Share Your Photos / Teal-orange look
June 14, 2022, 01:54:11 PM
Hi folks!
I have been away from color grading for some time now.  :D I need a bit of advice from you guys on what could be impoved in this screenshot taken from color graded footage on davinci resolve. I find for instance that the skin tone is a bit too orangy to start with.
The aim is to attain that teal-orange filmic look used in blockbuster movies for a action-drama short film I am working on.

Raw Video Postprocessing / Davinci wide gamut
May 31, 2022, 06:20:49 AM
Hi folks!

Does anyone know how to color grade a cinemaDNG footage in davinci wide gamut with the plugin Look Designer 2.4 in resolve? I wonder if color space transform is needed in combination with the plugin.

Hi,

I want to build a budget-friendly home color grading studio with 2 monitors, one of which is the preview monitor in 1080p or 1440p. I have been looking for some benq and eizo models but most seem to have problem with compability with video cards (decklink cards) which I intend to use to get clean 10 bit 4:4:4 signal while color grading. I haven't found any solution in forums even after many compability complaints there I haven't found any solution to these.
My budget for the preview monitor is 2k-2.5k US dollars and for the other monitor used to timeline, editing and scopes below 1k US dollars. I need my preview monitor to have true 10-bit display, 3d-LUT, good black levels for professional use.

Q1: Is the uncompressed/lossless 14-bit raw cinemaDNG obtained from say MLVapp a 4:4:4 RGB or a 4:4:4 YUV signal?

Q2: Do you guy know anyone who has managed to make a specific brand of monitor to work on the decklink?

Hi,

I wonder what the exact workflow setting I should follow to color grade 14-bit RAW cinemaDNGs in ACES and linear in After Effects primarily, if not in davinci.

This was my previous workflow in non-ACES environment:
1- Set AE to 32 bpc and working space to rec 709.
2- Import cinemaDNG in AE via adobe camera raw. Select cinelog-C and fix WB, camera profile, remove nosie and sharpen and select correct lens profile. Nothing else.
3- In AE on top of footage apply colorIO plugin and set input to cinelog-C and output to arri logC film matrix.
4- adjust exposure, saturation, vibrance, IR pllution etc.
5- apply filmconvert or via opencolorIO plugin a 3d LUT such as kodak 2383

If I want to work with ACES what should be changed in each step of my workflow?

Hi, I can't seem to find any tutorial on how to make 3x crop mode work on 5d3 in higher resolutions than 1080p. Anyone?

Hi,

Can someone explain what's the difference between the different selections in the submenu of False color in the nightly build on 5d3v1.2.3?
I am refering to Marshall, SmallHD, etc...

Is the false color through the viewfinder accurate?

Hi folks!

Here is a short film, which is in Swedish with English subtitles. It shows how vunerable it becomes for a youth to be dragged into the crime world if falls into some social problems and at the same time is surrounded by bad friends.

https://vimeo.com/258837680

Let me know what you guys think about the color grading, DP work, etc, especially taking into account that it is my first short film and first davinci work, apart from a visual effect (done in AE). :D
The work took me two months with 1-3 people behind the scene.

I think I'll be leaving the AE world however some claim that AE leads to better picture quality than davinci, is that true?

Hardware and Accessories / Powerbank
February 22, 2018, 06:44:01 AM
Hi,

I need to know if anyone of your guys are using a powerbank with a coupler or some other solution to power your 5d mark iii.
All my batteries have cracked (probably due to overheating) so I am looking for another alternative than using batteries. Any suggestions?  :)

Hardware and Accessories / External monitor
December 03, 2017, 03:54:44 PM
Hi,

I am using a 5D mark III (firmw. 1.1.3) and want to buy the most stable external monitor for my gimbal dji Ronin m axis.

I have thw following to choose from but haven't found enough info from the forum if I can record in RAW to my CF-card:

Lilliput 5D-II/O 7 "

Aputure VS-2 FineHD or any other from aputure such as aputure VS-3 or VS-5

SmallHD AC7

Among these  which features do not work with these monitors? By that I mean, histogram, cropmarks, etc.

Share Your Videos / Fashion video for HayaH
May 23, 2017, 04:57:09 PM
Here is one of my latest videos filmed with 5d3 1.1.3. at 48fps for a swedish fashion firm hayah.se.
I don't know about you guys but I find 48fps too look nicer in terms of attaining natural sharpness and colors than 24fps. It's only too bad that I only could get 6-8 seconds at a time on 48fps override.

General Help Q&A / Picture style under Expo
May 23, 2017, 04:24:41 PM
Hi,

I wonder if the picture style under ML's Expo affects the RAW recording or doesn't come with it regardless of which picture style I choose.

Post-processing Workflow / Comparison at 720p
December 01, 2016, 11:09:08 PM
This might be a silly question but If I intend to render a filmed footage to 720p and upload it on Facebook (which accepts max 720p) what is the best to do. I want to preserve as much detail as possible even though I know that Facebook isn't the best place to upload CC-ed ML footage to. But due to the spreading features and the larger audience I seem to have no other choice, for now. Linking from Youtube does not result in the same amount of audience as uploading to FB.

How do I go forward:

1) record in 1080p and then in the render settings downscale to 720p.

2) record in 1080p edit in 720p and render at 720p.

3) render at 1080p and then with a software convert to 720p.

4) record at 720p and edit and render it.

Post-processing Workflow / AE: missing frames
July 01, 2016, 08:29:12 AM
Hello folks,

I've solved a problem that occurs while filming at higher resolutions in RAW than 1080p such as in other aspect ratio than 16:9, such as 2.39 or 2:67 or 2.35:1 in 2560 pixels in width.
While importing the cDNG into AE an warning occurs claiming that frames are missing. There is a plugin called RE-flex Morph that solves this problem. Here is a video explaining how it's done in After Effects.

I've tested it on CC 2015 and it works amazingly well.

Hi folks!

Since my aim is to create docs with ML here is my first ever filmed video in ML. It is interview-based program filmed by me in Gothenburg (in Swedish).
Sorry that it doesn't have any subs but would be very helpful to get any feedback on its picture quality and other tips from our experts here. :)

Post-processing Workflow / Dual iso for MLV
January 19, 2016, 06:18:29 PM
I've noticed that I get to much noise in my footages that are filmed in low light due to the lack of light here in the cold winter in Sweden. :D
A solution that I came across here is using dual iso. However, I have tried to download, install and use several plugin but haven't succeeded in post-editing my dual iso footage. There are plenty of bugs and complications.

The workflow I use is converting my MLV to cDNG using raw2cdng 1.6.5. For there I don't know how to edit my dual iso footage. I use win 7 on a 5d3 firmware 1.1.3.
I use Lr, then AE and for cutting/editing I use Pr in the end of my workflow. I need to edit dual iso on thousands of DNG images not a few RAW images.

Raw Video Postprocessing / Optimize my hardware
December 15, 2015, 05:47:10 PM
HI,

I have a PC desktop and want to optimize it for two aims: 1) Optimize Pr CC 2015 while working with cDNG files; 2) Decrease the render time

My motherboard (Z87-G45) allows me to double RAM memory (from my currently 16 GB to 32GB), create raid 0 (with several SSD disks), add a graphic card (an extra Asus GeForce GTX 760) with bridge.

Due to my limited budget I need to prioritize on optimizing the Pr CC so that the software don't freeze which it does while editing 10-15 min long cDNG videos. I want to remove this problem. Therefore, my question is what should I optimize for this aim? :)

Hi,

I have edited a 14 min long video (cDNGs footage) in Pr CC 2015. I used the DnxHD codec 444 1080p 24fps for the rendering using Media Encoder CC 2015. It took almost 8 hours for the render to complete. I tried uploading it to youtube and it failed to be processed.

What codecs are the best to use for rendering bearing in mind that I want to preserve most quality as possible.

Thanks in advance

Hi!

I have filmed an interview footage with canon 600d/T3i (latest version of magic lantern nightly builds).
When I convert the raw footage (.MLV file) to either .raw then to DNG, or directly to .dng files with MLVBrowseSharp or RAWanizer, I either get a dng folder with no dng files at all or only a few dng files, although I am supposed to get serveral thousands.

I don't understand what seems to be the problem. I do not have the opportunity to re-film the interview since it was done on a trip and the interviewed person is no longer with me.
This is really frustrating, I really need some help here.

Thanks in advance,
Ibrahim
