General Chat / ML bitrate settings and the iPad Air
March 16, 2014, 11:35:49 PM
Hi,
I have the iPad Air. I have a Canon 60d camera. I use Pinnacle Studio on my iPad to edit all my videos. I am able to import the Canon video files directly into my iPad with out having to convert the files first. I would like to avoid the conversion phase. For the most part this work. But because the video format is slightly different there are some glitches. Is there anything in ML such as using a certain bit rate that will make the files iPad compatible? Or any other option in ML that would work.

Thanks,

John Gerard

General Chat / Re: bitrate explanation?
March 16, 2014, 11:16:02 PM

I was just thinking about this question. This is what my understanding is of Bit rate. Bit rate refers to 2 general functions. 1) how many bits the camera, etc. is going to record at a certain speed, which is linked to the Frame rate, to maintain a no drop out video stream at a set quality setting such as HD Vs SD. And 2) the more bits recorded per frame the more information about the scene is captured will in turn create a higher quality video. So, at a given constant frame rate how many bits are needed to be recorded at a given quality setting to maintain a no dropout video stream on my Canon 60d?
Others can chime in if I have something incorrect here with additional thoughts.
I feel the minimum bit rate to record Full HD no drop outs is 20 mbit on my camera. The camera can write up to 30 mbit. I tried the 4GB class 4 SD card that came with my Canon camera Kit. And that was way to slow to record video with out a lot of drop outs. I originally bought SanDisk 8GB 20mbit cards and in my tests that works. I prefer to find out what the actual bit rate write speed the card is designed for not the Class Rating. I don't see much if any quality difference myself between 20mbit and 30mbit. What ever maintains a no drop out video stream would probably work. I like to have the highest quality possible even if I can't tell the difference? So I use 45mbit SD cards. You would have to experiment by recording the same scene at different bit rates and compare side by side. Compression like that performed by a computer is a whole different topic.

Hey guys!
Can someone explain please what does bitrate really do in video? And what is the technical difference between, for example, a 40 mbit/s video and a 20 mbit/s video?

Hardware and Accessories / Camranger
July 05, 2013, 03:32:46 AM
Hi all,
I have been looking into the device called Camranger. There is a very detailed video on YouTube called something like digital camera dinner or something like that. Check it out. From what I read so far the device has no firmware in the device itself. All the software/ firmware is in the iPad app software. Any chance you guys could Develop your own iPad app for camranger. If so then I will probably buy camranger over iUSBport camera.

Thanks,

Hi again,
As I say in my other note I still want to get one of the two devices cam ranger or iusbportcamera. Still trying to gain more info to make my decision. Anyone know if either product can access/run ML? Any tidbit of info is appreciated
I got a case adapter to allow me to use the magnifying screw on lenses on my IPad. I use CamPro XL app.  It is really nice to be able to use the iPad's big screen and know that what you see is what you get. Also being able to use the iPads touch screen is reall nice.

Thanks,

John Gerard

Hi,
I am really interested in this item/topic. I have seen two similar products. Camranger which is talked about here and IUSBPort Camera. A product by Sanho corp/hypershop. Both of these products are $300 us. I am thinking about getting one of these. Also I am interested in hearing how you got set up and are using the Raspberry Pi to perform similar functionality.
Regarding the Camranger and iUSBPort Camera can either of these products control my Canon 60D through the ML firmware?
I have an iPad3. Any and all thoughts are welcome.

Thanks,
John Gerard

General Help Q&A / Re: 60D - creating new ML disk?
April 20, 2013, 12:10:35 AM
Hi,
I have about 6 or 8 16GB sand disk 45Mbs cards and 2 32 sandisk 45mbs cards. I have found that I have to install each ML software like it is the very first time performing the install. Start at step #1 and continue on making sure you do not miss a step. I tried just copping the ML files over thinking that would do it being a second card but did not work. The only thing that did work every time was starting from scratch with each card.

I believe that the above should work since you stated that the new cards are the exact same cards, specs etc.
I started by formatting the cards in my camera, etc. I found this procedure easier than using a boot disk utility on my PC. You even have to perform the step that updates the firmware and loads ML on the camera as one of the steps. Remember: I am not talking about the Canon firmware update but the step to select the update firmware option in the camera that loads the ML software into the camera's memory.

General Chat / ML 2.4 ? For Canon 60D
April 18, 2013, 09:17:53 PM
Hi all,
Been busy with other stuff for the past few months. Just getting back into video again
I thought I saw a message a little bit ago about a version 2.4.  Is there a 2.4 version out yet? I only see on the ML website version 2.3.

Thanks,

Hi all,
Loving ML on my Canon 60D. It is really awesome! Keep up the good work.

These are the features I use every day...

White balance
ISO
Shutter Speed
Aperture amount
Overall Audio gain
Left and right audio gain control

I don't know what the following feature is called so I will describe it...
Take for example the Exposure menu.
If you select a setting such as shutter speed and then hit the set button this is displayed on screen with a blue background and white letters. where I can make quick adjustments or rotate to a different setting in a particular menu. This is great so far.
What I would like to see is a way maybe in a preference menu or something else where I could combine or add just the functions as described above to one menu that I can rotate around and quickly access my most used settings. Right now if I want to adjust the audio gain I have to go all the way back to the audio menu hit set make adjustments then go back to the expo menu to adjust the exposure setting taking way to much time. I know that I can access the volume controls by pressing one of the other keys but this is just not very convenient. For one I still have to go between functions which is hard and combersome. If I could just rotate a dial around through one menu list for all needs necessary functions described above this would be awesome. :-) and using the onscreen rotating menus as already done is very easy to use I love this function. Except as stated earlier that I can't access the audio function menu in the same menu list as the Expo menu. This is a much need feature and I believe this would solve the quick audio adjustment problem that everyone is asking for. Also I would prefer the reverse of what is implemented now which is having the top smaller dial on my Canon 60D control the menu section and the bigger dial control the adjustment of the selected item such as ISO setting.  Let me know if you need anymore information to clarify what I am talking about. In conclusion, I really feel this would make things quick and easy to use. Also there are some functions in the for mentioned menus that I really don't use but I have to scroll through these anyway.

Thanks in advance for considering my request,

John Gerard

Thanks, I think it is slightly easier to use on the 5mk Ii than on my 60D. I have done this. The joystick or directional keys are a little hard to use on my 60D a scroll wheel is much much quicker to use. Also with my eyes in sunlight on a 3 or 3.5" screen the "vol" letters are hard for me to see.

I've made this, not so great, but it super short. Tutorial on how to do this, I really hope this helps people out as this feature makes a world of difference to me.

I forgot that another way is to goto the ML menus and goto the audio menu and then press SET this will allow you to easily set the volume controls. Except that it might interfere with setting other options. I have not tried this out Yet. It might still not be the end all feature to quickly controll audio settings.

I noticed in the 'can not be done section'

But if it is possible who would be up for setting up / paying into a crowd-funding pool? This could then pay to get, Real Time audio level adjustment.

As a documentary film maker, it would be worth its weight in gold, to be able to adjust the audio level on my 5dMkii and 550d in real time, without having to stop recording and go into the menu.

Does anyone know if this is even possible?

Hi,
I went into the short cut menus prefs and turned everything off except volume gain and "Use Set Button" under Arrow/Set Shortcuts.  This helps me a lot. Now when I press the mettering button on my 60D it only takes me to the vol setting witch I can change using the arrow keys. Pretty simple. Using a click dial I still think is faster, though.

Hi,
I have the Canon 60D.
I just got back from my third in a row shooting trip. First to prefece this update i have to say i love, love, love, love Quick Zoom. :-) I am getting pretty used to using the features in ML and how to get to features I use most, quickly. The features I use the most are the following....
manual modes...
ISO, shutter speed, white balance, appurture, maybe a few other settings.
I don't know the exact name of the following feature so I will try my best to describe it....
Ok, I first enter the ML menus.  Then Expo (Exposure setting menu). Then let's say I select ISO for example and press SET. This pops me back to LV mode with just the ISO setting displayed on the screen witch is white letters on a blue background. I can either make changes to the ISO amount by rotating one of the click wheels or cycle around to the other mode/item in the selected menu which for this example is the Exposure menu. I like  this one because the Letters are a litte bigger and the color scheme, white on blue is easy for me to see. Easier to read than looking at the setting displayed at the bottom of the view screen.
Now, in this mode described above Quick Zoom does not work. I would love, love if Quick Zoom would work in this settings mode. Right now I have to hit the menu button to disable the above settings "Quick Zoom" and then go into the menus and hit SET to activate the setting again. ;Just to many steps.
What I love about Quick Zoom is that the camera goes into Quick Zoom just by rotating the focus ring and by not having to press the zoom button on the camera makes everything so much faster and just a joy to use. Thank you for adding Quick Zoom to ML my most used Feature.

Hi,
In my research the consensus is that the 60D I also have can once Read/write at 30mb. I have the 45mb Sandisk cards.  So if this is true then any card faster will only be able to transfer date at the camera's read/write speed.

General Help Q&A / Video mode shortcut
September 01, 2012, 08:13:23 PM
Hi,
I have the canon 60D.
I read that there is a way when I am in one of the photo modes to quickly jump to the video mode. Does the feature shortcut exist in the current 2.3 firmware.. If yes, how do I use it. If no, can this feature be added back into the firmware.  On the 60d "M" photo mode is at one end or the 60D's dial and the Video mode is at the complete other end.

I have used this function. With my eyes in bright sun I can't see if this feature is on or off half the time  and the arrow keys/ joystick on the 60D is not as easy to use as the click wheels. You can add other options to this function and cycle around. I need to go back and turn off all other functions that I have associated with this function. That will help a lot.

Feature Requests / Auto WB setting
August 31, 2012, 06:54:44 AM
auto color balance setting in click wheel. The only way I can get back to auto WB is to go through the camera's Canon firmware menus.  Adding this to the click wheel as one more setting I feel is quicker and easier to use.

Feature Requests / Config file in Canon memory
August 31, 2012, 06:50:09 AM
Hi all,
I am also new to ML. I have the Canon 60D  i also donated to the cause. I tried to install ML about a year ago but got to scared hearing stories that ML could destroy my Camera and could not figure out how to make my cards bootable.  Now ML works great and it was easy to install thank to a video I was told about on YouTube over on the DV Information Network Forums.
Here is my feature request....

config file in camera's PROM/RAM so if I make changes while using one card installed I don't have to spend time making changes to my other cards.

P.S. I love ML so far :-) keep up the good work.

Great idea I second that update. I too would love this feature on my 60D. I would like a quick way such as  using one or both of the control dials to be able to adjust the audio levels quickly. Using the menus just takes to much time.

Hi all,
Is shooting full 18meg photos in Video mode on the 60D possible? Right now the camera can take HD widescreen photos during video record. I shoot a lot of videos and photos switching back and forth. It would really save me time if I can shoot both without changing modes.

User Introduction / I'm new to ML
August 31, 2012, 04:45:55 AM
Hi all,

I usually frequent the DV Information Network Forums. Great guys over there.
I have been doing video on and off for about 6 years now. I shoot mostly sports outdoor videos. A lot of tennis video match recording and individually slow motion video to show client there strokes. One has to start somewhere and I started out shooting with a Panasonic Palm Camcorder. I then advanced to the Sony FX-7 HDV video camera. On the photo side I have the Canon 10D a nice Still Camera. About a year ago I purchased the Canon 60D. A much, much improvment over the 10D. I love the live view modes. I am current on a plane coming back from the US Open tennis tournament. And recently was at the Monterey Reunion auto Races. Trying out the latest 2.3 ML Firmware. Man is it good. I even monitored the sound and made my own cable from the video composite cable that came with the Canon 60D. I am also working on a Merlin style stabilizer partly from designs that are on YouTube.  I did make my own Blimp that works quite well. You do need an extension adapter to rase the blimp up a bit on my Canon 60D. I have the NGT2 Shotgun mic. The one with an AA battery to power the mic so it is quite long.
