Raw Video / Questions from a beginner (ML-wise)
March 24, 2014, 10:57:46 AM
Please excuse me if I'm asking things some of you find very obvious, this forum is filled with very knowledgeable people who know seem to know almost everything surrounding the technology of videomaking and filming, so a beginner like me can find it to be a bit intimidating :)

But, I have three questions to start off with, and I am very thankfull for any help!

- When enabling Raw shooting, it automatically crops the LiveView/footage, which I understand is a feature, but is it a must? I mean, can I shoot 720p Raw video uncropped? If so, I must've missed it. I just realized I've never tried enabling 1080p Raw video, mostly because I know my CF-card won't handle it.

- I've tried to find a good workflow that doesn't take too much time - I've tried the Raw extracted to DNG frames, adjusted them in CameraRAW, imported to After Effects and then exported from there. But I feel as if this takes a bit too much time, and at this point I really dont NEED to export everything to DNG frames etc. Also, I do all my editing in Premiere CC, not After Effects (and Premiere didn't like importing all the DNG frames like AE).

So I've tried Raw to Cineform 444, which is quick and easy - but I'm just wondering, is this a good alternative? I understand it's a compressed format, but is this still better than the standard h.264 .mov? Meaning, does it retain more dynamic range, sharpness and overall image quality? I mean I understand that it probably does, but I have no idea how much, in a purely objective way.

- And lastly, I have the GoPro Cineform Studio Premium installed, and I'm using Rawanizer - then setting the output paramters in Rawanizer, I can choose 422, 444 and raw from what I understand. The thing is, the -raw parameter produces smaller files than 444, is that correct? Seems like they should be bigger..

I'm just wondering (and it's probably because I'm dumb :p), but.. I have GoPro Studio Premium installed, and I change the output parameters in Rawanizer from -422 to -raw, but the file it produces is still smaller than from what I get with 444.. is that correct?

Also, does anyone know of the quality comparison between Raw converted to Cineform 444  vs. the standard Canon .mov files?

Indeed I did, for various reasons:
- I prefer the rendering and bokeh of the Samyang
- I hated the EF's CA (same w/ the 1.2L, btw) - mostly heavy purple fringing which was near impossible to remove in ACR, so mostly I had to do it manually in PS
- actually 1.8 to 1.4 is 2/3 stops
- I don't really need AF - I work w/ lots of
vintage manual lenses anyway...

cheers all!

Yes, very true about the CA, luckily I've been able to fix those issues in my shots so far, but one day.. you never know! And looking at sample images, the bokeh is very nice on the Samyang. Thanks for the info!

Might pick one up and sell either one when I've decided which one I like the most :)

This is highly interesting, never tried trap focusing before, and this looks good!

> I have this lens and absolutely love it.  It gives such a nice effect, and holds such nice colours for such a reasonable priced piece of glass.
No question! I even sold my EF 85mm ƒ/1.8  ;)

I have the 85 1.8 too, but you're telling me you sold that in favor of this? Very interesting! Was a 0.4 f-stop worth more than AF? Or what else do you find that makes the Samyang preferable to the Canon?

I'm just curious, that's all :) I mean I could sell my Canon 85 and buy the Samyang, and have more money over :D

I would like to share a dual_iso picture just to show one of the big advantages of using the dual_iso module while having some dr with one shot.

Indeed, sharing a shot here that was also taken with dual ISO - maybe not the best example for a situation that has a lot of dynamic range, but still, the difference was noticeable that day from dual and non-dual iso shots :) Point is, dual iso takes away nothing from shooting moving objects.

Hardware and Accessories / Re: DSLR Controller
February 10, 2014, 06:14:42 PM
I'm sitting here, trying to get this to work, but it won't :/ Maybe I'm missing something.

First things first:
5D3 with ML 2.3 build Feb 03 2014
Samsung Galaxy S3 and also a Cube android tablet (tried both)
Latest version of DSLR Controller

To connect the devices, I use this in my android device:

Then a normal USB male to mini USB (just like the one that comes with the camera) to the 5D3.

So I've tried the devices mentioned above and two different cables, but DSLR Controller won't find the camera. What am I doing wrong? Am I supposed to have an adapter like that on the other end instead of the android device-end?
