Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 5D Mark II / 5D2
« on: June 14, 2022, 12:47:18 AM »
Is there a capability for 5D2 to record in 10 and/or 12 bit lossless?

Is there a card overclock for 5D2?

Great. I wonder, what speed would it give with overclocking.

Was the card reader overclocked?

It seems that for most applications the common h.264 is the best solution. For instance, to shoot a presentation, a concert, a conference. That's what I'm doing mostly. I was thinking of shooting a full concert in lossless, but it looks like it makes no sense whether I shoot it in lossless or in h.264. There's nothing to shoot in lossless - no either pretty interiors, there are just plain clean walls behind the musicians. If the concert took place in the palace, then, perhaps... We have some beautiful places here, but there are not any concerts in these places. I mean classical music concerts of course - the famous Russian piano school, etc.

Of course it's all about MLV App.

Sharpening at the raw step makes video truly sharper, this kind of sharpening cannot be got later, IMHO.

Please tell me what is right and what is wrong in this video, apart from the operator work.

6
I'm working in MLV App, so I'm talking about sharpening in this program. Why is it wrong to sharp raw footage when exporting to ProRes? It makes video look better, this is my workflow.

OK, here's the link to H.264 compressed 1080P version of 2.5K footage: https://disk.yandex.ru/i/fz8obGH9gBAYCg It's to your judgment.

7
So what is it for?

Right now I'm using "3K 1:1" mode at 2560x1440 @ 25 fps, 1/100 sec, ISO 160 (ISO 100 in sunny day), 14 bit lossless, card spanning, sharpen=80. I'm getting an ultra-sharp image with Canon 24-105 L IS USM lens. I've shot the video with the ship departing from the pier, 3 mins, later coded to ProRes 422 HQ. Almost 7 GB. If anybody wants I'll give a link to this video.

General Chat / Re: Best camera for video interview / documentary
« on: May 30, 2021, 10:55:17 PM »
I haven't been shooting in RAW so far, and not sure if it's something I'd need at this point. More important to me would be the ability to shoot for longer that 20 or 30 minutes at a time (=continuous shooting???) as I'm loathe to interupt the flow of an interview which can last up to 2 hours or more, but hate to miss anything too.
What's the point of shooting an interview in RAW (or lossless)? Just one or two heads on the screen. No source for vivid colors, no nature photography, etc.

I've got a lot of noise in the shadows when shot with crop 1080p mode.

The crop of a finished pic is not a whole picture taken with a smaller part of a sensor. The more is the crop, the more light and/or the more sensitive sensor we need to achieve the same s/n as with no crop.

Yes, that's it. The lesser crop is and the more lens aperture is, the lesser noise we would have. Considering the fact that the sensors that were used in those Canon cameras are quite old and aren't backlit sensors - the BSI increases the sensor's sensivity.

Best to use Crop_Mode and record @ 2k(or 1080p) it's non line skipping (even line used)
You just need to use a 15mm-24mm lens to get the same framing as a 50mm for example .
One not only just needs a wide angle lens, but also a lot of light, and this is not always possible.

I would like it to run 1920 x 874 which is  a aspect ratio of  2.2:1 a total pixels: 1678080 (a bit lower than the settings above at 16:9)
Is this possible without  entering crop mode?
You can easily make Full HD out of what you have now by upscaling the video using MLV App. No one will notice the difference between the true 1080p and the upscaled one.

It's OK, the common h.264 movie ALL-I mode works good, the bitrate depends on the contents of the image.

But, I'm still going to shoot an interview in RAW.

17
I think it's better to use an external recorder like Zoom H5.

wib
That is, I have to switch the patching off, the SD will be slow, and I'll also have to turn card spanning off?

ArcziPL
5D3 is already a professional camera. But IMHO it's h.264 video is of much lower quality than lossless 14 bit.

Build version is Nightly.2021Feb07.5D3113. Built on 2021-02-07.

I'm using SanDisk Extreme Pro 170 MB/s 64 GB. Not a fake. CF card is Sandisk Extreme Pro 160 MB/s 128 GB, not a fake.

I'm imaging I'd go to make an interview, fly thousands of miles by plane both ways, ask a man everything I want to know about him, and finally, when I'll get home, it'd appear that there's no sound in most of clips. That's it, the life is over.

19
Recorded a clip yesterday. 1920x1080, 14 bit lossless, card spanning on, SD speed up patching is on. There was NO sound in the last minute of the clip, that is, it has disappeared. I've done nothing with the camera during the shooting and connected no external mike. I was lucky the clip is not that important. So, I'm reporting the problem.

20
I often use the common movie mode when there's no need for highest quality, and I always want to shoot "ALL-I". But for some reason I cannot do that, although the appropriate Canon menu is set to "ALL-I" (1080p 25 fps). And it works though time - one time it may work, the other time it may not work. What am I to do?

21
I'm planning to use it for slow motion while shooting certain sport events and/or workouts. Not aiming to be like Riefenstahl (it is impossible), but I have several ideas and hope that ML would help me.

22
Done that, set Bit depth to 10 bit, and the mode works. Thank you!

23
Cannot get the camera working at 1920 50p mode for more than 15-20 sec. The settings are: autofocus off, stab off, 720 50p in Canon menu is on, Kill GlobalDraw is on, Card Spanning is on, SD is overclocked. I've tried ALL-I and IBP modes.

Anyway, it gives the following:

Thank you so much, never knew of that.

UPD: the Full-res LiveView mode finally works. But the workflow on my 2008 Mac Pro is a piece of... something.

Using Dec 11 2020 mod. Cannot run Full-res LiveView mode. Card Spanning is on, preferred card is CF. Using best recommended cards. What am I to do?

Otherwise, great mode.
