How are you getting this new 14 Bit Lossless, and where are the options for 12 Bit and 8 Bit etc etc

I've got the latest nightly build, I've tried MLV 2.0, MLV lite, what am I missing here?

I think the various bit modes are only part of experimental builds for now (not nightlies). It's called compressed raw, and the 4k crop experimental firmware has it as well:

One of the weddings I shot this year was with a friend - I was shooting 5D mkiii raw (mlv) and he was shooting with a GH4. The overall 5D mkiii raw image, when post-processed correctly, blows the GH4 out of the water. He told me that he had to "water down" my images so that they would match the GH4 in the edit.

Storage space is definitely an issue though, even when shooting highlight style wedding films. I typically end up recording about 150 GB worth of footage for a 3-6 minute highlight film, and I try not to shoot much more than I actually need.

Also, you'll need to make sure that you do quite a bit of testing before you go to shoot a wedding. There are limitations to framerate / frame size that you need to be keenly aware of - if you venture outside those limitations, you're bound to miss a very important shot due to an automatically stopped recording.

If you do want to go the magic lantern raw route, I would recommend 5d mkiii over mkii. The down-sampling technique in the 5D iii is FAR better than the one used in the 5Dii (binning vs. line skipping), thus the 5Dii will have horrendous aliasing/moire unless you add the Mosaic VAF. The 1080P raw image from the 5d mkiii is moire/aliasing free for all practical purposes.

By the time you add a VAF to the 5Dii, you could have spent a few hundred more and gotten a used 5Diii with a superior image that doesn't require you to be taking a filter out every time you want to shoot high resolution stills.

Thanks for this great application chmee!

I would be overjoyed if you were able to get the audio timecode to play nicely with Resolve 12 on windows! I have yet to find a converter for windows 10 that spits out audio files that resolve will correctly recognize.

EDIT: I tried version 1.6.1 per your advice, and I found that audio conversion was much better - with v1.6.1, the audio works seamlessly with Resolve 12.1 on windows. When the same clip is converted with 1.7.4, Davinci keeps the audio and video separate (in old versions of Resolve, it would import an empty audio track with the video when you drag the clip onto the timeline).

Whatever you were doing with audio/timecode in 1.6.1 works much better with resolve than the latest version of raw2cdng.

Hope this helps with development of the latest update!

Might have to do with how the camera down-samples to that particular output resolution? Try shooting 1.85 @ 1920 width, I'll bet you get far less aliasing/moire.

I'm trying to solve the same problem, but with no luck in Resolve. Has anyone figured out how to get raw audio to work correctly straight off the camera in Resolve (windows)?

I think Resolve 12 actually has an audio syncing tool built in. Now if I could just find an MLV converter that allows my in-camera audio to work correctly right off the bat in Resolve......

I can't remember exactly how much I shot, but it was probably on the order of 180GB. For this one, I only delivered the highlight style reel, but in the future I plan to also offer the entire ceremony / beginning of reception unedited as shot by another static camera set up on a tripod in case they really want to re-watch the whole thing.

I personally think trying to create an edited wedding film longer than about 7 or 8 minutes is kind of like trying to add filler to meet a "required" length on an essay - it shows, and waters down what would have otherwise been a cohesive and powerful effort.

Basically I just set it to 720p 60 fps in the cannon menu (accessed with the "Q" button), then turn on fps override and set it to 48 (ends up being like 48.015 after you tell it 48). Adjust shutter speed to 1/100 and make any necessary exposure adjustments then start rolling.

Missed focus was just user error....there's a lot happening pretty fast for a single shooter at the weddings so I missed focus in a couple spots in my hurry to start recording. I always have live view on (can't imagine shooting without it).

Get yourself a fast card man, raw is in a different league than h.264. I finally get that cinematic look that I've always wanted.

Yes, I tried raw2cdng, and it leads to the exact same thing. Resolve is able to play the file if you copy the same wav file from the converted dng folder to another folder, and then add the copied wav file to your "media" on the media page in resolve. This is really frustrating...has anyone figured out how to get resolve to import audio properly with raw clips?

This was shot with August 2014 build of 1.2.3. It has been pretty stable for me as long as I don't do something weird (like forget to turn off FPS override when switching back to higher resolution for 24fps....doh). It would be amazing if there were a way to have FPS overrride automatically enable/disable when you switch resolution/framerate in canon menu.

For slow motion I shot it at 48 fps and stretched/slowed it down to 24 fps in resolve.
Lens wise I just used 24-105L and EF 50mm f1.4. I try to keep the workflow as straightforward as possible-
Video: Mlrawviewer -> Resolve (edit and grade). I made primary whitebalance, saturation, and exposure adjustments on raw tab, adjusted gamma/lift on first node as necessary, then used one of Juan Malera's free Kodak LUTs at ~60% opacity on the second node for everything.
External Recorder Audio (Zoom H4n in front of PA speaker) -> Reaper (compression, levels adjustment etc...) -> Resolve
Syncing external audio was a nightmare, but that was because Resolve wasn't giving me sound with converted dng files (I suspect because I recorded at 44.1kHz and Davinci doesn't like something about the way that mlrawviewer resamples to 48kHz, I need to do some more testing here...)

Do you guys have any fancy tricks for syncing external audio? I wish pluraleyes was available for Resolve....
Also, I wonder if Resolve 12 will support standard VST audio plugins? I would cut Reaper out of the audio chain if I could.

Shot a wedding in raw a while back, and I'm very happy with the results! Many thanks to the Magic Lantern team for transforming the 5D3 into a monster of a camera!
Now, if I could just figure out a more efficient way to sync external audio in Resolve next time...

Edit: Just realized that I posted this in the wrong area...sorry mods. Can someone move it to "share your videos"?

Raw Video / Audio Missing in Resolve
July 05, 2015, 07:04:54 PM
Hi,

I'm shooting mlv on a 5D3, with audio module enabled (at 44.1khz). When I convert the mlv into DNGs using mlrawviewer, I get a wav file in the folder with the DNGs as you would expect, and the wav file plays just fine in windows media player. However, when I add the clips to my timeline in resolve, the audio clip appears to be added to the timeline, but the sound is missing (no waveforms, it's not just too quiet).

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Nathan

Keep in mind (as you will see in those tests) that the cards don't always live up to their speed rating. That's why people are having much better luck with 1066X cards than 1000X, even though 1000X is supposed to be faster than the camera is capable of writing. 1066X cards give you more wiggle room when a particular card isn't actually as fast as its sticker says it is.

Yes, the 64GB 1066X cards are fast enough to do at least 1920x1080 24P RAW (maybe even 30 fps...I haven't tested that though). You don't have to buy a high capacity card, you just need to make sure the card is fast enough. Keep in mind that the 5D3 compactflash slot is only capable of writing at a maximum of ~100 MB/s. There's an extensive thread where people tested various cards, and the 1066X 64GB cards seem to be faster and more reliable than the larger capacity cards with an equivalent speed rating (at least for Komputerbay, not sure if that holds true for other manufacturers):

You can use this handy tool to calculate how much footage (time) you will get on a card at a particular resolution & frame rate:

Raw Video / Re: 30 frames VS 24 Frames.
April 21, 2015, 12:37:18 AM
You're right if we're talking about 50 years ago, but my point is: there's a reason we stuck with the 24 fps standard after having the technology to produce motion pictures at any frame rate we want without affecting sound quality. It comes down to 2 possibilities: 1) psychological conditioning i.e. we're just accustomed to 24 fps because that's what we've always seen in movies and thus we associate it with the "cinematic" aesthetic, or 2) some common human psychological factors which, independent of conditioning, cause us to suspend our disbelief with far more ease when we are given slightly less temporal information at 24 fps as opposed to 30.

I tend to think it's the latter, but I could be wrong :)

http://gizmodo.com/5969817/the-hobbit-an-unexpected-masterclass-in-why-48-fps-fails

The choice of 24 fps over 30 fps has a lot more to do with psychology and human perception than technical numbers on paper. Nearly every film you've ever seen was shot in 24 fps, and for a very good reason (Hollywood has had access to cameras capable of shooting high frame rates for a long time, and yet 24 fps remains the golden standard for very good reasons described by Mr. Laforet in that write-up)

The 5D3 won't output 14 bit RAW/MLV over the HDMI port unfortunately. It's a limitation of the camera, not the Atomos recorders.

It will output "clean" video over the HDMI port, but it is still in a compressed format. The only way to get full resolution continuous uncompressed RAW/MLV is to record to fast CompactFlash cards. The good news is that Komputerbay sells very fast CF cards for relatively cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Komputerbay-Professional-Compact-Flash-Extreme/dp/B00J9OS4V0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429550047&sr=8-1&keywords=komputerbay+64gb

I have two of those and they have worked really well so far.

Duplicate Questions / Crop marks while recording? (5d3)
January 20, 2015, 12:38:44 AM
Is it possible to display the 2.39:1 crop marks while recording raw? I'm using the latest 1.2.3 nightly build (from August) and have global draw turned on, but the crop marks disappear when recording starts.

Thanks,
Nathan
