Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 60D
November 27, 2023, 01:00:51 AM
Wow its been a while since I've been on these forums, glad to see this project is still kicking around.

Just got my partner a 60D to mess around with, figured some of the features of ML would be of use to her. Trying to find the 1.1.1 firmware in 2023 has proven difficult, can I update her to 1.1.2 and will magic lantern install or does it absolutely NEED 1.1.1? It looks like there is some work being done on 1.1.2 but forgive me I am not a programmer, does this mean 1.1.2 support is coming soon(tm) or has there been roadblocks and I should continue searching for 1.1.1?

I've tried the eoscard program and it keeps stalling out trying to download firmware. Could be the program, could be my crappy internet. Should I keep trying with that or follow another path?

Thanks and I really appreciate the work you guys are doing.

Now that I have spent more time with it...

The SD card slot is FAST. Not sure how fast, but its fast. I have SD cards I benchmark on my computer at 80MB/s (write) and on the 5D3 I noticed they were slow to write. As we know the 5D3 had horrbile write speeds to the SD slot. On the 7D2 however I notice no slowdown. I do not hesitate to write jpg to the SD and raw to the CF slot.

The buffer is large however it can fill fast at 10FPS. It also clears fast with high speed cards (my CF is personally benchmarked at 110MB/s write)

The biggest upgrade that people can notice off the bat is the viewfinder.... OMG the viewfinder is nice. I love how customizable it is.
Under the hood, the 7D2 autofocus system is super awesome. There are a tonne of settings, like the 5D3, but once you have it dialed in you can set it to react the way you need it to for that scenario. My hit to miss ratio is better than ever!

I can't wait for developers to start working on this gody. I would gladly chip in if a dev decided they were going to go at it full time.

General Help Q&A / Re: ML for Canon 7D MKII?
January 22, 2015, 04:21:41 AM
Not asking for a time frame, just wondering... Is anyone working on the 7D2? Is there a dev who stepped up to the plate to try to  get ML to this camera?  Or a paypal we can donate to to get devs the bodies they need?

Lots of reviews online.

I figure I'm one of the first in my area to get one, been on the pre-order list since forever ago. Five consecutive 0s in my serial number lol.

10FPS is amazing. Was really missing it when I upgraded to the 5D3. Such a beautiful sound.
Frame rate doesnt suffer immensely when you have a SD card inserted. Used with a UHS SD card pictures transferred fast. not sure HOW fast since there is no ML yet, but its fast.
the grip feels sharper than the 5D3, it fits in your hand very snugly, somehow it just feels BETTER than the 5D3 (which is already a step ahead of the 7D Mk I in my opinion)
Silent shutter is super quiet and reasonably fast. Like, library quiet. lol.
ISO performance is greatly improved. Anyone saying its just a re-hashed 70D sensor needs to boil their bottom. Images are fantastic!
AF system reaches further to the sides, tho not far enough up and down in my opinion. Still, its an improvment and its pretty excellent.
SO MANY SETTINGS. Im going to be reading and re-reading this manual for months making sure I know the ins and outs of this camera. So many little features.
LEVEL IN THE VIEWFINDER?!? Yes please!  Always on level in the viewfinder, among other useful information making full use of the transparent LCD display.
The list goes on and on and on, this is an upgrade to the 7D in every way.

ONLY GRIPE so far: They COULD have put a touchscreen on it. Im not sad its not a flippy screen, those have their place but not in a high end camera IMO, and a touchscreen COULD be useful for video or live view focusing while not creating extra bulk or interfering with weather sealing.

Oh, and they could have kept the old battery and wifi grips instead of charging another ludicrous $800 for a wifi grip. Im going to be seriously looking into other options, that's for sure.

Last tiny gripe is that the raw files dont work anywhere (yet) tho that will be fixed next update, reportedly.

Try again? All downloads worked fine for me.

The firmware file is to make the camera bootable, once your camera has the booton patch applied its good to go, no need to copy the firmware to every card.

Once your CARD is also bootable you can copy / paste new ML folders to the card and replace the old one.  Generally, I don't worry too much about having the "latest version" because as previously stated just because there is a newer version does not mean that its "better", sometimes it takes several tries before a new version becomes stable enough to use as a daily driver.

So on your card you need:
The autoexe file
The magiclantern folders / files
Pictures of awesome stuff!

Hopefully that answers your questions.

If you follow the guide that is all you need to do aside from play with settings in your camera and have some fun!

As to copying new updated versions of ML to the cards, as long as the card is bootable you should be able to just copy paste the files no problem. Just remember that these builds are pretty experimental and use at your own risk.  Not every "update" is "better".  A lot of them are "hey lets try this and see what happens"

Yeah, its a bug with the current version. If you need to start the cam without ML hold set as you turn the power on. Set the settings you need, turn the cam off, then turn it on again.

Really not a huge problem as you rarely need to change those settings... Once you get them set your good.

Curious, which program did you use to test?  I know some will only test accessable sectors (not written) where others will format the card and test every sector. Any test that will erase data on the card likely tests every sector.

Some cards fail prematurely, some last longer than advertised, but if you did a readwrite test on every sector and it ran through several times with no problems chances are your card is fine. :)

It is also possible there was a glitch when files went to be written and that caused the data to be corrupted. Could be any number of things, loss of power while trying to write to the card, battery or card door was opened or card was ejected before the data could be written, non OEM battery running out of power unexpectedly, random surge of power, hell the list of things that COULD under the right conditions cause problems is as long as my arm.

If your card is fine and you can't see any problems personally I'd get the latest version of EOScard, throw the current "stable" build of ML on there and not worry about it. As previously mentioned I have several cards but only once have had issues where I didnt properly set the bootflag on one of my cards. The only time i'd have cause for concern is if the problem is repeatable but I think its unlikely (tho possible under the right conditions) that ML is causing your headaches.

Good luck!

Forgot to mention, this is why I always carry a couple cards when shooting events, not in case they fill up (64 gig cards ftw) but if one were to fail I wouldn't want to be dead in the water :)

Flash cards fail. Its a fact of life. I'm going to bet its less of a problem with magiclantern and more of a problem with the card itself.

Basically, each memory slot in the card has a limited life span, a limited number of read/write cycles before it will wear out, kind of like tread on your car tires.  There are lots of fancy ways that the card controllers can wear the cards evenly (cycling through every memory 'slot' before starting at slot 1 again, etc) but eventually the cards will fail.

Usually these cards are rated at the tens or hundreds of thousands of cycles and its a non issue, the card will be obselete before it fails (how many of you are still using your 50mb cards from 5 years ago? thats what I thought) HOWEVER...

Most people buy the least expensive card they can because, lets face it, we are limited by our budget.
Most people will keep using a old card as long as they can before its not worth using (like most of my friends using 4gig cards in their current gen camera bodies).
A lot of people buy cards from ebay or third parties
Some stores sell counterfeit cards without even knowing it!

This is a problem because the lower quality flash chips (the ones with the memory 'slots' holding your picture information) will either wear faster (always write to slot 1 first, then slot 2, etc. instead of sequentially) or have a lower number of cycles before it fails.

What can you do? Well personally, I research my cards before I buy them. How fast the card is is only half the equation. What sort of warrenty do they have on their cards? How do I get a broken card replaced (varies from manufacturer to manufacturer), is it a trusted name brand? do they have a PSA about fake cards and how to identify them?

The last cards I bought have a lifetime warrenty. Other's that I was looking at had a 3 month warrenty. Which one do you figure is going to fail faster?  Any pro photographer who has been in the business a while can tell you horror stories of cards failing. When the shot really counts its worth having quality equipment.

TL:DR - You get what you pay for. :)

System menu?
Yes, the Canon menu as opposed to ML menu (pressing the menu button instead of the trashbin)
A minor thing doesn't seem to effect actual shooting but should you have to root around in there looking for something it gets annoying.

Im noticing in the latest build that EOScard installs there are overlays that clutter up the system menu. I find im holding SET while booting to disable ML, then setting the settings i need, then restarting. Didn't used to do this and I havnt noticed anyone else mention this issue, hopefully it can be easily resolved?

EBay has 1000x lexars for a good price. I got a 400x I can get

2:35 continuous on 1500 aspect

1780 continuous on 3:1

Just a warning to anyone buying cards on ebay, there are MANY fraudulent cards out there, with different stickers or even modified to say they have a higher capacity in windows than they really do. Always format the card and run a benchmark / test utility (Google it, there are many) to check that the card has the speeds and capacities claimed.

My experience so far with the 7D in RAW, the basic quality of the image doesn't seem to get wrecked if you vary the ISO up or down (within reason, of course).  I've done critical tests between 100 ISO and 3200 ISO and find staying within 100 ISO to 320 ISO is great.

I have done quite a few shots of events (weddings, etc) up to 3200 ISO and really the noise isn't bad enough to be unusable. 1600ISO in a dark room is better than getting a blurry shot / missing the shot. You can always clean it up a bit in post if you shoot raw.

After boot-flagging my camera, is it possible (and is it safe) to use on CF card the autoexec.bin created by the procedure on the first post in this thread, while putting different files on the ML folder in the FC card, like the original 7D beta2 ML folder?
Note those are from Aug 3. There are much newer files if you follow the links and read up on the development threads. My general rule of thumb: read the last three pages. Any recent developments / releases will be in those last three pages.

It looks like Pelican is working on updating the ML that EOScard uses (searching for the most stable version with the most features). Knowing him it should be ready very soon!

Please read the bit about missing or talked about features are missing. These "features" are missing because they are still being developed and change on a somewhat regular basis. If you want the latest possible features you will have to read up on those specific threads. They are linked in the first page, please go back and read it again.

Ahh, my faith in humanity has been restored!  Thanks for your feedback! Don't forget to use EOScard on EVERY CARD you intend to use with ML instead of just copy-pasting the files over like SOMEONE I know... not naming any names <.<
#19
Derp sorry, yeah EOScard.
It would be nice to list in the program somewhere what verison of ML is being downloaded instead of loading it on the cam, then going through various menus to check the version and date info.

Is there a mostly stable FPS override? Last I knew you could set the settings but it wasnt applying and I havnt noticed anyone mention its fixed. that being said there is a lot of movment in these threads and it is easy to miss something like that. Anyways thanks for the replies! Progress on this project is amazing!

Wondering, will the EOSutility download the latest version? or should we keep downloading from this thread?

While camera is on, mostly.

I'm not sure what caused the err70, but that's the only log file I see in the card...

As an aside, I was told never to do that since the electronics can act like a magnet for dust... Am I missing something?

just following those steps I can now shoot video on my Canon 7D RAW or I have to install some module or something more??

This, unfortunately, is becoming a trend.

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. please. The knowledge you seek is written before you.

Maybe you can use this?

;D

I have bought several ebay batteries that CLAIMED to have much higher capacity than the Canon OEM one. In order to test I set the cam to record with the lens cap on in a box with a computer fan to keep it cool. Without the fan I could go about 45 mins to an hour before overheating became an issue. With the fan there were no overheating issues at all.

In theory you COULD make a rig with a cover of some sort over the camera body and a fan blowing towards the cam on one side and an opening on the other side to let the air out. Remote screen for live view and bolt on a battery pack to power the fan and away you go!  Even blowing warm air over the camera body will help cool it down.

Best thing about this is no ice packs needed and no risk of condensation in the camera!

Yup really sucks you can't deal with everything just by plugging the camera in and using the cam as a card reader but thats Canon for ya. My local computer store had card readers for less than $10.

Some higher quality card readers can transfer faster (USB 3.0) so if you intend to use it to transfer lots of pictures or video it might be faster than through the cam.  /2 cents
