Hey guys,
I'm having some troubles with the ML UI flickering over the Canon's UI and sometimes freezing the camera..anything I can do to prevent that from happening?

Thanks

Hmmh.. I don't think I've had those problems before. What version are you running? I'm running the old 1.1.1 from feb 09, and it seems very good.
I was thinking about installing a new 1.1.3 version, but once I do that I can't go back ^^ so any other flaws I should know about before installing it? ;\

I'm totally no expert, just so u know :o
Would like to learn something ^^ gl

Lol.. I can see your mask on the background.. doing it the right way is not that simple mate
Grading raw is way different than grading a very VERY flat 4:2:2 (what Dave was doing)

Nice work making a guide though, I'm curious about the result ^^

please take acount into the timecode of "broken" frames. are they regular in distance or on a certain timecode/frame?

Hey, was going to test this converter.. but I can't seem to import .raw files :(
The beta3 and beta2 open fine, but when i drag drop a .raw file it gives this thing :(
#5
How? ;o and how long did that take you? damn

edit: hmmhm according to the shadows not too long xD

Yeah it really does , although i'm too far away from America anyway (Iran)
brands like Transcend , Patriot and Kingston Are still options here but the Komputerbay i never heard it before ML in here.

Seems like i gotta say goodbye to a lens for a fat speedy memory card.
But Also wanted to ask what are the thoughts on lower Resolutions?
Like does 720p needs the half speed and half space of a 1080p file?

I'm doing 1344 x 562 24p on SD cards which write 30 MB/s, so yea that's a possibility that will result in something like this:

1344 x 562 are less pixels than 1280 x 720, full 720 24p will take about 38 MB/s, while full 1080 24p will take over 80 MB/s

In my opinion, raw at 1344 x 562 looks way better than regular H.264 on 1080.. Even tiny details are much more visible with raw. Plus you get more colors, higher dynamic range and more post 'wiggle room' ;) But if you can get full sized raw, then go for it :)

Hope this helped ^^

Ahh, sucks mate. What country if I may ask? The 7D is just expensive compared to some other options, but yea it's very nice.
Haha :p for 1920 x 1080 raw 24p, you will need about 90 MB/s write speed.. I however have no experience with this.

More about this can be found here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6712.0;viewresults or http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5391.0

If you do want to be recording fullhd raw, you won't be able to use 8GB cards.. because those won't even hold 2 minutes of 1920 x 1080 24p raw. Yep it's that big :p

For photos.. as I said, the capacity will probably not be that much of a problem, and you will also not need the extreme write speeds.
If you want a recommendation.. In your case, I would go with one of the "Sandisk Extreme Pro" cards (64GB maybe). They will get you high enough write speeds, and about 12 minutes of raw 1920x1080 24p. If you can't spend that, just go with the extreme cheap ones until you can spend it ;\

Speaking of raw2dng_cs2x2.exe do you know of any good links where I can find the latest? I keep coming across links that don't work anymore or spam. Your help is most appreciated.

Thanks
A follow up,
I did find a version of raw2dng but it didn't get rid of the pinkdots, any specific settings I'm missing? Here's the a frame of the footage
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9Z_7TJrTlxs/U11f-o7e3nI/AAAAAAAADAI/uSE2lHJ4C00/s1600/pinkdots.jpg

Nice frame ^^

Someone in the chat linked me one, back when I was installing ML. It might even be an older version? ;\ I tried to find a list of them, but wasn't really able to find a good list :(
I found a lot of downloads to different ones linked on this thread http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6658.350

I noticed there are different ones. The one I have is just called raw2dng_cs2x2.exe
Will look into this later

Do you have a DNG sample? Upload one from both plain raw2dng and the cs2x2 one.

Sure thing, here is a dropbox link with both dng files and jpeg samples
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/53zqqoccz4jetfr/iUGVj8GvBO

I know.. lame frame :p but the white dots were very well visible on this one ^^

I should mention, that I noticed now I've looked further into this. The white dots are hardly, if not at all visible when the dng is not edited. However, when you bring the highlights, whites or exposure down.. you will start to see them.

Here are some image samples:

This is how both images look, straight from raw2dng and an edited one - pink dots

Edited one - becomes horrible ;\

Here is how both the raw2dng_cs2x2 versions look (pink dots removed) - very nice

Edited one - pitty :(

Hopes this helps ^^
Keep up the good work,

Ramon

Any specific settings when formatting the card in the reader? NTFS or FAT32...?

Quote from: jlahham on April 27, 2014, 01:08:56 AM
Another question .. Is the pinkdots problem a nightly release problem only? or would it persist in the stable release?

I'm thinking thats a problem with this type of camera? ;\ not sure.
When using the raw2dng_cs2x2.exe.. which removes the pink dots, the dots are still visible in bright white areas.. as the dots become pure white
I have to say that it works ok for now, I can't spot them at all on my usual shots.. the process isn't a hassle at all, because you have to do the raw2dng thing anyway ^^

About the cards thing, I would like to have some more info as well.. I'm running my cards on ExFAT now, with the default allocation size (don't really know what that means). I use ExFAT because now I'm able to record a full 32GB SD card of raw footage in one take. I'm wondering if the format settings or allocation size will make a difference in write speeds ;o

Raw Video / Re: 64megs = how much Raw Video ?
April 26, 2014, 11:41:46 AM
It's not completely accurate, but around 1.7 Bytes are used per pixel, per frame.
So if you would have recorded 1920 x 1080 at 24 fps, you would have 1920*1080= 2 073 600 pixels in a frame. That means a file size of about 2 073 600*1.7= 3 525 120 bytes per frame, which is around 3.5 Mega Bytes (MB). (more like 3.4.. but I'll leave it to 3.5)

So your file size per second will be 3.5*24≈ 84.6 MB
When you calculate this the other way around, for example.. how many seconds will fit into 1 GB? It will be around 1000/84.6≈ 11.8 seconds per GB.

So a 64GB card.. which results in something like 59 GB of usable space, will store about 59*11.8≈ 696 seconds.. Which is about 726/60≈ 11-12 minutes of 1920 x 1080 24p raw

This way you can calculate it for any resolution and frame rate ^^
For example 1344 x 562 in 24 fps will be:

1 000 000 000 / (1344 * 562 * 1.7 * 24)≈ 32.4 seconds per GB
(1GB in Bytes)--(width)-(hight)-(1.7)-(fps)

So a 64 GB card will hold about 59  *  32.4/60≈ 32 minutes of 1344 x 562 24p raw

As you can see, file size will depend a lot on your resolution. But if your card can't even write as fast as 90 MB/s.. you won't be able to record at 1920 x 1080 24p at all.. not to mention a stable continuous recording ^^

Hope this helped in some way, haha

If only used for pictures, low capacity is usually not that much of a problem. 8GB will still get you around 400 raw pictures. Those will start at around $ 15.
If you're taking video, especially raw video, where write speeds as well as capacity matter a lot more.. I would save up for something better :p in that case, you will be looking at around $ 50 minimum
Why silicon power and sandisk only btw?

If you want to go really cheap, this seems to be your best option
Komputerbay 16GB CF 300X
However, this seems a way better option in the longer term to me
Komputerbay 32GB CF 266x

Sorry to say I don't have any experience with the silicon power and sandisk ones.. I do own a sandisk SD card, which is fine.

Wondering why and how you got that 7D though :p

I also have  KB 600x card. I get same performance and I am disappointed. :(

I doubt this one, PressureFM. Running benchmark on 650D (which is limited to 40 MByte/s, too) gives me write speeds up to 37.1 MByte/s. Sandisk Extreme Pro, 8 GB.

Ciao
Walter

Oswald, what camera are you using? ;o
I wouldn't know either if that makes sence, Walter Schulz. The 700D is supposed to be limited to a 40 MB/s write.

Should I get the sandisk extreme pro one? I am now able to record raw at 1344 x 562 flawless 24p. What are your max resolutions with the extreme pro cards?

I just hoped the Komputerbay cards would do 40 MB/s ;\

Dude, these look great..congrats. Now are these stills from a footage or just photos. The grain is soft enough to keep interesting but not distract much from the image ...real promising ..can't wait to install it on my T5i

Yep, those were stills from the raw footage ^^ The difference is huge, though it would be awesome to be able to record in a bit higher resolution.. but SD cards don't really seem to be fast enough, haha :p Show me some of your results too, when you get to it

Can anyone tell if the 1.1.3 version is alright? I'm still using the 1.1.1 version, but since the 1.1.1 Canon firmware can not be downloaded, I want to be sure that I'll be fine when installing 1.1.3 :p

Here are some of my benchmark results using the Komputerbay 32GB SDHC 600x on a 700D:

As you can see the one card got a maximum write speed of 28.9 MB\s, and the other card got a write speed of 30.1 MB\s.
The maximum resolutions that will consistently record 24p raw are 1280 x 536 for the first, and 1344 x 562 for the other card. Those are 2.39:1.
I recorded an 18GB raw file, 14.675 frames at 1344 x 562 with no problems. Taking the resolution up however, will result in 3 second files :(

The cards are rated to go at 40 Mb/s write and 90 MB/s read.
I formatted the cards as ExFAT with the default allocation unit size..

Am I using the right settings? Is 30 MB/s really the best i can get? SD cards don't really come faster :'(
Is it possible to tweak it a bit more, or format the card differently to get better results?

The Komputerbay SD cards come in 8Gb, 16GB and 32GB for SDHC. 64GB and 128GB for the SDXC ones. They say the 128GB card does 60 MB/s write, but for $ 125, I don't feel like trying it out.

Thanks ^^

Works great with my 700D!

Wasn't sure about things at first, but I got it installed finally and tried out some different things.
I haven't tried all features yet, but the HDR recording works very good in 50 fps 720p for slow movements. Flawless on a slow SanDisk class 6 card.

Raw recording is ok. I'm using a samsung 32GB SDXC which is rated for 40MB/s write, but does about 30MB/s for me :p I can record for about 30 seconds at 1344x562, which is 2.39:1 (30.2MB/s).. with hacks off. Frame rate varies from 23.973 to 23.983, but I'm not sure if even that's 100% accurate ;\ With this card I can only get a couple of seconds on higher resolutions. Getting some 600x komputerbay cards soon btw.
1728x972 (16:9) is the max I can set it to, when I go higher it will say ".... is not possible in current video mode (max 1728)." Not that I would possibly be able to record at that rate on an sd card.. 67.2MB/s.. or am I? xD

Largest .RAW file that I have (from recording at 1344x562) is a 923MB file containing an amount of 732 .dng images
I used the raw2dng_cs2x2.exe (pink dot removing raw2dng) to get the image sequence.

Here are some stills of some of my raw test shots using a 'Canon 50mm f/1.4', wide open to f2.2 in low light at 800 ISO.
These have only been quickly edited in Adobe Camera Raw, but NOT graded, NOT denoised, nothing else.
The image is noisy, but I prefer this over H.264 by far, especially for close up shots where the details are so much better.

(posted in original resolution, open the images by clicking if your screen is too small)

Hope this kind of helped, if there is anything else I can do to help improve this project, I would be glad to.

P.s. would anyone know a real good sd card for raw recording? And what would be the maximum 'actual' write speed for that?

Hello all, I'm new to the Magic Lantern firmware stuff :p
I read about it and it seems too good to be true :D

I own a Canon 700D, and I have a lot of questions :p

I posted some questions in here

I'm sorry but I'm new to Magic Lantern stuff, but what I see is much awesomeness :D
I wanna know if I should use this or not.. I have a Canon 700D, but I don't want to mess it up. :( Because I get warning after warning message when I download the firmware

What can I expect from the RAW video options? For how long would I be able to record video, and what fps etc?

What are the chances that it would destroy my camera?
Would it be better to wait for a stable version?

I know.. lots of questions, but I don't know who else to ask ;(
Thanks
