I went out and shot a bit with the new lower data build. I was shooting on the 5dIII, 10bit, MLV.

When I got back, I tried to use the MLVRawViewer (as I've been used to using for a while - this is a great post on using that) Of course, it didn't work.

So, I looked into the MLV_DUMP.EXE and as someone who has never used the CMD prompt before, I was a bit over my head. Anyway, with the grace of God (!) I figued it out (thanks to this post here). I screen grabbed my workflow, it's a bit cumbersome, but boy is it fast.

Here's what I do.

1. Separate each .MLV file into a folder.
2. Copy the MLV_Dump.exe to each folder
3. In that folder, I select the MLV FILE, and then go to file/Open Command Prompt/Open Command Prompt
4. It opens with that file path connected to the .MLV File
5. Type in: mlv_dump --dng mXX-XXXX.MLV (in the images below I'd type in m15-1026.mlv)

All of the other files are fine, it's just this one shot. I've included a screen grab. I think this happens if while recording you accidentally zoom in. Curious if there was a way to fix this file.

So, here's a screen grab of what I'm talking about.



The files show various file sizes and seem to have date but raw2cdng will not recognize them. Any thoughts?

So, I purchased Andrew Reed's ebook on shooting raw with the Mark3, and I'm excited to try this out.

I'm trying to install ML aug2nd build. Here's what I've done.

1. Formatted the card to ExFat  (64gig sandisk 45MB/s).

2. I put the Alpha for the MarkII (ml-5d3-113.fir with the accompanying ML folder) onto a SD card.

3. Put the SD into the camera, turned on, full battery, all that.

4. Updated firmware. Went through some percentages and the screen went black, came back and I had ML on my camera.

5. Turned off camera.

6.  Went and got the August 2nd build. Grabbed the zip file from google drive, unzipped.

7. Plugged my SD card back into my computer. Deleted everything except for the Cannon folders.

8. Put the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir, the ML folder and the autoexec.bin file onto the card.

9. Placed card back into camera.

10. Ran the firmware update. And I got a screen saying the following:

Firmware Update Program
Update file
cannot be found.
Please check the memory
card and reload the
battery and try again.


Not sure what to do from here. I've tried the method on Cinema5d's site and got the same results.

Thoughts?

This is more of a frames per second question than anything else.

So I could be using a Canon 5dmII with the Magic Lantern hack, or a Sony FS100 where the frame rates can be selected manually. At the end of the day, the file on the card shows the footage as being shot in a 23.976 capture. You with me?

Now, lets say for instance I shot a sequence at 3fps. The way the footage comes off the card is like this:

So even though I'm shooting at 3fps, I'm actually getting 24 frames with many of the frames repeated to get me down to 3fps. Still tracking?

My question is how do you go about REMOVING the repeated frames so the footage can be remapped to an actual 23.976 time line.

Obviously, if I'm shooting at 3fps and I do this the footage will be very much sped up, but of course, if you're doing a dangerous stunt (like a car driving by a person's hand in the film Brick) you don't want the mustang driving past at 40mph, you film it slower and then speed it up. I have no idea how to do this when the footage is stored in a 24fps wrapper of sorts.

The same (and more relevant to everyday shooting) question is for filming at 22fps to then speed up to 24 for fight scenes, which is one of the many reasons to get magic lantern.

After getting Magic Lantern on my 5dmII, I was searching for HDR video examples and came across this test

I'm looking to understand the FPS control better. I've read the manual on this, but it appears that you can achieve 24fps HDR footage   (so filmic!) I'm guessing the footage needs to be shot in 48fps and then converted to 24fps. However when I film in that mode, the footage is (of course) imported as 23.976 footage. This whole process is a bit perplexing to me. Is there any resources or anything anyone can do help me understand this amazing feature more?

I just donated/installed the newest version of the Magic Lantern Firmware.

After turning my live view back on (which took me a min to figure out how to do that again...) I'm having one little annoying issue.

After I power the camera down and remove the CF card, the camera will not power back on until I remove and re-insert the battery.

Full Disclosure: I'm waiting at least 5 seconds before pulling the card out after the camera powers down.

Any thoughts?
