Raw Video / 5D Mark III 1.1.3 - Random Audio Dropoffs
« on: December 11, 2016, 11:27:36 PM »
Hey folks, just wanted to see if anyone was having similar problems to mine. I've been recording RAW to Lexar 1066x cards well within the limits of the write speed of both the card and the CF bus on the camera, however it seems that almost at random, ML will not record sound on my clips.

I performed a test today, recording 5 second clips over and over, then converting them with raw2cdng (Windows 10) and uploading to Davinci Resolve, and random clips will not have any audio recorded. Others record just fine. I have the 2.0 RAW module turned on as well as the mlvsound module on and can't figure out what's wrong. If anyone has a solution, please let me know!

General Help Q&A / Locking Shutter Speed with Auto ETTR
« on: December 09, 2016, 05:51:51 AM »
Hey guys, just picked up a 5D Mark III and LOVE it! Magic Lantern (1.1.3) is some incredible software. Everything is going perfect except for one issue - I've been using Auto ETTR to ensure proper exposure while shooting, however, and this is just based on the experimenting I've done the past few days, it seems when I use Auto ETTR the aperture stays the same while the ISO and shutter speed are the ones that change.

Since I'm shooting at 24fps with a 180 shutter, I wanted to know if there was any way to set up Auto ETTR to only change aperture and ISO, leaving the shutter angle unchanged? If anyone knows a solution, please let me know  :)

Raw Video / 5D Mark III ML RAW vs BMPCC (Dynamic Range, noise, usability)
« on: November 21, 2016, 04:17:18 AM »
Been trying to find relevant information for this. I'm a BMPCC user who loves the image and dynamic range coming from the sensor. My only issue comes from low light performance which is notoriously awful. That's got me looking towards something like a 5D mk iii with Magic Lantern that, on top of low light capability, has less noise at higher ISOs than my BMPCC (which falls apart when you push 2 stops past 800ASA) and as a small bonus: the mic preamps sound better than the BMPCC's.

I just had a few questions for anyone with experience using the 5D:

Is dual ISO reliable enough to compensate for the 5D's default dynamic range deficit (13 stops on BMPCC vs 11 stops, ~15.6 w/ dual ISO)?
How do you feel about the sensor noise in 1:1 crop mode while recording RAW?
Can you record audio while using dual ISO or crop mode?
How do you feel about the noise in shadows when underexposed/the highlight roll offs while clipping?

I've fallen in love with RAW, and my only gripe is the fact it doesn't have the full dynamic range of celluloid yet. Anyone who can spare shed on light on this, I'd really appreciate it!  :)

Post-processing Workflow / RAW 1080p Upscale vs. 720p Downscale
« on: February 06, 2016, 01:18:07 AM »
Hey guys, been testing out the best workflow for ML on my 70d. It's fantastic though the bus speed has my resolution set at 1504x630 at 2.39:1 to utilize the most of my lateral focal length. Though it makes for an awkward position for scaling in post.

Upscaling to 1080p seems to give more issues for my footage in regards to debayering and aliasing, though I've heard that downscaling resolution to 720p could result in some bad moire. It's a given that RAW upscaled will be miles ahead of regular H.264 footage, but which of these two should result in the smoother, sharper image? Thanks  :D
