General Help Q&A / 5D Mark II Bricked?
March 02, 2020, 07:53:51 PM
Email of shame...   Was back from an underwater shoot disassembling a lot of gear.  My feeble excuse.   Until now, camera and CF card were in excellent working order order.

My ML CF card was out of the camera while working on some settings.   Forgot to turn the camera off and inserted the CF card with ML while the camera was on.  Closed the door and the camera stayed off.  Camera would not power up with the CF card inserted.

Initially the camera would power on with full functioning menu without the CF card inserted   I got a "No Card" message when powering ON without the card.   I just could not get the camera to power on with the CF card inserted.

I removed the main battery and the time/date battery and let it sit for several hours.  With no battery installed I flipped the power switch between ON and OFF a few times.

Installed a new/fresh time date battery and a good fully charged main battery.  Nothing.   No power with the CF card installed and now no power either with the CF card holder empty.

To make matters worse the 5D2 just went of service with Canon a few weeks ago.  They are not accepting the camera any longer for servicing that would require parts.  If it only needs a firmware flash, they may be willing to do that.   Too much underwater gear to switch away from the 5D2.

Suggestions (other than eBay)?

I have only recently been trying to record decent sound with raw video on my 5D2.  I have good in-camera results with a BeachTek preamp and various microphones with h.264 files.

When recording at 1856x1044/23.9 fps I seem to be loosing audio sync.   When I down rez to 720p/ 23.9, sync is fine.

Does 1856x1044 with sound overtax the 5d2?

Curious if anyone has experience with various resolutions and sound recording.

Have only recently started to enable audio recording with ML.  For reasons I cannot determine, my ML audio files are slightly longer than the related video file when I bring those clips into DaVinci Resolve.

Canon 5d2.  I use MLVProducer to convert the MLV files with audio to CDNG and wav audio.  FPS override was ON and set to 23.976 in the ML menu (I suspect this could be an issue).  Canon menu set to 24 fps.

After I import the converted video and audio into DaVinci Resolve, the video and audio clips are not linked when I load them into a timeline.  I have to separately add the video and audio files to the timeline.  When I do so, the audio clip is always slightly longer than the video clip.   Most often the audio and video is synced (although the audio clip is longer); sometimes the audio is out of sync.

Just noticed this in the ML user manual under FPS Override:

"Sound Record: by default, ML will disable sound recording when FPS override is enabled; otherwise, audio will go out of sync and recording will stop. Only enable sound if you know what you are doing."   I must confess, am not sure how FPS override should be used.

Using a Canon 5d2. I convert my MLV files with MLVProducer.  Latest builds for both.  MLVProducer generates CDNG files and related WAV. audio files.  However, after conversion, the video and audio are not linked together.

In Resolve, I need to manually drag both the video clip and the related audio clip into the timeline, separately. The ML audio files are always slightly longer than the related video clip (making it more of a pain).  Lots of wasted time when initially setting up timelines compared, for example, to h.264 files with linked video and audio tracks that automatically load into the timeline together.

Is there a quicker manner to bring the Magic Lantern video and audio files into Resolve?

In Resolve's Media page, you can manually link the audio clip to the video clip. But this has to be done one clip at a time.  Useful when syncing the occasional off-sync audio files but not helpful to save time when setting up the timeline.

I was hoping there is a Resolve setting, a MLVProducer setting or a Magic Lantern setting that would automatically link ML video with audio so both would be loaded into a timeline at the same time.

Any fixes or work-arounds?   or just another price to pay for working with raw video?

I use a BeachTek preamp to get better audio quality from my Canon 5D2.   I set to Manual recording in the Canon menu (not AGC) and set the recording level just a notch or two above the lowest level (so the preamp does the work).

Am a little unclear what the Magic Lantern Analog Gain setting is doing.   And how to set it when using the BeachTek.

Is it bypassing the Canon recording level?

Should I be setting it to 10dB or 0 when using an external preamp?

I am having trouble exporting an image sequence from Lightroom to Resolve that Resolve will see as a sequence (clip) and not as several individual still images.

I have typically converted MLV files from my Canon 5d2 to CDNG and imported those CDNG files into Resolve for grading and editing.  With several dark clips, I was not happy with the grading in Resolve and took the CDNG files instead into LightRoom first.  I was able to get a better result in LightRoom (where I am much more adept).   I sync'ed those edits to all the images and exported all the images out of LR as highest quality JPEGs (they are sequentially numbered).

When I try to import the folder into Resolve 12.5, the images appear as stills in the Resolve media pool and NOT as a clip/sequence.   Any advice on the fix?

Improper exporting from LightRoom?

Media setting somewhere in Resolve that I am missing?

Running DV Resolve 11 just fine on an older Windows 7 machine (processor seems to keep up well; no speed issues).   Any views on whether the computer will likely be able to handle a version of Resolve 12?

Also curious whether 12 will provide me with any relevant benefits based on my use/workflow.

My summary workflow:  MLV files from 5d2; convert to CDNG via MLVProducer (love it); import CDNG to Resolve (usually with a LUT in the project settings); quick exposure fixes and grading; Render for final output (I typically do NOT use any other editing software).

Will Resolve 12 provide any meaningful quality or performance enhancements for this very simple CDNG raw editing?

thanks all.
