Shoot Preparation / Re: Night video settings
June 08, 2014, 08:17:18 AM
I've shot some decent scenes with my 550D, in available/low-light exteriors even with the 18-55mm kit lens at f/3.5. Best option is to get a faster lens, f/2.8 and f/1.8 are easily better choices.

Technicolor Picture Style helps a bit to "get" the maximum information in the "washed" blacks. Not ideal, but helps a bit to process in post after.

Also, make sure to use the "Exp. Override" option and set the shutter speed to 1/24 when shooting 23.976fps. Helps a bit. Everything is (of course) a bit more blurry in movements, but less grainy.

With a minimum work in post using Levels:

...and a good Noise Reduction plugin (NeatVideo comes to my mind), you can get the best, out of a somehow limited camera for low-light shooting. Not the best example, but shows pretty much the power of that plugin:

Hope it helps!

And here's two videos I've done with low-light scenes, shot with the 550D and processed with NeatVideo:

Ware in France was it shot?
1) Thanks for the feedback! I think it's an aesthetic choice then. I don't like when things look "too" real on-screen. A movie should not look "too" real imho, as it's a piece of fiction.
2) It's been shot in Québec, Canada.

I have the same mic.

Yes, you have to buy a preamp, if you want to get a good sound level.
I don't recommend Juicelink, if you going to buy one, it's cheaper and very good preamp the TASCAM D60. More connectors, double recording system - one as you want and other in different DB - screen, etc.
Own that mic as well.
Yes you would need some preamp to get a clean signal recorded with your DSLR.
I disagree here. The JuicedLink preamps are much cleaner than any recorder available as for now. Here's a video showing what I mean:

Just wanted to share my last short film, which took roughly 6 months to complete. I had a lot of fun shooting it with the kid and 3 friends!
I know I'm not a writer in the soul, so the story is pretty basic and predictable. I've put a good amount of time and work into the Cinematography and Audio mix. Let me know what you think, I'm open for criticism, positive or not!
Thanks for your time!

Bare in mind that the current ML development does not support audio...
Haven't updated my version since the last stable release. I'll take a look at it then!

If I ever get one of those GH from Panasonic, I'll be able to use that lens on it.
I prefer to keep mine intact, and use it as a macro lens on my EOS:

Hey Brawl, check RØDE's NTG series
For the price, it's a very decent line of shotgun microphone. I recommend them as well.

I've been working with a Juicedlink for 2 years now, and I really like the sound quality that it amplifies. But the build quality and features where lacking.
[..]
I've also been using the Rode NTG-2, and I'm very pleased with that.
1) For the preamp quality, at that price, it's hard to beat. I have the CX211 (2x units) and I love them. Allows me to record clean audio almost noise-free.
2) The JuicedLink with the NTG-2 is a solid combo. Both are excellent product in the mid-level range.

and which lavalier to buy?
For a very reasonable price, I would recommend you the Azden EX-503. It runs for about 25$ shipped on B&H and it gives decent results. It runs on "plug-in power" so there's no need of battery. You must enable that function in the camera though.
Here's a quick video I've done using it straight into the T2i:

where do i phut this in the ML folder on my memory card?
Sorry for the late reply,
There's a "Cropmarks" folder in the folder structure when ML is installed on your card. Then, you can put up to 9 cropmarks in that folder. Otherwise, it won't work as there's too much cropmakrs tha allowed.

Just curious, is there a list of user classes, in which the selected range is listed?  Like: 0-99 = New Membe

General Help Q&A / Aspect ratio using Cropmarks
August 31, 2013, 10:38:22 PM
Maybe you'd want to check these two other topics, in which I've explained more about using Cropmarks in which I've included some of the cropmarks I'm using myself (link to the 2013 updates cropmarks), and why it's better to work with non-cropped videos.

Hope it'll help you!

Except for my Canon HV40 camcorder, I'm running on a Magic Lantern'd T2i here. I like what I can get out of it for the price.
Thanks for the efforts put into this hack.

- You can also go for a submenu from which you can reboot the camera with a different config file (tip: use PROP_REBOOT_MAYBE for that).
It cannot be done, with a submenu, but "on-the-fly" ? Without rebooting?
Choosing from all the different "available" display profiles within that submenu?

General Help Q&A / Re: WB questions

Shooting RAW and using CameraRAW can allow you to WB in post, in case of issue/error while shooting. It makes wonders.

my problem is weird cus i love editing but i dont realy liek editing still shots..its no problem for me edit it  but i just get my first digital camera and i was expecting to have little more  from dslr cameras ;)
I usually shoot RAW and once the first is corrected in Camera RAW, you can create a preset and apply it to the others image you open. Quite easy task.

always i making  another WB after i change location..but not always ican make WB at night ..
Check the number in ML menu once you did the WB. Then apply it manually when you can't, like at night.
I don't bother as I always color grade in post or adjust everything, but you can adjust it manually "by-the-eye", to your taste.

Thank's, interesting but this last line in the wiki article closes the request maybe:
but if got it right maybe a cropmark can be done?
1) I guess so. But if you take the concept and work from there, could you be exposed to some sue?
2) Of course. Resize the file and use it as a cropmark. Of course, you won't be able to see anything else than this (except the white areas) but it could work. Again, as I said, I don't think it would do anything once you've "calibrated" or set your camera. Except the White Balance, there's not much to set apart from Picture Style.

[..] since I'll have to put together all what is needed before starting[..]
All you need is the camera, something to shoot and a computer to edit all together. If you need sound, then an external recorder (ideally with a good microphone) would be preferable for optimal sound.

Good to know, i'll read it now, but i was referring to Prolost Flat PicStyle: http://prolost.com/blog/2012/4/10/prolost-flat.html
Well, it's the Standard mode in every Canon DSLR, with some settings turned down from Canon's menu. Nothing really amazing. But some (not even those mentioned) people also report that they use and prefer these settings. Try and compare for yourself I'd say, best way to determine which one fits the most your needs.

Nice website/blog with nice articles on some useful stuff. Best one is this one imho:

Ok, but once you've set your colors "properly" using these color bars...the settings are saved in ML Config file, no? So, no particular use of it then. Simply WB if needed and you're good to go, I guess.

I'd recommend either the Flaat or Marvel Cine instead of Technicolor CineStyle. The later one is too flat and can introduce banding in some areas. I've been able to get rid of it by adding a thin layer of grain in post, but if you want clean and free picture, you'll get banding using the CineStyle. More informations/explaination here:
