Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon EOS M3
November 07, 2015, 06:10:19 AM
You can't shoot in manual on the M3?  Is that right?  That seems so strange since you can shoot in manual on the M1.  In any case, I'm sticking with the M1 unless ML is somehow made to work on the M3.  Very unlikely.  The EOS-M is a really nice little camera with ML.  I would love better video quality and I've heard that the M3 is slightly better, but ML is the key to making it useable for video in my opinion.

I would not expect that you are actually getting a clean HDMI out that can be recorded.  Even though you may not see overlays, it is likely that the HDMI signal is actually compressed and full of artifacts.

It doesn't look to me like the M3 is a huge step up from the M1, and I love the M1.  If they had put the 7d2 sensor in the M3, I would order one at full price and have it shipped to the US even without ML available.  As it is, I think an M1 with ML is a much better option.  I primarily use the M1 for easy photos on the go, time lapse, and plant cams for events.

I bemoan the apparent dying of the magic lantern project, but I completely understand it.  I check these forums to see if anything new has happened, but all I ever see are the same questions and ignorant requests.  I don't personally have the talent or knowledge to code and I certainly don't have the patience to deal with questions from people who can't first take the time to understand their tools.  I feel bad that I've never contributed more than money to the project, but I am very grateful for what has been given me and it's ability to help me be a "filmmaker".

Now that I've said that, if you want to use manual lenses you need to set the camera in the menu to release the shutter without a lens attached.  This is not an ML issue.

Regarding magic zoom, it took me awhile to figure out how to use it with EF-M lenses while maintaining manual focus.  The best way to do it is to go into the M's Config menu and reassign the focus to the * button on the dial so that it no longer focuses when you half press the shutter button.  Also, set the focus mode to AF/MF and set magic zoom to appear when focusing or half pressing the shutter.  Now you can set the focus box by tapping the screen and then when you turn the focus ring or half press the shutter button, the magic zoom box will appear to aid in focusing.

Right now, ML allows you to turn off the display after 5 seconds of not being used.  If a picture is taken or a setting changed, though, the display pops back up for five seconds.  It might be possible to add a method to turn off the display entirely, but I didn't see it.

I've been wondering and have been meaning to test it out, but it I haven't had the bug show up in awhile.  Has anybody tried changing the camera menu to allow shutter release without a lens attached to see if it fixes the issue?

I would pay good money if somebody could code a way to reposition the magic zoom window while shooting on the M either through the touch screen or the keys.

Regarding my problems with the DAT file, I couldn't retrieve the files.  I didn't have the patience to track down the problem.  I just loaded a new version of ML and did a couple of tests to make sure I was no longer getting the problem.  I've actually sold the 6D, now.  I continue to us ML on the EOS M even though it sometimes feels like I'm playing around with an OS that is overrun with computer viruses.  It's nothing like the good old days of ML 2.3 on my 60D.

The creation of a DAT file instead of a .mov file happened to me on a 6D using tragic lantern last year.  I figured it might have something to do with the automatic restart function of ML and continuous file creation in the newer Canon cameras.  I changed a couple of settings and no longer had a problem with the 6D.  I've never had problems with the EOS-M.  In any case, I've never really trusted the 4GB threshold automatic file creation on the Canon cameras with ML installed since then.

Wynand: I have never tried bumping up the bitrate on the EOS-M, but my understanding based on other people's tests is that increasing the bitrate does very little for image quality on Canon DSLR's.  It might help with certain grades and fast movement, but I have rarely heard of people seeing a difference.

I just tested it on one of the older builds that is currently in my camera.  The turn off LCD feature works fine.  Perhaps scottfrey was looking at the wrong menu or never engaged the command.

I also want to thank !% for all of the work he did.  I have both a 6D and an EOSM along with a 60D and a C100.  Without ML/TL, I find the Canon DSLR's to be nearly useless for video work.  I absolutely love using ML and on my 60D and can't thank a1ex and the rest of the early team enough.  I consider it a reliable B-Cam for my C100.  Sometimes, though, the 6D or EOSM fit my needs more due to size or lowlight, and I wouldn't want to use those at all without the work that 1% put in.  Thank you.

Also, I'm glad that this change to support for TL/ML is being made as I hope it will ultimately lead to more stable builds for all of the current Canons.  For those of us who are either new to ML and looking for reliable video camera and intervalometer features, or who use DSLR's on paying gigs, anything that improves stability and consistency is greatly appreciated.  Again, thank you to the entire team for basically creating a fully featured video and photo camera out of a consumer oriented camera.

I have been having the same problem with the EOS-M ML builds.  I've used multiple builds and they all have the same problem.  Try to turn it on and I get a blinking LED or solid LED and the screen never turns on and the power button will not turn it off.  If I pull the battery and try to cycle it a few more times, at some point it will finally power up completely.  I am using a 64GB card with nothing else on it.  I do not load more than the very basic modules.

I can't seem to unzip the four most recent downloads from: https://bitbucket.org/OtherOnePercent/tragic-lantern-6d/downloads  The earlier downloads from October and earlier work fine for me.  I'm working on a Mac.  Is this my problem or a problem with the downloads?

Archived porting threads / Magic Lantern for 6D?
January 13, 2014, 10:39:45 PM
Any chance that there will be a port of Magic Lantern for the 6D?  All I am hoping for is the same functionality as in ML 2.3.  Tragic Lantern is very buggy for me so it would be great to have a semi stable build with basic features.

I had a problem with the 6D not completing mov files and just leaving .DAT without information when shooting over the 4GB file size.  Is this what you are talking about?  I actually decided that it might have something to do with having autorestart enabled or some other conflicting menu item enabled that hindered the 6D from completing the file.

I saw it once on my 18-55 but not on the 22 or the 11-22.  Of course, that doesn't prove that it doesn't happen.

My primary hope is that there is a way to implement magic zoom with touch screen on this camera.  Is that a possibility?

I am so so glad to hear that somebody is trying to get a stable version of ML EOS-M up.  I am one of those people who chose Canon's because of Magic Lantern and things like magic zoom, peaking, false color, and zebras.  These are the things that are built into normal video cameras and help to make a Canon DSLR a viable choice for videography.  Thank you.

Correction: since there's no ML for EOS M, there can't be any ML bugs ;)

This is unfortunate and depressing.  Magic Lantern is the reason I am still using Canons.  I've used early versions on my 60D and payed on the early release of ML 2.3, which is a wonderful piece of software.  I am now using TL on my 6D and EOSM, both of which don't seem to have a proper ML release.  And, based on experience, I don't trust TL.  I will usually swap in an unmodified card if I know I need to depend on the footage.  I wish I could code as I would be willing to help out on getting ML for both of these cameras.  I would donate more money if I thought it would help.  Even though I've been following these threads I am still not sure what happened here, but I would be extremely grateful if there was support for ML on these cameras.

As a C100 owner, I can say that I don't really miss not having Magic Lantern on it.  It's firmware already covers most of the issues that Magic Lantern fixes for DSLR's trying to shoot video.  I am far more interested in having a fully tested and stable release for my 6D and EOS-M, irregardless of the hype around RAW video.  I feel completely at a loss when trying to shoot with a DSLR without Magic Lantern and I don't know how 1D-C and 1D-X users manage.  The only reason I shoot with Canon at this point is due to Magic Lantern and I will never understand why Canon ever made vague threats against the ML team.

Regarding my consecutive files bug: it is intermittent.  It probably has something to do with my settings in ML of the way it is accessing the SD card.  If I track it down, I will post the fix.  But, right now, I wouldn't trust ML on the 6D for covering events as the file doesn't appear to be recoverable.

First, thanks to the whole team for Magic Lantern.  Fantastic.

Second, since installing ML on my 6D, I'm having problems with the camera not saving automatically created files on recordings that are longer than the maximum 4GB file size.  Instead, the automatically created consecutive files are sometimes just .DAT files that read as having zero bytes.  I am guessing that this is due to Magic Lantern since I don't seem to have the problem when it isn't running.  I lose the entire recording, but the camera never registers the problem.  I am using 64GB Sandisk Extreme cards.
