Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 50D

Hi guys, could anyone tell if it is possible to change the video resolution in standard ML (H.264) video recording on 50D?
Or confirm that is is fixed to 1920x1080 or 640x480? (these are the only options I find available in the menu)
I would like to use different high res aspect ratio like (1920x1200 or 1600x1200 etc ) 16:10 or 4:3 \ 3:2 if that is possible, think even 1280x800 would do.
That would really help before I got a fast CF card to use RAW .))
Thanks!

Hello guys!

I have a question about cards, currently I use a kingston ultimate 16 gb 600x, which gives me about 22mb/s write speed, therefore i can only record about 80-100 frames in 1880x710 which is to be honest not a lot, so I'm looking for a new card to buy.
Sadly I live in hungary so I have access to Lexar 1000x cards which would the perfect choise, and even the smaller ones cost 2-3x price of the USD price (the 16 gb 600x ones cost about 300$).
I'm currently looking at the sandisk 16 gb extreme pro 90mb/s which I have seen a lot of you are using and the silicon power 1000x 16 gb, which I have no benchmarks but in theory it's udma 7 with 150mb/s.
Which would be the better choise, or what could i get in the same price range?
Thanks

I would suggest looking at 32Gb cards, as most 16Gbs tends to be slower.
I'm also thinking about getting fast CF right now and best bets seem to be Transcend 1000x 32Gb or Komputerbay 1000x 64Gb (btw both are available on eBay)

Though the 5D2 can't reach those numbers, this benchmark is still lower than what it's capable of. The highest values I've seen so far were in the high 60s, almost 70 MB/s. Heck, with this new build, my 600x Sandisk card can record at a stable 59.5+ MB/s. Even though it's just below the speed required, I can finally do 1880x800 continuously at least until my 16GB card fills up (love the huge buffer we have :) )

Hm, I was not entirely following the 5D markII thread, what exactly is causing the write speed drop while using LV?

Just thought if LV mode is limiting the write speeds, maybe it will be also worth making a RAW video mode not involving the LV at all, for videos with static camera position that could mean a higher res possibilities.

Transcend 1000x 32 Gb card on my 5DmkII

Can this be right? Transcend should be capable of around 100Mb/s? Has the card been through low level format using the Transcend format programm? I heard it may rise the write speed.

16Gb version indeed will be slower, 32Gb is faster.
I aslo read a review from a guy who said that Transcend cards write speed increases after low level format using branded utility from their site.

Yeah for the price Komputerbay 64Gb seems to be the way to go, the only thing is that they can differ in speed a bit from card to card.
I wonder if Transcend 32Gb 1000x (priced about 120$ now) will be able to perform better, and reach the advertised 120Mb/s write speed.
Anyone seen any benches of it on 5D markII or 50d?

Guy's what card is advisable to use with the 50D? is the 90mb/s cards good enough?
That is the question that I'm about at the moment too, so from my thoughts, the fastest CF will be the better, it is only Toshiba 1066x that will be an overkill, as the 50D controller tops near 133Mb/s, so we can speak of around 120Mb/s real world write speed capability, as a result most of current high speed cards should perform near their max. specs.
By the way what 90Mb/s cards exactly were you refering to? By that speed you meant write or read speed? As 90Mb/s read speed cards are usually top at write ~50-60Mb/s only.

Just thought if LV mode is limiting the write speeds, maybe it will be also worth making a RAW video mode not involving the LV at all, for videos with static camera postion that could mean a higher res possibilities.

Yeah, thanks, but the thing is menoc's bench is made in playback mode, not LV. Although it is nice to know that the controller is able to go pretty far, I assume with faster cards it should be able to do around 120Mb\s in fact. Just thought if LV is limiting the write speeds so much, maybe it will be also worth making a RAW video mode not involving the LV at all, for videos with static camera postion that could mean a higher res possibilities.

Just got the 50D and having thoughts on the faster CF cards again, I saw a post here some time ago saying:
"The Canon EOS 50D seems to have a maximal write speed of ~ 70 Megabyte/s."
Is that really true and getting a faster card won't give any results and there is no sense trying? I was not entirely following the 5D markII thread, what exactly is causing the write speed drop while using LV?
Think the 50D and 5DmkII CF controller speeds should be pretty much the same with theoretical peak at 133Mb/s - UDMA6 max specs, so is there a chance for 50d to have desirable 100-120Mb\s write speeds in real world situation with fastest 1000x CF cards like Transcend (~120Mb/s) or it will be still capped under 70Mb/s?

Toshiba 1066x claims to have 150Mb\s write speed, Transcend 1000x also might be worth checking as it should be capable of ~120Mb/s

Anyone tried Transcend 1000x card? They got to be pretty stable quality and capable of up to 120Mb/s write speed.

We need to make sure and have a 60D thread when it's time. I am under the impression that the 60D will have the same power and bottlenecks as the 600D. Isn't this correct? Many people bought the 60D for the video at the time as it had the nicer build quality than the 550D and the articulating screen.

It seems like 60D as well as the 550D\600D will be maxed out near ~1280x400, while 650D is already reported to work fine at 1280x540.
I really hope the great ML developer team will make 50D the best entry level highres RAW video DSLR soon.))

According to A1ex the CPU doesn't matter. He said that the "secret ingredient" for RAW video is zero CPU usage ;)
It's all about write speed. And I think the 50D will win this contest.
That is good to hear, then lets wait for the 50D update, as it might become a great entry level APS-C RAW HD video alternative to 5D mkII

It's now like 650D vs 50D for the basic RAW HD video DSLR camera - faster CF (133Mb/s) and larger buffer size may outweigh the CPU difference, also I've read somewhere here that 650D controller tops near the 40Mb\s - that will limit maxres under 720p.

5D mark II will hopefully settle at stable 24/1080p so we could conclude that DIGIC 4 is enough for RAW HD video = good news for 50D.))
