I've already bought 8 Komputerbay 64gb cards, but have no way to test them until
we're picking up both Mark III's. Which will be next Friday. The shoot is will be Sat-Sun.

So you have 8 cards and 2 cameras, so you're doing a 2 camera shoot with about 4 cards per camera?

Each card records what, about 8 minutes total?
And how long does it take to copy off to a computer/hard drive? Probably a fair bit longer than 8 minutes.

Is that enough cards? Have you tried runnign through the whole workflow, seeing how long everything takes and if there are any delays introduced waiting for cards to copy?

This is one of the productions where me and my friend have to do everything from producing
to all the creative work. Our work schedules unfortunately prevented any other testing except
the tests we can run the night before the shoot :(

I will say it again, run tests and get used to it. Preparation is really key. If you're planning on showing up on set without ever having used your particular set up and expect everything to work flawlessly right away, you're looking for trouble.

I'd emphasise what Midphase said.

If you're trying to do everything yourselves and you've not properly tested it all, that's a big risk.
There are a lot of things that can potentially go wrong.

Yes, ML RAW can work and be great but almost everyone seems to have teething troubles with it and most people on this forum are shooting small test videos that don't involve other people and scheduling. It sounds like you're making more a proper film.

On this production is the extra quality of shooting RAW really worth the risk of delays, faulty cards, losing footage and all the extra time and disk space needed? I'm not saying those things WILL happen, but given your lack of testing they MIGHT.
Aren't the plot, the acting and how easy it is for the actors on set, the composition of the images and so on more important than an improvement in image quality?

When HDMI monitor is connected to 5D3 1.2.3 in mirroring mode we can't display ML bars on 5D3's LCD screen because camera sets new value to lv_disp_mode. When there is no mirroring enabled lv_disp_mode is set to 0, when canon overlays are displayed on the screen lv_disp_mode is set to 1.. and finally when mirroring is enabled lv_disp_mode is set to 2 (with or without canon overlays). I replaced all pieces of code which check lv_disp_mode value with "(lv_disp_mode == 0 || lv_disp_mode == 2)" and lv_disp_mode (true) with lv_disp_mode == 1 and now I'm able to display ML bars on LCD screen with mirroring enabled:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/uf5oi7ln28w0879/2014-04-27%2016.06.44.jpg

It's not a final solution because ML bars are displayed also with canon overlays...

(replaced code: zebra.c, debug.c, menu.h, gui-common.c, lens.c, tweaks.c)

That's great! Having magic lantern overlays work on the built in screen while also using an external monitor is the one extra feature I want from ML. Would you share your version of the magic lantern files so I can try it out?

Raw Video / Re: External Monitor without Overlays
April 23, 2014, 07:42:31 PM
I have the same camera and the same issue.

With old versions of the Canon firmware it was not possible to have an external monitor and the built in screen on at the same time.
Magic Lantern simply displayed it's graphics on screen when the screen was otherwise blank of info (the user having pressed the info button enough times to get rid of the Canon overlays).

With the latest version it is, but I think Magic Lantern hasn't updated how it checks for Canon overlays.

1. You need to set the bootflag in your camera.  Only for 5D3 this cannot be undone so read here:

...

That link doesn work for me.

I've found what I think is an alternate link to the same thing
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5810.0
which happens to be a thread I started, but it seems to be locked so I can't post there.

I thinnk I have a solution to this whole problem so I really want to  post an answer!

To follow that up, I've just opened the same frame of a 'normal', 'lossy' and 'lossless' conversion in photoshop and put them on layers above each other. By setting a layer to difference mode and using a curves adjustment to exaggerate differences it's clear that the 'lossless' conversion isn't lossless, but the 'lossy' conversion is identical to the original!

... with thumbnails and optional lossy/lossless DNG compression
TIP: try lossy! It's a great difference in size (sometimes reduction to 30%) but looks the same!

I'm confused by this. The lossless option seems to give me much smaller conversions than lossy, which is opposite to what I was expecting.
Eg for a file I've just converted:
RAW - 640mb
normal - 647m4
lossy - 389
lossless - 183mb

Is it possible the buttons in the batchelor UI are labelled backwards?

Sorry if that all sounds a bit negative, it's not meant to be. It's a great idea to make this user guide and it looks great. I'd just like it to be as simple and clear as possible. If you want me to make a video of the way in which it fails I can.
#10
And the instructions in the guide simply don't work for me. Specifically

"5. In the appropriate Canon sub-menu, select "firmware
update."
6. Once the process is completed, power down and restart
your camera. You should see a quick internal "check" of the
internal memory cards run by the ML firmware."

When I power down and restart my camera the Ml firmware is gone. If I try to access it without powering down, the trash button does nothing, but ML is listed as the current firmware under the firmware update option.

Strangely enough the SET button is disabled too.

Another ambiguity:

"3. Make your Compact Flash and/or SD cards "bootable" by
using one of the pieces of software below. "

Which one should I make bootable, the Compact Flash or the SD or both? Do I get exactly the same results in any case?
That sentence suggests it would be okay to make the CF card bootable, but not the SD card where Magic Lantern is stored. That can't be right can it?
#12
Nice looking guide.

Some of the language is ambiguous, for example:

"To make your life easier, you can use software to create a bootflag that will allow the
Magic Lantern firmware to auto-load when you restart your camera. "

That implies you don't HAVE to do this, but doesn't make it clear. Does the installation still work if you choose not to make the cards bootable? - should say that in the guide.

The Resolve readme for the latest versions says:

"What's new in DaVinci Resolve 9.1.5
...• Improved DNG format support
"

Is it really DNG they mean or cinemaDNG?

Can't get ordinary photo DNG recognised.
Thanks

I'm not sure of this, but I think the major people here - and in video - are working on Mac or going to work on Mac - or Hackintosh. I'm not sure. Some software like ACR is the same for both, but not DaVinci or Final Cut X as you know.

From my experience, a higher proportion of video people use macs than the general population, but there are still probably more people on PC doing video stuff.
#15
Thanks togg!
#16
What's the update mechanism for Resolve? I have 9.1.3 but can't find an update menu option.

Thanks.
#17
Thanks Berlinchan, but that doesn't seem to work.

I just tried your method of updating and then downgrading the canon firmware and it didn't work. The boot flag is definitely still set on my camera!
#18
I think this is an issue with the way the 5d3 works. The mark 2 took proper full frame stills in movie mode, the mk 3 doesn't. Very annoying!
#19
I don't think you're going to get what you're asking for.

Can you give an example of another file/format/system for which similar information is available? I don't think so.

No manufacturer is going to specify which NLE you should use for example, and while they may quote things like dynamic range the figures aren't always accurate and the standard advice is to do your own tests if it's critical.

Different people are going to come up with different file format, software and workflow solutions that suit their different needs.

AFAIK from this forum the file format is simply a sequence of 14bit, uncompressed images of certain pixel dimensions. There's no specific tone curve or color space.
#20
You mention using  a neutral profile. The profile doesn't affect the image at all when recording in raw, so you may want to choose another profile to fain something elsewhere, for example a contrastier profile to make it easier to focus, or a very flat profile so you can see more of what you're capturing in the extremes of the tonal range.
#21
Just got  a64gb from Amazon in the UK, trying to figure out if it's fast enough.

These are probably silly questions, but I can't find the answers anywhere

1) How do I get the benchmark info from my camera screen onto this forum? Is there a way to take a screenshot to a file somehow?

2) What write speed is the minimum for 1920x1080? Ideally in 25fps? The ML menus say 86.4 I think, but people are reporting being able to record continuously even with write speeds that dip below that.

#23
Unless it was possible to change the iso gain on a row-by-row basis this wouldn't do anything that couldn't be done easily and with more control in post right?

Formatting a card does not affect or remover the bootflag on the camera. To do this you have to run the original ML fir that you used to install it. When you do that you will see the same "success" screen you saw when you first set the bootflag but you will notice at the bottom instructions on removing it (by changing to either Av or Tv etc while the success screen is showing).

I'm pretty sure that piece of information is NOT correct. The whole point of this thread is that what you suggest DOES NOT WORK for the 5d3.
#25
Would love a way to turn off the bootflag on the 5DIII.

After much reading AFAIK it's currently not possible:
