General Chat / Re: Canon 70D Err 80 Brick
February 28, 2018, 06:19:14 AM
Hi a1ex,

Thank you for all your help, but I bit the bullet and made the leap over to the GH5 with T Cine Ultra Speedbooster.  I tried reaching out to my personal contact at Canon...and didn't have any luck.  I just can't trust that they fixed the underlying issue and risk having this fail in the field during a shoot.  I still hope to eventually repair it just for a backup body...but seems like I am out of the Magic Lantern community now for my daily body.

Thanks again,
Sean

Hi a1ex, thanks for your fast and thorough reply.  So I have tried the portable display test you mentioned with my existing ML card (which was in the camera at the time of the lockup and brick).  Sadly the camera is completely unresponsive, nothing displayed, no LED blinks at all.  I tried this with all three of my fully charged Canon batteries and in all sequences of card and battery insert.   At the moment I don't have another Canon body on hand to use another correctly installed ML copy, will try that as soon as I can borrow my friend's 5D mkIII, but am not holding out hope of a difference.  I've got my original ROM dumps from the camera and checked for any LOGs that might have been triggered when this lockup/brick happened, but the last is from the end of last month.  Would any of this be helpful?  I've had ERR80 happen before in the past, but it was usually just a battery eject and I was good to go, just like if you insert a MicroSD card adapter into most Canon cameras and close the card door without a MicroSD card in it (in fact this soft-bricked it harder with the requirement to first boot the camera with no card in it, before reinserting a card)

I'm not sure what you mean in regards to the RXDMPU pin route, since the forum you link to doesn't seem to have much beyond speculation about the center four grip pin pads purpose and no real final results, would you mind explaining your intention?

Yeah, the developers behind SPT have found the very interesting ability to throw the camera into Service Mode over the USB port which allows the camera to boot even while major circuit boards/LCD screens are missing/disconnected.  Additionally the ability to disable the flash via software so you can work on the internals without the capacitors charged, definitely something that would be nice even just so you don't shock yourself like a stun gun if you accidentally touch the contacts (taught myself the hard way about a year ago when I had to fix the viewfinder in my camera).

General Chat / Canon 70D Err 80 Brick
February 16, 2018, 06:47:18 AM
So I'm a long time user of the 70D and Magic Lantern on it since the early alphas...but tonight while playing with my camera and a new video rig setup (physical), my 70D err 80'd and locked up with what I thought in the moment was a low battery warning so I swapped out to another LP-E6N I had charging and the camera now won't respond or boot.  I have tried all the troubleshooting options and possibilities for soft-bricking related issues to micro-SD adapters, Magic Lantern issues, multiple different batteries, different lenses, booting in every mode, nothing displays anything on the camera or gets a single flash out of its busy light.  I'm highly suspicious of this being the Mainboard death issue I've now heard about in my search online of the symptoms which seems a common problem relatively on the 70D, and will try to reach out to some personal contacts at Canon Canada to see what I can have done...but suspect I will get the same run around on the issue as everyone outside of Brazil.  As someone who has done a lot of camera repair work myself, I am more than comfortable replacing the mainboard in the camera but would need the software to properly initialize it that outside of Canon SPT makes (http://www.spt.info/sptstore.php/canon-eos-70d/software-canon-eos-70d-professional-advanced).  I am wondering if anyone here owns this software because, from my research, the part and this software will cost me the same as doing the repair myself and very sadly, the software is HIGHLY model specific.

This could, unfortunately, push me out of Canon completely if I'm right...

Alright it is important to note the difference, log versus raw is very different.  It not only comes down to the dynamic range of the footage, but more importantly the bitdepth.  I will shoot with a log picture style for most of my work if I don't have to/plan to push the image to hard in my manual grade in post.  If you push the h264 files to hard the colours will heavily band and you will get blocking artifacts due to the heavy compression.  RAW on the other hand is 14bit (depending on RAW settings) versus h264's 8bit, it can be worked very hard before breaking down.  Personally my workflow is to take the RAW MLVs colour balance them and convert them to an arri standard log with some noise reduction before outputting them in Cineform, a GPU accelerated codec that outperforms ProRes and is resolution agnostic, to use in my NLE where I preform my final grade.

For me there is really two 70D issues of note.
Biggies
- Variable fps for video.  ~ doable but requires tweaking between the two known A & B timers.
- LCD Preview of 10bit Raw clip. I have seen raw_twk.mo for my 600D and it worked better. However on 70D it plays once and hangs the camera. Probably an overwrite or improper re-initialization.  This is doable but requires some scrutinizing.  I suspect it should be doable, since we can see LCD live display when shooting, stands to reason its not a throughput hang, so play-back looks doable.

Nice to have
- 24fps for 3X mode video, which enables highest resolutions (even 2k).  Right now best is 30fps. Probably get solved as part of the first item.

I wont have enough time until August.  But I want to.  But just to get the raw_twk.mo working would take 10bit raw from interesting to practical.
Agreed, rawtwk is the highly interesting side to me, hence in terms of my own focus, I want to work on that side.  Thanks to @Alex, I've got some more reading to do!

Answered on the download page - each camera port is done by volunteers who own the camera, in their spare time. There's no Magic Lantern organization that does project management or gives priority to this or that camera model - it's simply the camera owners showing enough interest for implementing or porting these features (not by asking, but by updating the source code on their own initiative).

So, your question could be rephrased as "why are the 5D3 and 700D owners reverse engineering their cameras, and publishing their progress without waiting for 70D owners to catch up?!"

FYI, on 70D there are some important unresolved issues (FPS override, raw overlays in photo mode) and so far nobody found the answer to them.

Also FYI, most of the recent progress I've been posting lately applies to 70D and all other cameras. However, a 70D owner (I'm not one of them) has to follow the same steps and customize them for each camera (rather than complaining) - and the same is true for most other camera models.
Hey Alex,

While I understand that these features haven't been fixed for the 70D, at least personally for me they are not critical and have far more interest in lossless compressed 10/12/14bit RAW to get more out of the camera.  You mention you need us to dig into customizing the work you have done for the 70D body, is there anything you can point me too to guide me a little what needs to be done?

Thanks in advance!

I had an additional thought as someone who has done a lot of research on intermediary formats for my editing workflow.  I know you are currently using the AVFoundation's AVAssetWriter class to export ProRes, but as someone who discounted ProRes a little while back in favour of the GPU accelerated preset resolution Cineform codec, do you think there is any chance export in such codec might be possible to add down the road?  It really is nice to be able to disregard working in only native resolutions for my intermediaries until final export to retain extra resolution where I have it available.

Hey martinhering, this is looking really impressive and perfectly on time with some plans I'm working on for moving into a raw workflow with my 70D, however I'm back on OSX 10.10.5 on my beastly 4770K Hackintosh and wondering if there might be any chance you could port the code back to Yosemite like I saw someone else enquire about.  I know you already dropped it back one to El Capitan, but I'm wondering if it would be possible to bring it back one more so I can jump in on the testing.  Thanks in advance, I eagerly await testing out this awesome looking app!

Hi folks,

I installed Beta3 on my 70D. I recorded video 1080p 25fps 50 3.5. I use the Zoom H6 as microphone with external microphone on 70D.
While recording averaging every 20s I see the message on display "external micrphone connected". Later on the movie file the audio has clicks as if the external microphone was disconnected for 15ms.

Since the audio quality is not good and I need the camera for production I removed ML. I hope in future we can use the audio menu in ML on the 70D. I would like to get it back on my camera - but only if it is stable.
Honestly with having used this since the first Alpha, I have had ZERO audio issues (Shure shotgun, Rode Filmmaker, and Sennheiser G3 all into camera), you simply received a warning because the mic reconnected.  This sounds 100% like your cable or the jack on you 70D, I suggest checking these first before considering it to be ML.  Magic Lantern in this case just seemed to warn you about something the default Canon firmware would not have.

Worked for me and it's definitely a combination of low resolution, low bitrate and high frame rate.  Also it looks like you don't use any sharpening in post and probably only in camera sharpening.

Checkout some videos on YouTube from people like Newman Films to see how to properly and fully utilize Canon DSLR video, it is definitely more work in post then that from point and shots but it can provide far better results.  Also personally I recommend checking out there Technicolor picture profile to provide you with the best dynamic range you can get out of your camera.  Just remember that the video then definitely requires work in post to bring it back to a rich vibrant image and that kind of colour work is an art in it self.

Interesting, I was under the impression that I was able to get the camera to shoot in 1080. But now that I think of it, I was actually choosing the "1280/60 IPB" Function, because I need the higher FPS. Even then, still uploading those clips into FCP put it into 720p automatically. Despite the fact that it was shot in 1280.. Formatting issue?
You can, but there was not a APS-C camera in Canon's lineup that could shoot 1080p 60 when the 70D came out, only now can the 7D MkII do this.  You need to be aware what you selected, you selected the lowest quality for the camera that you could above standard definition, 1280 is 1280x720, which is 720p.  You need to select 1920, otherwise known as 1920x1080 or 1080p for the best resolution possible.  Additionally you should be aware, that unless you are shooting sports 60 fps is not necessary and actually reduces the image quality over the lower frame rates as you are dividing more frames (potentially more then double over 24 fps), over a set bitrate per second of video.  Also note that while there is debate which compression with the same bitrate should provide the best image in this case IPB is the lower bitrate option and will suffer from less bit depth and more artifacting between frames and All-I should be used if you are trying to retain the highest quality.

Hey guys (and gals)

I'm posting because I just purchased the 70D a week ago, with the intentions of using 99% for video. I mainly shoot videos for youtube and decided that I wanted to go with a DSLR > HD Camera. I've been used to using the Canon G7X for most of my videos and have always been used to the shooting being extremely "crisp" in the standard 1080p, 60 fps format.

Long story short, I bought the 70D and filmed my first few shots with it. Went home, uploaded the clips into Final Cut Pro X. and IMMEDIATELY noticed how "grainy" and low quality the videos were turning out when I looked at them in the FCP window. Again, long story short... but I spent 3-4 days wondering what the hell was actually going on.. when I finally figured it out 2 nights ago. The camera has been techically shooting in 1080p, 60fps BUT UPLOADING IT IN 720P to my iMac.
I can't even upload the videos from my 70D to my iPhone. I just get a message saying "Content not supported".

So yesterday I contacted the manufacturer and figured I'd just return it. However, I'm wondering.. do you guys think that Magic Lanterning it will help me? Any functions on ML that will enable me to upload in 1080p?

Thanks guys!

Let's make something clear, if you think you are shooting in 1080p 60fps then you are very wrong on one of these as the camera is not capable of this resolution and frame rate.  You are either shooting in 1080p 30/24 or 720p 60.  The camera is not capable of transcoding the footage as you claim it is doing, ensure that you are connecting the camera to the computer via the USB cable or better yet, using an SD card reader and directly copying the files.  However before you do this, ensure you take control of your settings and check what resolution you are actually recording in, what video compression you are using (All-I or IPB), what film style you are using (all sharpening should be done in post for best results) and what your ISO, shutter and aperture settings are.

ML allows you to get a lot more out of the camera, but it is definitely best to ensure you can utilize the camera as it comes from Canon first, before diving into what ML has to offer.

@deafeyejedi I have some very fast card, sandisk extreme pros (komputerbay is good??) but i need 1080 @30p...

I did install ML and it's worth it just for the continuous recording but when i tried raw, it says something about missing a frame after a few seconds and stops.

If the answer is I can't do raw in 1080 30p then I'll have to stick with the stock settings for that but if there's a way..
No Simon, as mentioned in this thread from the start, the SD card interface hardware in the 70D is only capable of 40mb/s and therefore makes sustained 1080p in raw (even at 2.39 aspect) impossible to sustain much further then the internal image buffer.  It simply is not possible in any Canon camera that does not have a CF card at this point.

I have two questions (probably about ML generally)...

1. It is possible to turn on magic zoom only on manual focusing, but is it also possible to automatically turn magic zoom off after few seconds of inactivity with manual focus?
2. Is it possible to set different default shutter speed, ISO and aperture for switching to Live View mode? I usually take pictures on M with higher ISO and shutter speed than in video mode and it is frustrating to change these parameters every time I switch to live view and back.

Thanks.
Hi Thobias,

On your second question, I use C mode for my video work and M for most of my photography.  C retains my video settings like shutterspeed, ISO and most importantly picture profile, while M keeps me more in a photography setting.  Additionally since I shoot with a flat, desharpened picture profile (technicolor), I also use the mode specific settings option in ML so that when I turn on my camera in C and Movie mode, it has my movie specific settings including contrast, saturation, and sharpening in Digic turned on and when I boot the camera in M and photography mode it turns these off and uses my more photography specific settings in ML.  I also then keep settings in C and photography for when I am wanting to shoot timelapse.

Discovering how to utilize these mode specific settings really improved the usability of ML for me now that I use more and more in ML.

Note though that in my experience, formatting in camera after switching any 32gb or small card to ExFat will return it to Fat32 as that is the default for Canon Firmware for smaller cards...

I see, well that could be it. I just assumed everyone was filming at 16:9 ratio. Thanks for that reminder! Is there a reason why you choose 2.39:1 than other resolutions?
For me it is two fold, one it allows for more horizontal resolution, closer to my ideal delivery and second because I artistically love the classic Cinerama and Cinema Scope look and 2.39 being the modern equivalent.  Additionally I like that it more fully utilizes the true view angle of my lenses, allowing me to get closer to the 18mm of my Sigma lens.

Well the issue is that some people report continuous 720p RAW recording and also ~15 seconds 1824x1026 recording, which I cannot get those lengths without frame dropping.
Double check what aspect ratio you are using versus them. Personally I can also get continuous at just over 720p, but using 2.40:1.

I hate to point out guys, but 39-40MB/s on the 70D's 40MB/s SD card interface is about the best we can expect...

@dussan07: I only experienced freezes when using electronic level and facetracking being enabled (see 1st post). It might be useful to know which setting you exactly tried to change when your cam froze. Try to use another battery and also check your battery card door. Switch your cam to "C" mode. Your cam should at least boot up without a sdcard inserted...

@Technopilot: Please remove the links, especially the first one. It's the ROM dump which isn't allowed to be posted publicly and yes, please try to replicate with 22th Dec build as your config files indicate the use of the previous Beta-2b build. Does your issue only happen with that micro-sdcard+adapter??

If you got crashes then the cam might have put LOG files starting with CRASH../ASSERT.. on your sdcard. These are the interesting ones to post.
Oops, sorry for that, they've been removed!  Sadly there were no crash logs.  It locked up only while off, refusing to boot, requiring battery and SD card removal to restore camera function.

I reformatted and started with a fresh install with the new build, just transferring over my settings folder and the additional module and so far no issues, the lockup is gone.  I tried different adapters, this didn't change it, this reformat did though.

Anyways, having fun on Beta 3 now, will let you know my experiences.

Hi all,

So I've run into a rather serious freezing problem myself.  My camera will reliably lockup while stored in my bag and turned off with a micro sd card running Beta 2 on it in the camera.  When I try to turn it on after taking it out, it is as if the battery is dead, however if I turn remove the battery and then the sd card and then reinsert the battery with the ML loaded card out, the camera will boot.  I can then reinstall the card and reboot to get into ML.  This lockup has occurred quite reliably when simply switching off and back on the camera.  This was not an issue I was having until recently, the only change I have done is started using mode specific boot settings (Edit: I also added the advanced intervalometer module).

Any thoughts guys?  I'm going to move up to the Beta 3 for the time being and see if I can replicate the issue.

Cheers,
Sean

On the headphone monitoring: I use canon factory made cable  (a/v out to cinch) + 3.5 mm adapter to plug the headphones. Im only getting loud noise in my ears and the LCD screen turns immediately black after I plug the cable into the dslr. It dosen't matter modes. Just the noise seems to change a bit every time I press any of buttons.

Canon 70D - 70D.111A 26th November: Beta-2b
You should be very careful, as stated you are potentially shorting out connections.  The 70D ML firmware is not setup to allow headphone monitoring, it is something that I've been told might just not be possible with the Digic 5 processor.  Also I will point out that the cable to allow headphone monitoring on the cameras that have this hack in ML, still use a specially modified Canon cable to allow it to work and make the proper connections.  Just my two cents of advice.

The idea behind modules is that they are camera independent and can be distributed separately. There's no real reason advanced intervalometer needs to be configured into the main repo. It's easier if I just maintain it myself. You can find the download link is in the first post: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=8431.0

I don't see any reason it wouldn't work with 70D, but you never know until you try it.
Awesome, thanks for the link and explanation @dmilligan, I've downloaded the module and will try it out in the 2B beta!  Sorry for my newbieness on how modules work!

I think720p clean outs is perfectly good for internet streaming.  Some folks might want to cover and event or shoot an internet series with their 70D, and its quite suitable for that.  However you should really have EOS utility or DSLR controller on the usb, as you want to be able to pull focus through the mouse/screen.  This makes up for a blanked LCD (sheesh what a poor design to blank the LCD IMHO).
This is true, I had not considered that usage, however for using the camera in an internet streaming role, I've instead just used this software and the USB connection without the need for ML and providing full control (Nikon or Canon):

http://sparkosoft.com/sparkocam

This seems like a better option all around as long as you can run a Windows environment, unless you want you use a wireless HDMI live broadcast system (usually well north of $2,000), but then I question why you are using the 70D and not at least moving up to a camera that has clean HDMI out.

Hey Nikfreak, I've been doing some research and learning on timelapse cinematography using ML and I'm curious if it might be possible in future to integrate the Advanced Intervalometer module into the 70D build?  Is it something you have considered and found a stumbling block?  Or just something you haven't looked at yet?
