Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!
May 26, 2013, 07:40:37 AM
Here's a brief test of the DNG video.  Shot in 1720x720. 2.39:1 aspect ratio.  I shot in JPEG photo mode, no RAW.  I got about 7 seconds of recording time.   I used a Sandisk Extreme 32 GB (45MB/s) card.  Exported in 1920x1080, small hit in resolution.

I see moire and aliasing and I missed focus here and there.  I did not color correct anything in the image at all, that's why most of it is underexposed and looks crappy.

I did a straight conversion from .RAW to DNG to ProResHQ, edit and export in h264.

There's an immediate improvement in the detail over H264.  I didn't shoot comparisons.  I might later on, but for now, it's definitely an increase in detail.  Also, that increase in bit depth is nice, too.

When I have some free time, I'll post sample DNGs if anyone wants to download them.

UPDATE:

I use a transcend 32 gb Class 10 card.

I got 1920x640 for 185 frames, 1280x640 @ 375 frames and those imported without a problem. Videos play fine and the 1280x640 looks pretty good scaled up to 1920x1080.

I do have problems with other resolutions.
When I shoot at Resolution  : 1734 x 726 I can get 173 frames.  The problem comes after converting to the DNG using the osx version of RAW2DNG.  I can't import them in any of my Camera Raw programs (After Effects, Lightroom, Bridge) they all say "the file format module could not parse the file. (45 :: 35)"

Do I need to use the most updated version of raw2dng?  I have an older version of it from a few weeks ago.

All of mine have been 23.976.

There's a post over on another forum which now has raw_rec enabled for the 60D.  Again, try at your own risk but Marekk has enabled it and it's working on mine.

I've got it to work!!!

I'll be shooting some tests but so far I've been getting 300+ frames on 720p. I'm going to convert and post them soon.

GREAT WORK MAREKK!!!!

I'm getting:
Global draw off, JPEG quality, movie rec mode.  I got my 60D in November 2011.

1080p
69 frames @ 1734x1156
(5X Zoom) 52 frames @ 2520x1080

720P
112 frames @ 1734x694
(5X Zoom) 52 frames @ 2520x1080

Any word on the raw_rec ability for the 60D?  I tried running an autoexec.bin Marekk uploaded a little while ago but it didn't seem to work.

Didn't work for me.

A number of others (including me) have asked in the different threads and it seems like that's not available yet.  I'd love to test it out, too.

I think it's probably something that will eventually come down the road but I think a lot of work is going into testing and making the current builds for the 4 cameras (5D2&3, T3i, 6D) more stable.  I hope one of the devs will respond to this thread though, but I'm assuming the answer will be that the builds will come sometime...

Olik,

I did exactly those tests on the 5DMk2, it was quick but I've uploaded it to my site.  I also did a test to see what I could get from the shadows and highlights compared to h264.

Scaling Test

Dynamic Range - DNG vs H264 Test

With the risk that this has already been discussed; is there a way to shoot 1280x720 without the crop factor (from the 1920x1080 resolution) on 5dmk2?
I would also be very interested what gives me more sharpness, 1920x1080 h264 or 1280x720 raw.

thanks
O.

There's a thread currently that states those Komputerbay 1000X cards will work.

THIS IS TRULY REMARKABLE, I KNOW YOU HEAR THIS ALL THE TIME, BUT INCREDIBLE WORK!

Does anyone have any experience with komputerbay cards? They have a few 1000x cards that are a little cheaper than the other cards.

I remember reading somewhere that 64gb files are better for speed as apposed the 128gb cards? Am I making this up? What cards do you recommend getting?

Hey guys, here's my attempt at the raw DNG test.

I compared the internal H264 to the DNGs.  Obviously there's a difference but I wanted to see for myself.

The buffer was 41 frames, I used a Transcend 400X 32 GB card.
