No answer...
So it seems than for playing with picture profiles, Magic Lantern doesn't give me any advantages compared to Canon firmware?
Right?

Hi,

I need your advises.
I have to shoot with my 2 cameras:
- Canon 600D/Rebel T3i with Magic Lantern
- iPhone 5 with Filmic Pro http://www.filmicpro.com/support/

I need to make these cameras matching as much as I can.

I understand that there will be a huge difference in depth field. I hope than using the iPhone for wide shots and the Canon for closer shots could be OK (do you think so?)... but I need that picture quality matches.

How could I?

Should I use a picture profile during shooting in both cameras that could match. Do you think so?
With Filmic Pro I could use Natural (Apple default), Dynamic, Flat and Log modes.
On Canon with ML, what could be fine?

Then I'll finalize with FinalCut Pro X editing and grading (I never made any grading until now with FCP).

What could be your advises for the process, picture settings,...?
Is there an almost fast & simple process to get it?

Thanks for your help

It should be enabled if you want to record audio with the video (since ML can control audio chip but canon don't saves audio when it's disabled in the menu from the pic you posted).
Of course I want to record audio with video. That's why I bought a VideoMic Pro!
;)
You are right : in this case there was no audio recorded (ML gave me an alert: "Sound is disabled")
So I went back to Canon menu and selected back Sound recording/Sound rec./Manual

Now the question I have is:
are the Canon Rec. level settings important or overrided by Magic Lantern?
http://cjoint.com/13jv/CAwpbIB94yA.htm

juantrueno said that putting them almost at minimum was the best settings for him.
I have read that too somewhere else on internet but I supposed that it was the best settings only in case of Magic Lantern was not used.

Otherwise I supposed that if ML Audio "Override setting" is set ON, no matter what are the Canon Rec. level settings because they are overriden by ML.
Is that correct?
:o

By turning off canon menu audio, you mean Disable Sound rec. from this menu ?

Right?

For 600D audio part is not same as other cameras so on Magic Lantern try to have higher mic boost instead of analog gain, they are both analog but boost seems with less hiss noise
Hum very interesting...
What are the differences between "analog gain" and "mic boost" ?

Last night I was doing some tests and for now the best result is with VMP + 20DB and manual audio on cannons menu all the way down just one step before turning of.
I think that modifying Canon Audio menus doesn't change anything to results as long as "Override settings" is selected in Magic Lantern Audio menu...
Am I wrong?
#6
Well I was here to be helped.
Not sure my settings are OK but...

- for Levels in am only playing with Analog gain: +15db seems to be fine for what I have recorded (+20dB is set also on the Rode VMP)
(I don't use digital  gain because I have read somewhere it was better (?) not to use it...)

- on Rode VMP I always use the High Pass Filter to cut out the sound of air conditioning, handling noise while adjusting,...

- I keep always (indoor/outdoor) unchanged the Magic Lantern "Wind Filter" settings settings : ON (DC Filter ON / High Pass Filter2 / HPF2 Cutoff Hz : 400Hz). But honestly I don't understand much about that and I look here for advises...
::)

Hi,

sorry for this newbie question but I am afraid of doing bad settings, and I shoot tomorrow...

I use ML 2.3 with "600D Audio Test release": http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2032.0

On Rode VideoMic Pro:
- High Pass Filter (HPF) ON
- +20dB ON

On Magic Lantern:
- Analog gain: +15db (and it's here that I modulate depending of the audio source to record)
- Mic boost: OFF
- Digital Gain: 0 for all
- Output volume: 0db

• Is it OK until now, are these settings the good ones?
::)

• Tomorrow I'll shoot indoor, so do I have to turn off all the "Wind Filter" settings? (DC Filter OFF ???/ High Pass Filter2 OFF / HPF2 Cutoff Hz : 80Hz)
Is that correct?

• If I shoot outdoor I should turn the "Wind Filter" settings ON (DC Filter ON / High Pass Filter2 / HPF2 Cutoff Hz : 400Hz), even if I don't have any deadcat yet?
(it's said that I could get infos p.77 of ML26121A.pdf, but I can't find this file on internet...)

Big thanks for your help and your patience!

General Help Q&A / Re: Install: unzip autoexec.bin ?

Quotejust re-run the installation fir
So when I install ML with 600D-102.fir on my card, it becomes bootable, right?

@MzytengaM
Also in that case I get the ability to use my DSLR without ML by pushing SET button on start,
as discussed here:

OK thanks nanomad it works now.
So ecek2 was right when he said
Quotefreshly formated card mean it doesn't have bootflag.

But how can I get a bootable card?
Do I have to format it with the OSX Disk Utility from my Mac?

Ah... does i mean, as I install on a 600D, that I have to take the 600D-102.fir file from the last 2.3 ML version and reuse it on the last NightBuilt?
Is it correct?

Thanks ecek2 but I am not sure that's the problem:
I tried to install back my previous version (2.3 with 600D Audio Test) and got a successful install

I'm more about a failure of the Nightly build: my install process (?) or the .zip file itself

Thanks nanomad
That's what I have in my card too

Don't you think that this sentence isn't very clear and could lead to confusion?
QuoteUnzip all of the files from from Magic Lantern zip archive on the root of your card.
I am not native, but something like that could be more evident:
QuoteUnzip the Magic Lantern zip archive and drop all of the files on the root of your card.

By the way I have a problem installing the last Nightly buid. I went there:
http://nanomad.magiclantern.fm/nightly/
but when unzipped and copied on a freshly formated card I get this warning message: http://cjoint.com/12dc/BLrpD4OfKrU.htm

What's wrong ?

General Help Q&A / Install: unzip autoexec.bin ?
December 17, 2012, 03:01:58 PM
Hi,

something unclear for me: do I have to unzip autoexec.bin during ML install process?
If I do that I get a autoexec.bin.cpgz file but I am unsure to have to do that step.

Please, could you tell me if that's needed?

Thanks

OK nanomad I'll follow your advise.

The link I provided in my previous post was the good one?

Are the "official" nightly builds downloadable from here?
http://nanomad.magiclantern.fm/nightly/

Could I use my ml settings with my actual MAGIC.CFG ?
I mean: will it be compatible or should I have to enter again all the settings from the new ML menu?

If you wish to use the camera sometimes without ML you can (...) when starting up the camera press and hold the SET button and it will not boot.
Oops... it seems not to work...

Is it because of my version?

You mean that as long as I don't press on trashcan ML is only on stand by?
But as soon as I press on trashcan button, it's active and override Canon settings?

General Help Q&A / ML always active?
December 13, 2012, 07:29:23 PM
Sorry for this naive question but I doubt...
In photo mode (let's say Manual or Av for instance) is Magic Lantern always on?
I mean if I don't use LiveView and don't clic on garbage icon to set parameters with ML menu, is ML active?
???

Thanks
Paul

Thanks

After you create your global settings for a scene, on what parameter do you act to adjust them?
Is it ISO like Bif in this post?
http://www.t2iforum.com/video-specific-general-discussion/how-to-reduce-noise-in-video/msg21188/#msg21188

Oops too long question...
:P

I should have asked:
have you full manual settings for documentary or TV news when DSLR is handheld and moved around the place?
;)
#23
Hi,

sorry for this naive question but I need your advises for shooting handheld in a place where I'll not create the light.
I mean that I'll not be placed behind a tripod with my settings fixed for the planned scene with fixed enlightenment,
but I'll be in real life moving everywhere following and filming people that are themselves moving around...

So there will be movements!
And exposition will change... I need to let something automatic, no?

What would be your settings approach ?
Manual video mode with a global setting made (aperture, shutter speed) and keep WB, ISO in automatic mode to adjust automatically?

Thanks for your advises for best practice
;)

Thanks Francis (and sorry for my delayed answer) that's clear!

In Photo mode there's a new color: yellow
So we have: Green  Cyan  Yellow  Red

Green: seems to be fine
Red: blurry

But Cyan and Yellow?
#25
Well I must apologize but I still need some more explanation about shutter color code in ML as I can't see it in documentation...
nanomad told me about green and red but I don't really understand cyan.
Could you tell me ?

Thanks
;)
