General Help Q&A / CF Card Space Update
June 25, 2015, 09:27:11 PM
Wondering why when i record and then stop recording ML doesn't show me the updated space on my card. To see that I have to turn off my camera then back on again.

Yeah. the sharpness is an issue of upload size/compression and the compression that Vimeo does. I've changed how I upload things now to combat that. Thanks for the comments though. Hard to keep a camera perfectly stable on a mono pod. Got a new tripod though so that will help.

I noticed that it's only for the Mark II. I have a Mark III, should I consider getting that filter or is it not needed in the III?

You can always use a good old polarizing filter on the lens. That will help keep the clouds from blowing out.

Share Your Videos / Italy & Martha's Vineyard Footage
February 02, 2015, 07:57:05 PM
I used some footage from Martha's Vineyard I already posted a little while ago and some Italy footage I had to piece together a quick spot.

Shot on my Mark III with ML, Sigma A 24-105, color graded in Resolve.

Hi Andy, I'm wondering if you can be a bit more specific when you talk about negative blur. I'm trying to play around with some footage and I'd like to try and do what you're talking about, however i've never used blur or mist before. I was able to switch the layer to YUV and turn off the two layers as you described, but how do i effect only Y layer with negative blur.

Thanks,
J

This is my first time posting some original footage I took and finally had the time to go through and grade. I would love any feedback on the look.
Shot on my Mark III hand-held and on a mono pod, graded in Resolve. Just slapped it together with some music to make it a bit more consumable.

Very nice. I've been looking at Cinelog for resolve. What are your thoughts on using it and how it works with MLV.

Thanks,

i'm using the mac version with my MLV files and I get very weird split images on each dng file. It's like someone took a brush with pink paint and went across the file. Not sure what's going on.

Any help appreciated. I'm set to the default Log-C.

Totally get the quality of focus, but the image itself is what I was really interested in seeing a comparison of. Thoughts?
#11
Would you say that the lenses you chose played a major role in the look of the image? I'm asking because i'm using the Sigma A series lenses and would like to compare them to the lenses you used to see what if any difference there is in the image. You've achieved a very nice look.

Any photos of your rigs that you can post for us to see?

Wow! Very nice. Can you please let us in on some of how you shot this? Lenses, exposure, grading.

Thanks

I really like the look you have for the interview. Can you go into more about how you achieved it? I'm specifically interested in the interview at 7:09.

General Help Q&A / Choosing ISO settings
October 20, 2014, 10:50:31 PM
I'm reading that it's better to choose the iso setting via ML, however i'm wondering if that means i need to go into the settings every time and change the iso setting there or can i use the iso button on the Mark iii to set my iso while ML is running, taking into account that the ML iso is different than the one i see?

Alternatively, i'm also wondering how to reduce the noise i see in the dark regions when ETTR. Are there optimal settings aside from the correct iso that will help with that?

Thanks,
J

great shots. what did you use to do the hand-held work? What did you use for color grading?

I really liked the shots. not sure of the story though. it's more of a teaser.

Re-post because i think it got lost in the mix and i'd love anybody's thoughts on what's going on here.

Just installed 1.2.3 on my Mark III and have had no problems shooting etc. One thing however i've noticed is that when i plug in my HDMI monitor and turn on my camera i do not get my ML. It seems to default to the normal Canon video monitor screen. I was able to access the ML settings by hitting the trash can but that's about it. When I go ahead and turn off mirroring on the canon menu then ML appears on the monitor however i thought that with 1.2.3 you were able to get mirroring.

thoughts?

So i'm shooting at 23.976 and I bring into Camera Raw, correct than open in AE. The file is now saying it's 30fps. when i put into a timeline and then render out it's 30fps and of course plays fast.

Thoughts? Is ML not recording at the appropriate frame rate? I'm trying to find out how to change it if for some reason i want to shoot at say 29.97 one day, but i haven't figured out how to do that.

In any event i'm not sure what's going on with the conversion along the way. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I'm running 1.2.3 on a Mark III and i'm not able to get mirroring to work either. In fact if i have mirroring enabled i get only the standard cannon screen on both. When i turn mirroring off i get the ML screen on my hdmi monitor. Not sure why but i thought mirroring was enabled on 1.2.3.

Walter, i have to apologize i'm a complete idiot. I locked the card. The moment i brilliantly realized this i unlocked it, put it into the camera and now everything is working. Well i hope at least if anybody else does something like this and is tearing out their hair, they'll find this post quickly.

Good to know how to go through the process thought. thanks.
#22
well I tried wiping the folder with the directory off the card and adding a new one on (i assume that's what you were suggesting). unfortunately now nothing sticks. I can't even activate MLV, re-boot the camera and have that stick.

Thoughts?

BTW, if i want to just start from scratch (using 1.2.3) how is the best way to proceed? Do i remove all content from the card by dumping them into the trash on my computer and then placing them all back in from a fresh download of the nightly build, then go back into the camera to do a fresh firmware update?

Thanks,
J

I will try to wipe the card and re-load the ML files and see if that works tomorrow.

Walter, i went to config files and scrolled down to save config now, however it won't let me do anything with it. There is an arrow to it's left but when i push set or scroll nothing happens.

BTW, should config preset be off and config autosave be on? If not please tell me what i should choose.

Thanks

Thanks Walter, i'll give that a try and report back.
