Hi, my ProRes conversion is very slow.  Probably 3-4 fps.  Is that normal, or is there something I'm not doing here?  I'm running v1.16 and converting 5dmkIII 1920x818 24fps footage on a Macbook Pro Retina with 16GB Ram.  Recording to internal SSD, so there shouldn't be a bus or read/write speed issue.

I get realtime transcoding from DNG with Resolve, so the issue must be the program.

Should I be expecting faster transcoding, or is this as good as it gets?

Thanks, I did experience some glitches.  After starting up the camera, the first recording would usually automatically stop at :07.  Even if I had card warmup enabled.

I also had problems with the camera just freezing and requiring a battery removal seemingly at random.  Usually after extended periods of shooting.

At higher ISO's (or extreme color grading), I see regular patterns of vertical bands appear in darker or more saturated areas.  And hot pixels are an absolute plague above ISO 3200 or so.

I attempted to use MLV, but I had such inconsistent performance (even at reduced resolutions) that I scrapped the idea and stayed with RawRec.

I worked with a Dubai-based creative agency to produce these videos showcasing the first, business, and economy cabins of Etihad Airways, the national airline of Abu Dhabi.  We had to really move fast in tight quarters, so I shot everything handheld on 5dmkIII in RawRec.  We had a small dolly for some of the walking shots.

RawRec --> Rawmagic --> Resolve, export flat (BMDFilm) --> FCP X (Apply LUT + EOSHD 5dMKIII LUT)

Stabilized in post with Coremelt Lock & Load.

Edit: visited your Vimeo page - and am now a follower. It is funny, only the other day I mentioned to a friend how I found the philip bloom way of editing somewhat contrary to my sense of appeal. His composition and storyline is brilliant but the edit style is a bit patchy for my liking. My personal opinion. However, it was difficult for me to explain to my friend what I meant and what is it that I wanted to see differently.

Now, I have your content to show him! It is like the missing link.

Thank you!  Everything was shot handheld and stabilized in post.  I'm planning a blog post with details on workflow, but it was basically: Convert RAW to DNG via Rawmagic, import into Resolve, fix white balance and set gamma to BMD Film, export ProRes 422.  Then edit and color correct/grade in FCP X using the native tools plus some plugins like Apply LUT and TKY Highlight and Shadow (for tonal correction).

Glad you like the editing style! I try to keep the pace brisk, even if I'm editing fairly static footage. It's a movie after all, and movies should move.

i wonder how you've convinced people to go for raw in dubai. so far everyone is scared, and keeps preferring that i shoot on the fs700

Hi, thanks! Everything was handheld and stabilized in post.  Most of the lenses I were using were unstabilized (Rokinon cine lenses) so I just relied on FCP X's internal stabilizer and Lock & Load's stabilizer to smooth out the jitters.

As for convincing people to go for raw...I'm working with a young team at a progressive creative agency.  They trust me.  If the raw fails, it's my ass, but so far so good.

Beautiful images! Colors are not overdone but still very vibrant.

Thanks! I've been struggling a bit with the vimeo upload...I think it darkened the colors a little.  But yes, I was trying to keep it overall realistic looking.

I've been using the 5dmkIII raw for some commercial work in Dubai.  Here's a video I made in my spare time showcasing the region's many visual contrasts, highlighting people and places I don't often see in other travelogues.

Testing the 5dmkIII slow motion on a rollercoaster (why not?)  I was able to get continuous recording at 1600x500.  Also some regular-motion stuff in this clip.

do you know the unix path of this drive?

I'm really not Terminal-savvy.  But neither my Thunderbolt nor USB drives appear as output options.

Batch processing with the latest version is OK now...I did have that same issue earlier.

As for external drives, they show up in the main GUI window, but not when I choose a destination for output. It's not a matter of needing to refresh the folder directory.

Hi, I'm on Mavericks (10.9.1) and have installed MLV Browser along with Mono MRE.  I'm not too tech savvy with this stuff, so go easy...

But I've gotten it to transcode MLV to DNG with WAV (awesome)! My question is this: when choosing an output directory, MLV Browser doesn't seem to recognize my external hard drives (connected via Thunderbolt).  Is this a limitation of this program, or is there a way for me to output directly to my Thunderbolt drive?

Yes, 256gb appears in-camera if I format from computer...well, actually 238GB or something.  Whatever the card actually holds.

I did a few more quick tests:

- approx 146GB seems to be a stopping point for continuous 24p recording. Not sure why. Slow spot on the card?  I have emailed Komputerbay for tech support on this.

- Recording at 48p (FPS Override), I'm getting about 6 seconds at 1920x672, 8 seconds at 1856x650, 1:30 to 2:00 at 1728x606, and continuous recording at 1600x560.  Global draw off.

I just realized something...

The 5dmkIII is supposed to sense the card's capacity and format EXFAT internally to use the entire capacity.  It didn't do that for me - formatted as 128GB instead, presumably Fat32.  Any ideas why?

I only tried 24p @ 1920x1080.  I have yet to post process the files, so I don't know if I got any pink/bad frames.  But I was able to fill up the card with only one re-start of the recording button (around the 26 minute mark).

I formatted EXFAT via Macbook Pro.  Transcend USB 3.0 card reader.  The in-camera formatting reduces visible capacity to 128gb.

Once I'm confident in the 24p recording I will attempt higher framerates/resolutions.

Hi everyone, I got a 256GB card and just did a first trial on the 5dmkIII.  Formatted it EXFAT with a Transcend USB 3.0 card reader.  Did a continuous recording test at 1080p24.  I got about 26 mins continuous before it automatically stopped.  I re-started the recording and it filled up the rest of the card.  Haven't reviewed the footage for bad frames, but it appears stable at 24p at least.

Hi, one thing you might want to be aware of is the speed of your pans...in 24p you have to pan really slowly or things will get blurry. Also, web compression looks bad on pans (or any fast motion).  So to enhance the appearance of sharpness, keep your camera movement slow and deliberate.

No Steadicam...just walking steady and stabilizing in FCP X.

Updating again...I've now gone through about 5 or 6 cycles of filling up/dumping/formatting two different 128GB 1050x cards with 1920x1080p 5dmkIII footage, and I haven't had any problems with either one.

Maybe I just got lucky, but so far these cards are working perfectly for me.

Update...I just formatted my card from Fat 32 to ExFAT and recorded a continuous 24 minute clip.  So far so good.

I've been testing one of these 1050x 128GB cards repeatedly for the last several hours.  It always stops at 8:37.  What's causing that? I have no idea. But I'm happy as long as I'm getting predictable performance.  The card is fast enough; I just can't record takes longer than 8:37, which is plenty for me.
