Congrats on the 1.2.3 ML achievements so far (the bootflag issue being one really important one)! I also noticed the "experimental badge" (I forgot the excact phrase) was removed from the 1.2.3 nightly builds.

I guess this is a stupid question, with no definite answer. Still, I hope some of you could share some thought about the stability of the 1.2.3 nightly build as of today? Many stability issues still needing a lot of work? Sorry again for posting this question - but it's so hard to get a sense of where we all are in the thrilling ML development. I know testing and contributing is the main factor and I will do that as well :)

Thanks a lot for your work on this tool! Easing the raw workflow is really one of the most important areas for unleashing the potential of magiclantern.

I'm really on thin ice here, so forgive me if I'm thinking wrong. But my dream for this workflow would be to directly convert MLV into (compressed) CDNG (as @Nautilus mentioned). Reducing the file size, including audio elegantly, and having native file support within premiere would be insane! (and from what Adobe are blogging, they continiously work an enhancing the CDNG support/BlackMagic camera support).

I would gladly donate for such tool, but I also understand this might be impossible..

This requires thorough feedback from you about what works well and what not. See the posts from dmilligan from this thread.

I totally understand you and dmilligan. And this is the classic egg/chicken problem, because the reality for me (and I guess a lot others) is that I don't dare testing ML at this point. It's not clear which release (is safe enough) to use for the 5d3, and using nightly builds sounds to dangerous for a guy who's nervous to harm the camera.

So even though I want to help, how can I give any testing/feedback, when I don't even dare to install it... Because of this I'm probably not in the target group for ML for now (and I totally understand that). But knowing the positive vibe around the ML project, and the already long and impressing track record, my idea was this approach with labeling a few basic features "beta reliable" in a release. By doing that a new user base would dear to engage in the project, providing feedback etc. (but again, this is just from a user perspective - from what I now read, I understand this is easier said then done ofcourse)

Discuss.

Just a perspective from a doc filmmakers view:
I think it sounds like a great idea to consolidate and simplify! From a typical end user point of view, magic lantern is still a hard to get into because the potential is so great, but the technical barriers to start using it is challenging for many people (just my perspective ofcourse). Not necessarily the steps involved to actually use it, but the sum of the uncertainty of how stable it is, what build to use, and then the steps involved to "install" it. And that keeps it from getting into the hands of many users (who could contribute to the project - mostly feedback and donations ofcourse).

I think the project would attract a larger userbase if it was possible to make the ML releases into something that separates the more stable functions and the "in development" functions:

Maybe I'm way off here, but what if it was possible to make e.g. a 5D3 build (or whatever cam) with core functionality like focus peaking and zebras (maybe some other stable functions) that is ok to indicate as "more stable". ALL other functions like RAW etc can be marked as experimental/alpha (e.g. clearly separated in the menus), so people know when they move from the more stable to the other functionality. In that scenario, maybe it would be possible to brand it a beta release? (using myself as a case, I would definetly jump onboard using ML, seeing a beta tag, just knowing that focus peaking and zebras were beta-stable)

I'm just thinking like this because I know from my own experience that I'm hesitant to use ML at all, with so many builds, different statements about what build to use, if the released alphas (which are quite old now) is safer to use etc. etc.

I'm sorry if these ideas are of limited value, just some thoughts from an end user. Also a huge thanks to all contributors in the project. I'm speechless of what's beeing achieved, and I really hope it will reach an even bigger audience soon :)
