General Help Q&A / Headphone monitoring for 6D?
October 30, 2018, 08:24:02 AM
Hi,

I'm trying to monitor my live audio recordings via the camera-USB with an A/V cable & headphones. Playback sound works. But when I plug in the USB cable while in recording mode the camera display goes dark, no sound coming through. Is that regular 6D camera behaviour? Or am I missing a setting?

I found something about a 'Tragic Lantern' branch, that seemed to have been doing the job. Has this part of the code been lost?
Also I found this: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/random-geekery-adding-headphone-monitoring-canon-6d-firmware-tempey

I'm not a coder. Any way this could be (or already is?) implemented into the actual MagicLantern?

Thanks very much - Jan

Slice control really is brilliant. With:

Min BR: 130
Max BR: 160
Drop 1: 140
Drop 3: 145
Taper Rates: Enabled

PicPC: 0

I never get in trouble.

please help me understand:
is this something that works for Canon 6D, too? where would I find these settings?

thanks - jan

I'll check on gops.. I have to rewrite this for 50D... 50/60FPS vs 24 or 30 is why the data rate is so high.

trial and error:
- i found that as settings for GOP size: 24, 12, 6 and 3 are working, for 1920p25 IPB (other GOP sizes do not record at all)
- but the GOP size doesn't seem to affect the file size / bitrate (/quality?) at all

and still wondering: data rate for 1920*1080, 25fps and 1280*720, 50fps should be about the same; yet, using the RateControl mode produces very different data rates for these modes...

sorry to bother, i know you're very busy working on the raw option, but for the time being it would be just great to have some .h264 settings that work safely (with options that i can get my head around  ??? ). thanks again - jan

i just tested diefferent GOP sizes:

- 2 and 4 and 25 and 50 - they all don't work at all - in the upper right corner, A and B and the % stay at zero, after 10secs the camera restarts...
- only GOP size 24 frames seems to work.

i don't understand why; and i also don't understand the big difference in bit rate when using the 1920p25 or the 1280p50 resolution:

- 1920p25 gives approx. 60Mbit/sec
- 1280p50 gives apporox 105Mbit/sec (which is a lot of data, and takes lots more time to convert to DNxHD...)

any idea? thanks! jan

Max gop is FPS so for 25 P its 25.. 50p its 50, etc.

strange:
- it's only working with GOP size exactly 24  (both at 1920p25 and 1280p50 IPB)
- not working with GOP 25 or 4 or... it just doesn't record, and does a restart after 10secs...

anymore insight in these settings?

I was discussing this with 1% before, try this:

1080p IPB

- Bit Rate OFF
- InitQP OFF
- Flush Rate (auto ... for sound of 4 if you don't need a sound)
- GOP size 24
- Autoload conf: override
- Config select: Rate Control

It should give very stable IPB with 60-70 mbps bitrate which theoretically should look better than 60-70 ALL-I. :-X

thanks very much, kgv5!!!

looks like it's working well for 1920/25fps IPB, gives me ca. 61Mbit/sec, which is a good number for me to handle...
just wondering:

- is the GOP size 24 the same choice for 24fps or 25fps?
- what would be the respective settings for 1280p50 IPB? (for now, a test with the above setting gives me about 106Mbit/sec, which would still be fine for my SanDisk ExPro card i guess)

thanks - jan

rc.ini ,etc are for H264.. you can turn autoload off or leave it on, won't make a difference until you record H264

hi, can somebody explain in a little more detail how the encoder options 'off/h264.ini / CBR fixed QP / VBR / Rate Control' relate to the settings IPB / ALL-I in the canon menu? just in case one doesn't want to do raw recording (yet), but 'classic' 1920 or 1280 video on a fast card, what's a good setting to start with?

i seem to get confused by the new encoder menu, since the options are different from the ones described in the user manual. thanks so much!! jan

what's a good (and safe!) setting / combination for shooting .h264 with approx. 80-160Mbit/sec? in my ML encoder menu, the options are:

- Bit Rate (0... 15 or more)
- InitQP (off ... 50)
- Flush Rate (auto ... 4frames... 50frames)
- GOP size (default ... 100frames)
- Autoload conf (off / on / override)
- Config select (off/h264.ini  /  CBR fixed QP   /   VBR   / Rate Control)

i can't find an explanation for these particular options anywhere???... thanks so much -

jan

p.s. i have ML from June 2013, a 6D and SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB

p.p.s and how do these settings relate to the canon in-camera settings ALL-I and IPB? which overrides which? (if there's an explanation already somewhere, please hit me upon it! thx...)

hi there,

i have been looking for instructions about setting the .h264 encoder on latest ML / 6D. unfortunately, the 'user guide' seems to refer to some older version / menu items.

could somebody tell a noob like me, what's a good (and safe!) setting / combination for shooting .h264 with approx. 80-100Mbit/sec? in 'my' encoder menu, the possibilities are:

- Bit Rate (0... 15 or more)
- InitQP (off ... 50)
- Flush Rate (auto ... 4frames... 50frames)
- GOP size (default ... 100frames)
- Autoload conf (off / on / override)
- Config select (off/h264.ini  /  CBR fixed QP   /   VBR   / Rate Control)

i don't understand how these items combine, and i can't find an explanation anywhere... thanks so much -

hi there,

and thanks a lot for the install guide, worked fine for me!

now i do understand that everybody is working hard on getting the 'raw' thing going. however, i will do some 'regular' .h264 shooting for a job soon. i woud love to use ML for the other features, but i'm a bit anxious if i will get the encoding settings right (never quite got the Bitrate / InitQP / ConfigSelect thing).

i have a 6D with SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB (95MB/s)

can anyone give me simple advise, what would be a 'safe' setup (or should i even revert to the canon default 'all-i'?) 'safe' is more important for me now than to squeeze the last bit of information out of the frame...

thanks! jan

p.s.: i get a little confused by the wording in the 'user guide', since it doesn't exactly seem to match the latest ML encoding menu...

Tragic Lantern / Re: Tragic Lantern for 6D
June 07, 2013, 09:44:51 AM
hi,

i have a simple question: i'm using ML on my 6D mainly for things like magic zoom, zebra etc. so i am generally fine with the 'classic' 1920 or 1280 video recording settings.

now i noticed that with ML 'on' (no modules loaded, no raw recording), the data rates of the clips recorded are very different from when i shoot with ML 'off' -> esp. the 'IPB' doesn't seem to work / compress anymore, the files are just about as big as with 'ALL-I'.

is that a regular behaviour? is that because i'm using the developer kit (version from june 1st)? thanks a lot!

Tragic Lantern / Re: Tragic Lantern for 6D

hi,

and thanks a lot for the work so far!!! i have one short question:
- will it be possible with the 6d ML to customize the 'magnifying button' function in live-view, as it is in ML for 5d2? precisely, change it so you press ONE time and it magnifies (5x OR 10x) and one more time for it to go back to 'normal'?? (because by now they changed it to be pressed 4x to get back to 'normal' again, and that's a real pain when you work with manual focus)

thanks from berlin!!, and looking forward -

jan
