Messages - anDyIII

Hi guys, I'm back.
after many years of shooting any kind of project with MLV on myy 5DIII, I added to my set other brends cameras and now I added the the R5.

I see you guys are altready working on this model. You're awesome!

Since this camera is already quite complete out of the box (IMO), I think a lighter and non invasive version of ML would suite this camera perfectly, with just the most needed features in favour of stability.

If I'd have to suggest something to help, my priorities would be:
- 30 mins recording time limit removal (maybe only on lower resolutions or via HDMI to preserve the camera from overheatng?)
- Canon Raw recording through USB port for USB SSDs (Jus a routing from CFexpress to USb or even a dual recording). I know this camera has a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 GBit/sec) and Canon states the minimum CFexpress specs, even for 8K raw, are CFexpress 1.0 [400MB/sec. or higher] so on paper the USB controller could handle it.
- A way to record 4K 120fps in raw, even for a limited time. I think this could not be done with the same raw format from Canon, right?

In case you need it I'm available for testing.

Thanks.

lol. Thanks The_bald_guy!
No stripes, just a lot of noise that didn't behave so well when I had to teak blacks in Premiere Pro.

Hello guys, this is my last work for the 2012/2013 italian Hill Climb champion.
Shot with my 5D Mark III using an experimental 4K raw video recording build. Everything is shot with 14bit lossless raw at 50fps.
MLV files transcoded into DNGs using MLV App v0.12 alpha, edited and graded in Premiere Pro. Both because I had no time for a Redolve roundtrip and I wanted to try Premiere color tool capabilities on these lossless files.
Cheers.  :)

I have to report a bug.
On the 5D Mk III 1.1.3 with the latest 4K raw video recording build from October 28, if crop mode 1920 50/60 is set together with 1920 25 ALL-I video mode, FPS override menu works.
But if you set that crop mode together with 1280 50 ALL-I video mode, as soon as you enter the FPS override menu, the camera freezes and you have to remove the battey.
I can replicate this issue as many times as I want.

I'm testing 10 and 12bit raw on my 5D Mark III, but why do I have MLV files if I use raw 1.0 to record?
Is it possible to add Status when recording to raw 1.0 to control in a better way how the recording is going?
Thanks.

@Greg

Thanks.

I updated my post right now with another solution I thought that could also clean up the cameras list.

Hi folks,
I tested the new builds page a bit and it looks good! Great work!
I just have a few things to suggest for a better readability.

1st. It would be nice to group the changeset list and make it like the Older builds one. So you can click on "changes", or whatever you want, and show the list and then hide it.
2nd. Could you set the the fw version under the camera model a little bit bigger? My eyes are still good but I had to read it two times to choose the right version.  :D
Another possible solution for this, that would also shorten the list, would be: Write the camera model as simple text and write one or more firmware versions as links on its right or below it.
For example:

5D Mark III  1.1.3  1.2.3

5D Mark III
1.1.3 1.2.3

Keep up the good work guys!

Hi guys,

Thanks for your appreciation. With "Arri look" I not meen a blockbuster teal and orange grade, but a slightly greenish and warm grade with warm and not too magenta skintones and also a wide dinamic range.
This is what I see in a lot of professional grades made on arri footage.

I didn't use any color LUT, just converted the footage to BMD Film and I started from there. I have to say that the ligh and the forniture color you see helped me a lot to achieve that look.
I also added a bit of grain in resolve using its new grain FX.

Oh, looking at the trailer you should also be able to understand which clip has been shot with the 24-105 and which one with the 55 f1.2.

Hi guys,
This is a short film I shot a year ago with my 5D. Actually it was not born as a short film, but I just shot something handheld thinking to make a really short video and maybe use it in a blog article, but when I watched all the footage I thought I should do something bigger and share it.

The full film is available on Vimeo On Demand: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/thecameracollector
And this is the article I made on my team's blog: http://www.brancoottico.fineartlabo.com/blog/the-camera-collector/

Shot on 5D Mark III firmware 1.2.3 with RAW 1.0 2.35:1
Lenses: Canon 24-105 and vintage Nikkor 55mm f/1.2

Workflow:
1. RAW to CDNG conversion with raw2cdng.
2. DaVinci Resolve 12 (BMD Film + proxies + roundtrip).
3. Editing with Premiere Pro CC 2015.
4. Back to DaVinci Resolve for Color Correction and Grading.
5. Single file exported from Resolve and imported into Premiere for final audio mix.

I tried to give an "Arri look" to the footage.

normally replacing the module on the card should be enough, in this case im not sure if the build from august 2014 would be the best, perhaps the build from 2015 would be a better base.

Sorry, I forgot to say how to use it. Just use the latest build from 2015 and replace the mlv_rec module with the one I compiled. No need to reinstall ML.

QuoteI also submitted a pull request with the pink frames fix for 1.2.3 last night, and now I'm still testing the fix from a personally compiled build for 1.2.3.

A month ago I fixed and compiled the mlv_rec module for 1.2.3 fw. Here is the the fixed module that has been tested by me and other users from the Magic Lantern Italia facebook user group.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/6pn6ddj6s01b9wk/mlv_rec+5D3-123+pink+frames+fix+applied+by+Casanova.zip

It works like a charm.

The pull request I opened on bitbucket is still there and needs approval by main devs.

@squig

Thanks, but maybe I can't explain myself.
I don't have any pink frames, just highlight clipping in some cases, which is a different thing.
And I can't output anamorphic desqueeze through hdmi, even with Force HDMI-VGA as a1ex suggested in another thread. Another user has the same problem.

Btw, I also submitted a pull request with the pink frames fix for 1.2.3 last night, and now I'm still testing the fix from a personally compiled build for 1.2.3.

General Help Q&A / Re: Anamorphic desqueeze

Exactly the same here.

I posted some information in this thread.

I know that those features are available only on 1.2.3 and that's what I said.
I'm just saying that I can't ouput anamorphic desqueeze together with global draw on both 1.1.3 and 1.2.3.

I don't have pink frames anymore with 1.1.3, just highlight clipping depending on MLV viewer/converter.

@budafilms

I'm fine, thanks.
1.2.3 fw just gives you mirroring and clean out, but global draw works exactly like on 1.1.3 with my lilliput monitor. Today I had some spare time to test this out.
It seems like anamorphic desqueeze doesn't work at the same level of global draw and so it won't be output through hdmi.

Here are two images showing how camera and lilliput monitors disply with 1.2.3 version of ML. Desqueeze is applied in camera.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ex09qil61j2kv37/Camera%20Monitor%20with%20desqueeze.jpg?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ugt9a9l56er99gt/Lilliput%20monitor%20global%20draw.jpg?dl=0

Is there any way to make desqueeze visible through hdmi on both 1.1.3 and 1.2.3?
#16
Thanks squig, I also checked a bunch of frames quith Photoshop and they look ok, but I think this is because it reads them differently from Resolve and other tools.
Now we should understand if the issue comes from 1.1.3 builds or from the way all converting and grading tools read highlight information in those frames.
#17
Hi guys, I'm back again.
Some weeks ago I downgraded from 1.2.3 to 1.1.3 to have the fix for pink frames. (Btw, italian users on ML Italia user group on facebook keep asking for the fix for 1.2.3 version. @a1ex, since 1.2.3 version is not updated since last year, is there any chance to see a new nightly in a short time?)

Now I wanna talk about two issues I've found using 1.1.3 16 May nightly.

1st. Highlight clipping as you can read in this thread. I posted there more info.
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=16401.0

2nd. With 1.1.3 fw I can't see desqueezing on an external lilliput monitor. Is it normal for 1.1.3 or not? I'd like to know if it should work on 1.2.3 version before I upgrade all to try out.

Thanks

I'll try with older versions of raw2cdng, even if i like the latest changes and fixes.

Anyway, if someone wants to investigate further here is a frame with the clipping issue converted with raw2cdng 1.7.5.

Similar issue here found today in some footage shot with 5D mark III and 1.1.3 build from 16 May.

Highlight clipping is visible in MLRawViewer but also in CDNGs coming from the latest version of raw2cdng.

I worked with U-Reach EU for a few weeks trying to build what we need, but from tests it came out that the adapter only works in True IDE mode with a maximum speed of 45 MB/s.
I tried to develop something together with them, but they said they are not able such kind of converter, so now I'm trying to create on my own with an italian startup.
A full aluminium CFast to SSD converter is on its way, too.
Stay tuned.

New Ideas and considerations are welcome  ;)
#22
We already know what project, and I'm working with that guy together with another company on the CF version.
I'm planning to do a modular version, so C-Box and CFast or CF converter to connect via SATA cable.
#23
By the way... The CFast adapter with light-blue cable that the guy used for his project looks like this one ( http://www.microsatacables.com/cfast-breakout-cable ) without the power cable.
It looks like he bridged a few pins inside the adapter ore something similar, so that the camera can recognize it as a real CFast and send the data via sata cable.
As kitor said, the project is not something extraordinary, just a box to power the SSDs.
