General Help Q&A / Re: 60D with latest nightly
December 02, 2014, 08:25:57 PM
I have installed  latest Oct. 2014 Nightly on my 60D and the functions I use work fine.  So far no difference than the previous stable version.

Hi,
I use Tascam DR40 with my 60D (latest Oct. nightly installed). Just connect Tascam's line output to canon mike input. Tascam level set to 50db and ML audio analogue gain set to 17db, I get cristal clear sound on both Tascam and canon. If you are recording an interview in a room the Tascam built in mikes are enough, no other mike is needed. This probably will work with all digital recorders. Unfortunately all DSLR mike preamps are very weak, addition of an external device is necessary. I hope this may be some help.

OK. Found it. Anyone having similar problem, here it is. On the Prefs menu go to LV Display Presets and cancel the off box. I just put it on 4 and every info on the Movie LV is visiable now. :D

Hi,
With the latest nightly installed the movie mode live view doesn't appear. It may be activated somewhere in the menu but there is no guide for this nightly and I just couldn't find it.  Any help will be appreciated.

General Help Q&A / 60D with latest nightly
July 27, 2014, 07:29:03 PM
Hi all 60D users. My 60D works fine with the v.2.3   However I was unable to install the latest Nightly.2014Jul25.60D111  version. the camera keeps asking to update Canon firmware, which I have updated the same 1.1.1 version again and again but result is the same. Is there a bug in this nightly or which nightly is working best on 60D. Your comments will be appreciated. Thanx in advance.

Hi rawfa,
Sound is always a problem with DSLRs. Its got nothing to do with ML. Its all about your mikes output signal. Audio Technica lav mike I have (3350) has a very low output level, no good for anything unless you use a preamp which is not a handy thing to work with. Neighther digital recorders nor DSLRs have good enough built-in preamps. So all you need to do is look for a mike with strong output level or use expensive Sennheiser or Sony etc wireless lav systems. Youtube has a variety of mike comparison videos, check them up. Mike level 100 on H4N is way too high and there must be a lot of internal hiss when you up the volume. Unfortunately audio people do not build easy affordable mikes with acceptable sound quality. Good mikes are too expensive others piece of junk. Why they make mikes with unusable output levels is ununderstandable. Check the video below.  Good luck.

General Help Q&A / Re: Ext Mic audio on 5D MkII
February 03, 2013, 06:07:19 PM
I have mentioned this audio issue elsewhere in the forum. After some days of testings and various experiences the best settings I found as follows. First I only connected wired lav mikes to my 60D so all tests are done with AT3350. But will work with every mike depending on that specific mike's signal output strength. As recommended in ML manual lowering the digital gains to "0" and analog gain max "32"dB doesn't work. The input level is too weak and too much background hiss. With my lavs  digital gain "6" and analog gain at "29" gave me the best result. Audio level is between -12 / -24 dB area which is good enough. There is still some hiss but that much is acceptable and  can be easily removable in the post. So my suggestion is to play with both digital and analog gains , do many different recordings and find out the best matching point in terms of audio level and minimum background hiss depending on your external mike's signal. Digital gain up to "12" dB works OK. With or without ML you are still using the camera preamps and DSLR preamps are not strong enough for a pro work. ML does not power up the preamps and kill the background hiss, this is not possible. However, unless there is an urgent need to record sound in camera I would always use a portable recorder. I hope this  may be some help to everyone having audio problems.

Hi everyone,
Some more audio issues here. I usually record sound on an external device. Now tried to record directly into the 60D with a wired lav mike (Audio Technica 3350) , did every adjustment according to the book but there is still a big background hiss beyond acceptable level. I use the same mike with Tascam and Sound Devices recorders , its cristal clear. ML supposed to reduce the hiss considerably to my knowledge but I am quite surprised. I do not expect the sound to be as clear as on the above mentioned recording devices however I was not expecting it to be that poor eighter. Any thoughts on this I will be appreciated.
Also there is a huge internet discussions on Tascam DR-40 recorder. It has good sides and a lot of problems too. I have been using it for sometime now and technically quite got into it. If anyone having questions on that recorder please post your questions here, I'll try to help you out as much as I can.

OK  SOLVED,
When loading a cinema style keep the camera on eighter M or Movie mode. I did it with M mode and in movie mode nothing showed up. Only for 600D you  load a style in M mode. For other  Canons  movie mode works too and now the Cinema1 picture style is visible in ML movie mode too.
I've got this info from Philip Bloom's web page.

Hi everyone,
I have installed Cinema1  cinestyle on my 60D. Its OK with the Canon menu however ML 2.3 does not show it at all. I have reinstalled the same pf2 file with EOS utility several times but the result is the same. Cinema1 is a great looking picture style which doesnt require post grading .  Anyone out there for any suggestion???   Thanx.

General Help Q&A / Re: Bit Rates
January 12, 2013, 06:22:16 PM
Here is some tests I made for those interested in bitrate subject. I downloaded  Mediainfo which is a great tool. And tested some video footage as follows:
Canon 60D  1920x1080  25fr     color space 4.2.0      overall bitrate   45.8 Mbps
                     720x1280   50fr     color space 4.2.0      overall bitrate  47.3 Mbps
Nikon 5100   720x1280   50fr     color space  4.2.0     overall bitrate   12 Mbps ( poor Nik)
Lets remember  HDV is 25 Mbps,  full HD minimum broadcast requirement is 35 Mbps,  BBC broadcast requirement is 50 Mbps  (color space 4.2.2)
All these figures make Canon a winner at 45.8 Mbps very close to 50.   :)

General Help Q&A / Re: Bit Rates
January 12, 2013, 04:40:14 PM
OK, since there is not going to be a fixed bitrate on Canon like the video cameras it is not  important in my case to mess around with the bitrate function. Images out of 60D is already great. Many thanx for the reply.

General Help Q&A / Bit Rates
January 12, 2013, 12:04:45 AM
Pro video cameras record video in various bit rates such as 25mbps, 35mbps, 50mbps  so on.  What is original Canon video bit rate? i.e 60D
In ML  CBR mode what the adjustments [-16...+16]  point to in terms of  mbps.  Also is there a simple software to analyse video bit rate etc.

General Help Q&A / Slit-scan photography with ML
December 24, 2012, 11:40:55 PM
Hi everyone,
I have not seen any slit-scan with ML tutorial yet. Is there anyone experimented with the jello effect, how to set up and handle the camera and some sample photos. This would be very helpful.
