So for an assignment for my music video production class, I had to plan, shoot, and edit a video in 2 weeks for any song. I decided to try out RAW video for this. This was my first time making a real video in RAW and I love how the quality came out. Hope you guys enjoy!

And if someone could tell me how to make it so it actually shows the video and not the link, that'd be great. Sorry, just new to forums

So I've been messing around a lot and doing a lot of research on RAW Video shooting and I finally figured out a workflow that I like. I decided to go out to this park near my house and shoot around. Everything is handheld and too shaky so sorry about that. I can't wait to shoot an actual project on RAW.

This programm creates dng files directly from spanned files. So, you don't need to 'cat' them first!

I don't have anything to test with right now since I'm not at home, but do I just drag the .RAW and .R00 file into the program or just the .RAW file? I actually use RAWMagic, I just had no idea it was capable of doing that.

Really the only issues I had were user error. As I was shooting a ton of footage over 4 days (10 hours of content) I ran into space issues a couple times. Once that meant I forgot to clear the card before shooting and had to manually delete each file from the previous shoot. Another it meant I had to put down the 5Dmk3 as it was full and just shoot with the 6D. And I was on the crappy Komputerbay 128gb so it wasn't the most reliable but it never was a problem. The only thing I would have done different is shooting on the Zeiss primes more as the 24-105L can give an almost too crisp look. It works well with the IS for the driving shots and the zoom is obviously convenient but the Zeiss has such a creamier rich look. There is always next time.
And teryoon I highly recommend going RAW especially if it's just a short. Make sure you have the drive space for the processing but aside from that and the extra work involved it's totally worth it. I'm shooting the teaser for my indie feature next month and am planning on going all RAW as a test. If the data and syncing scares me off I may shoot on a combo of the C100 and the 5DmkIII RAW.

That's actually great to hear. I still have around 2 months of planning before the actual shoot so I've just been testing workflows and CF cards and what not, making everything is stable and that I can figure out solutions to any problems I might have. But this definitely gives me more confidence going into shooting, thanks!

Really impressive. This is giving me some more confidence to shoot this short film I'm planning in RAW. Did you experience any sort of hiccups during your shooting or did it all go relatively smoothly?

It's easy.

• Open Terminal
• Write "cat"
• Drag'n'drop the first Mxx-xxxx.RAW file onto Terminal
• Drag'n'drop the next Mxx-xxxx.R00 file onto Terminal
• Add all the other Mxx-xxxx.Rxx files into Terminal like above
• Proceed to write ">"
• Then write the destination file (I usually just drag'n'drop the first file ending in RAW and renaming it)
• Push Enter and let the magic begin

cat /Volumes/Scratch\ Disk/RAW/M29-0830.RAW /Volumes/Scratch\ Disk/RAW/M29-0830.R00 > /Volumes/Scratch\ Disk/RAW/M29-FINI.RAW

That's the only thing I've been able to find with how to deal with that on a Mac. Everything else I see is for Windows. Is this actually the best/only thing I can do?

EDIT: I tried the cat command the person mentioned in the comments so I guess that's a better way to do all of this.

So I've decided that I'm going to take a bit of a risk for me and shoot a short film entirely in RAW with my 5Dmarkii. I'm shooting in around 2 months, so I'm just trying to make sure I learn as much as I can before doing this.

So before when I would just record on my 5D, I would render things out in Prores 422 for when I needed lossless files. Now that I'm working with RAW, should I change that? I'm thinking of rendering things out as Prores 4444 instead. Would that be a better idea? I know the file size is larger so it means less compression, but is it worth it do you think?

Also, I see that everything says 14-bit RAW Video. This has to do a bit with my current workflow. So right now, I'm converting the RAW files to DNG's > opening in After Effects and using ACR in AE > Rendering out the clips as Prores files. The question is, in After Effects, should I be working in 8-bit? Should I go ahead and change that to 16-bit/will that make any sort of noticeable difference?

Thanks for any help you guys. This film is going to be premiered at the end of the year at my school on a big screen so I want the quality to be the best that it possibly can be. I know I'm just being super anal with all of these details, but I might as well know.

Hey guys, I didn't know where else to ask this so I thought I would just make a thread here. Please move this or delete if I should post this somewhere else.

So this is how my workflow works right now. I put the RAW files into raw2dng, then open the dng sequences in After Effects. I get to this point.



Is there any way to see the other frames in the sequence and not just the first one? The reason being, there are times when I can't tell how to make adjustments for the clip just based on the first frame. I remember seeing a tutorial once and a person opens ACR in Photoshop and they're able to see the other frames on the left side, but I tried clicking around and looking for something like that in AE, but I can't find it. How do you guys tend to do it? Thanks for the help.
