Is there any rough timeline of when the 5D2 raw firmware hack will be available?

General Help Q&A / Intervalometer troubleshooting
May 21, 2013, 02:04:43 AM
Can any timelapse experts help with using the intervalometer. After enabling, I see a message saying that ML is taking pictures but the camera is NOT firing. No pictures are being recorded
Is there a ML setting that prevents the shutter from working in intervalometer mode?
#3
Is this even possible? I am on the bench considering the 1DX

General Help Q&A / External mic to Zoom H4N to 5D2
October 10, 2012, 07:24:07 PM
Hi
Thinking of getting this cable
http://www.sescom.com/product.asp?item=LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N
to patch the audio out from my H4N to my ML hacked 5D2.

From what I've read elsewhere, even if you do this, the audio recorded by the Zoom is still going to be far superior than that in the 5D2.

Can anyone confirm this and explain why?

General Help Q&A / Re: ML Digital ISO optimum setting?
September 23, 2012, 05:11:57 AM
ok read this
http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/ISO#Then.2C_what_is_the_best_ISO.3F

but would still like a confirmation
Also, I think the article, though informative, has a lot of assumptions and is not 100% accurate

ie enabling HTP will give you slightly more highlite detail, but to the best of my knowledge, will have no benefit in the shadows.

Anyone care to comment?

General Help Q&A / ML Digital ISO optimum setting?
September 22, 2012, 11:40:32 PM
Hi

The help menu recommends setting the Canon digital ISO to always be 0.
But can any ML experts share info on the 'best' setting for ML digital ISO?

How do I obtain the ISO's of 160, 320, 640, 1250 for lowest noise?

Are these obtained when the 'Equivalent ISO' equals these values?
OR
Are these obtained when the 'Canon analog ISO' equals these values?

General Help Q&A / Re: Quick Focus and Liveview
September 20, 2012, 03:26:38 PM
Ok, also obvious, the af-on button on the back of the camera...but how do your reassign this button to a half press shutter?
#9
ok partially figured it out.

First AF MUST be enabled on your lens. I know this should be obvious but....

Also, the rotary dial is working as arrow keys for me...

General Help Q&A / Quick Focus and Liveview
September 20, 2012, 02:50:58 PM
Hi
Perhaps this is not a ML specific issue but on my 7D, if I leave AF enabled on any AF lens I have, and set LiveView focus to 'quick mode' with live view enabled., I can quickly get an accurate focus before shooting video by half pressing the shutter

Great trick in run and gun situations and your talent is constantly moving.

No matter what I try I cannot get this to work on my 5DMark2.

Hi
This is driving me crazy. Have googled, read the menu, and still I cannot get the Rackfocus feature to work
First, can someone confirm that by 'arrow keys' on the markII we are actually referring to the toggle button??

I've turned 'Follow focus 'ON' and set to arrow keys

I dial down to 'Focus End Point', hit the 'set' button.
Now I focus to my desired 'end' point and hit the 'menu' button.

So far, so good.

But how do I then change the focus??

If the toggle button is used as arrow keys, every time I select it I jump out of the menu

I've read elsewhere that something so simple shouldn't require a tutorial, but obviously I am not the only one pulling their hair out

Ok, now it is working, not sure why. There are a lot of edge case issues I assume in the way ML interacts with the Canon menus.
I did try resetting all Custom functions, not sure if that did the trick.

General Help Q&A / FPS override> Optimize for....
September 19, 2012, 01:49:00 PM
Can anyone tell me why-when you might choose one of the various optimize settings?
ie

low jello
high jello
low light

Also , why would you ever use a very low setting, say 1 fps, instead of the intervalometer, for doing timelapses?
Always using the intervalometer makes more sense to me because you have higher quality still images to work with, even if they you are shooting JPEG since you can choose a higher resolution than you get when shooting video.

General Help Q&A / Display Hidden Menus missing in prefs?
September 19, 2012, 05:00:48 AM
Hi
Trying to reenable a couple menu items, like histograms, but the 'Display Hidden Menus' seems to be missing under prefs...

Anyone have any clue?

Hi
Under the Expo menu there are separate settings for both Picture Style and REC Picture Style, so you can say use Standard as a preview in Liveview but be recording in Cinestyle.

Ok, works fine. The problem is when I shut the camera off and back on, BOTH are now set to the same REC Picture Style(Cinestyle).

I've tried several times, even manually saving the config file before turning off.

Any ideas?

Hi
Can anyone help with the following?
I want to set my rotary dial(around the set button) to dial in color temperature and

My shutter dial to change aperture

These 2 custom settings would be ideal for shooting video but haven't been able to figure out how to do this...

Unless I am missing something there doesn't seem to be a way to easily change aperture without diving into the ML submenus.
On my 7D the aperture is easily changed with the rotary dial(around the set button)

General Help Q&A / Camera User Setting (Canon menu)
September 19, 2012, 03:20:07 AM
When you register a Camera User Setting (Canon menu), are any current ML settings saved as part of that Custom setting, or are ML settings always independent from the Canon menu settings and global?

General Help Q&A / Is increasing data rate useless or???
September 19, 2012, 03:11:47 AM
I would assume it would have some benefit in reducing banding and artifacts in any area with large areas of flat color. A good test would be simply to shoot 10 seconds of a blue sky with a wide enough FOV so you go from light to dark.
Also guessing it might be beneficial when shooting green screen. has anyone done tests to confirm this?

Read the documentation on Magic lantern ISO but still a little confused.
One thing mentioned in the help menu is that if you set the ML digital ISO to a negative value, you will achieve better rollloff and lower noise at the 'Equivalent ISO' indicated.
Also, it is obvious that now you can achieve an ISO equivalent of 25 if you set ML digital ISO to -2.0 EV which is really useful in bright conditions and you want a shallower DOF.
Can anyone recommend ideal settings to use for video? Are the recommended ISO's of 160, 320, 640 still valid?
You can get these if you set ML digital ISO to -0.3 EV.
Thanks!

General Help Q&A / Where is split screen menu item?
August 22, 2012, 05:01:25 AM
Hi
trying to find 'split screen' option.
Anyone?

So much to learn about ML. Just installed on my 5D2, and it feels as though I have a new camera.
Just read about focus stacking. Can someone tell me if it's possible to do a smooth pull focus using this feature?

Hi
Can someone tell me what effect the different data rate settings have on video quality? What ML settings should be used for optimum video quality?

Hi
Is it possible to use EOS utility for install? Or do I have to use a card reader, and manually copy the files to the blank card?
