to do it is to manually remove ML from the card on a computer, and then reformat it in camera as usual.

I would recommend against this. I've always avoided deleting files individually, because over time it can screw with the negative space on the card and cause problems with the card's filing system. The best way to do it is to let the camera handle it and wipe/reset everything at the same time. Deleting every single video individually is completely different from reformatting, and could certainly cause problems.

Why removing magic lantern on the computer ?
Simply press Q (delete ML) when formatting the card on cam and everything is fine, isnt it ?

how do you guys handle the formatting issue ?

Is formatting the card on computer as good as on camera ? So far I allways formatted the card on camera, delted magic lantern and put it back on afterwards.
Or if i delete every single video on camera, is it as good as formatting ? :D

by the way i had a video shot yesterday and filmed everything with 3.0 x bitrate.. when I had about 11 GB of my 32 GB card full I could not record anymore.
Every take stoped ( video got automaticelly stoped error screen ). After formatting the card I could film everything with 3.0 x bitrate again untill I reached that 11 GB again .

I used 3x bitrate and I couldnt record anymore at 1/3 used memory. Is this normal ? seems like some buffer is fully used or something like that.

Ah, yes, I can see how that would mess someone up, its ok, I am just helping the 650d users out that want meters and this is the easiest place for me to share them, glad it is working now though.

its working great. tried everything so far and everything works great. the only thing is, that I can not find a way to disable the on screen audio meters.
Also I am wondering why the info at the buttom of the screen in Livemode (shutter, iso etc.) are not in colour anymore. It was usefull for beginner. (green,good/red,bad)

Didnt you say you had a 700D, or do you have both and maybe you are saying the 650d camera is not working with the version you downloaded??

If you only have a 700D, t5i then you should be using the 700D version not the 650d, the 650d is for the t4i.

Let me know how it goes.

ups my bad !

QuoteYes, those were the reading I got before adding the Define for 700D copying from 650D in fps_engio

Thats why i downloaded the 650 one for my 700D.
I thought the whole download folder is for 700D (the folders name is t5i) and as you said you adopted something from the 650D version to make it work i thought this would be the latest ML Version for 700D.

I hope you know what I mean  :D

Using ML_700D_Meters_Feb_26_2014.zip everything works fine on my 700D

Again, great job !

As for shutter in PAL
25P
1/50 canon = 1/50, 180degree ml

24p
1/47 Canon = 1/47, 184degree ml

50p
1/100 Canon = 1/100, 180 degree ml

NTSC
30p
1/30 Canon = 1/30, 360 degree ml

24p
1/50 Canon = 1/47, 184 degree ml

60p
1/60 Canon = 1/60, 360 degree ml

Great news ! you sir, are my hero for the day ! :)
Thanks a lot for this. as you might saw in my previous post I was kind of desperate!

Thank you a1ex, thank you mk11174

EDIT : after copying the new 650 meters version on my camera, it wont turn on anymore... the red light is blinking the whole time and nothing else happens.

I am using this one : ML_650D_Meters_Feb_26_2014.zip

other cards without magic lantern work.

Can nobody help me with my shutter problem ?   :(
I just downloaded older alpha builds but still the same problem.
Using 50 fps magic lantern tells me, the 180 degree angle is at 1/88 shutter speed  >:( whereas 1/96 is 162 degree .

How is it possible that I´m the only one having this problem. I did not change anything in my settings. I even reseted the canon settings to default.

Is it possible that my camera is broken ? its pretty new, though.

I uploaded a video of my problem on youtube [ USING 1080 25 FPS ] :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b12vf9Cyf0o&feature=youtu.be
