I thought there already was a sound level indicator on the 650D?

It does but for some silly reason you can only access it and adjust the levels from the menu while not shooting.  So you can go to the menu, see your levels, then exit and start shooting, but you can't monitor live while shooting.

I'm up here in Ontario, Canada taking 'Television Broadcasting' at my college.  While the school packs some expensive Sony ENG type cameras, for getting the film look they have little more than some 60Ds.  I own a T2i/550D with ML on it and I use it as my main camera for class projects.  For one of our final projects, we ran around campus to borrow materials from a bunch of other programs, namely the Paramedic, Police and Nursing programs so we could film a cop show on campus.  Someone from the local police service even hung out with us while we filmed and supplied us with airsoft guns to use as props.  We put the ML logo and gave things to the dev team in the ending credits to show appreciation for putting zebras, focus peaks, increased bitrate and a waveform monitor on our little Rebel camera. :)

6D video quality is kinda meh.

I have need for the ISO performance it offers and the 5D is rather costly.  I'm shooting a short film, police procedural, on a T2i running ML (Have a T4i waiting for ML as well) and for much of the shooting it's fine, but in a few locations we couldn't control the light enough and we wanted a wider depth of field.  We were left using a shallower depth of field because we needed a wider aperture to deal with the fact that the T2i gets pretty noisy and loses dynamic range above ISO 800.  The scene is lackluster as a result cause we're chasing focus while characters walk and talk down a hall.

That said, this is also why I have my eyes on what the 70D or 7D Mk 2 could offer.

Quote from: 1% on March 21, 2013, 03:59:07 PMOh and that review says 700D has mjpeg.

I find it odd that no one else has mentioned MJPEG other than DPReview, you'd think Canon would have put it in the press release?  'MJpeg for even better video recording!' that seems like a nice marketing line.

Mjpeg would be nice, but I'm not about to get a T5i for it.  I have a T2i and a T4i, a T5i would be an incremental upgrade, my going plan is to save up and get something like a Canon 6D around Black Friday.  Maybe a 7D Mk 2 if it comes out and is attractive.

With all these Canon cameras constantly coming out, do you ML devs ever find yourselves going 'TOO MANY CAMERAS! D:'?

I have a T2i and a T4i, I've actually fallen back to using my T2i due to it's Magic Lantern support.  We were even chroma keying in an ambulance last night and the waveform monitor was invaluable.  It would be nice to get my T4i in action for shoots as well however so I hope progress goes well.  Particularly as I can't up the bitrate over 1.2x on most memory cards on my my T2i, and I'm hoping the Digic5 + UHS-I of the T4i support will let me get that higher. :)

I just read this WHOLE THREAD front to back (as it has been a while since I have kept up with where we are) and I'm more lost than I was before I read it! All this talk about all these features I don't understand, boot flag this and dumping that...I'm LOST! The features I DO need and DO understand are audio meters in video mode (why Canon didn't include this is beyond me), zebras, and longer recording times because quite frankly, 29:59 doesn't cut it for a wedding videographer like myself. Does anybody have any enlightening advice or do I need to read that "answers" thread I read about somewhere? I have been longing for ML since I bought my camera in August.

Yeah.  Get something other than a DSLR for filming wedding photography. o.O  Particularly as you'll see the sensor over heat and the camera shut itself down after an hour or so (Depending on environmental conditions of course).  But yeah, if you're trying to be a wedding videographer, get some sorta run of the mill prosumer camcorder instead of a DSLR. o.O

No, but I don't want that to happen to YOUR camera  :o

I appreciate it, because I have some field tests I can put it through when it's ready. :)

I assume that his latest attempt to get the code to work in the alpha made the T4i explode in his face and he's died a horrible, plastic shrapnel death. :(

UHS-I would be pretty useful with increasing the bitrate of video recorded.  Class 10 cards hit the bottleneck pretty quickly.  I think UHS-I is required media for All-I compression on the 6D and 5D for this reason (Assuming you're not using CF on the 5D)

Thinking about it, I'd be willing to throw my T4i in for alpha testing.  There's minimal risk of bricking right?  It just could be so unstable that it'd be unwise to use it on a 'main camera'?

There may be an alpha before Xmas after all.... what features would you like to be featured in the upcoming Alpha 1?

High bitrate modes.  I wanna see what the T4i's UHS-I drive can do. :)

Having a T2i and a T4i, I've been using the T4i as the 'A Camera' and the T2i as the B, since the T4i has the articulated screen, no 4GB limit and other small features, but I've really been missing the audio levels and such from the T2i with ML.  Very much looking forward to this.  Also looking forward to using high bitrates with UHS-I cards once ML unlocks it.

Though I'll be very please if All-I mode is found in that camera. :)

Quote from: Malcolm Debono on November 30, 2012, 04:32:57 PMYou require a faster memory card, otherwise the camera won't keep up and the recording stops. This is why we always advise to try some tests on your own memory cards before setting a high bitrate for an important shot. You won't know when the recording will stop otherwise (remember that the 4gb file limit is reached faster too). Audio also impacts the bitrate - you need to disable audio to achieve the highest bitrate.

I have a T4i, not an EOS-M, but they are similar hardware.  The T4i continues beyond the 4GB file by seamlessly starting a new file, recording up to 29:59 non-stop.  Does the EOS-M have this feature as well?

I'm kinda hoping that a hidden All-I mode from the 5D MkIII is hidden in that 650D's firmware. :)
