I wanted to take some astronomical shoots of constellation Orion using Bulb and Intervalometer. My cam is a EOS 6D with latest ML-firmware (self-compiled). I switched the Camera to Bulb-Mode for some 50s-pics. I told the Intervalometer to take a picture every 60s. That should be enough für the 50 second bulb pictures. Than I told the intervalometer to be triggered by a picture.
I started the sesson with my remote control Canon RC6. But the only sucess, I had, was a never ending bulb-picture.
Isn´t it possible to trigger the intervalometer using a wireless remote control?

By the way for those, who are interested in: Maybe qou know, I paint the constellations in another way than usual ( https://sternenkarten.com/2019/12/27/kstars-clines/ ). My constellation lines are now intergrated in kstars.

Running openSUSE Tumbleweed here.

It´s a couple of years ago, that I worked with dualiso-files on my old 600D. If I remember right, I didn´t have big problems to get this running. Now I did some dualiso-shoots with my 6D. But trying to decode them with cr2hdr didnt´t succeed. I got an error: dcraw could not open this file
But opening this dualiso-file with dcraw dirctly results in a ppm. that means, dcraw can open the file.
So I´m wondering, what´s going in here?

First a screenshot from what I did:

https://seescho.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/cr2hdr.jpeg

Next try: I cloned MagicLantern unified from git and compiled it for the 6D with success. I loaded the new version to the SD-Card of the 6D, initialized the dualiso-modul and took anoter dualiso-shoot. I tried to decode the dualiso-file with the new compiled cr2hdr, but the result was the same: dcraw could not open this file

Now I downloaded cr2hdr in it´s windows-version from ML-Website. I started cr2hdr.exe with wine. the result was fine. The dualiso-file was decoded successfully.

I don´t understand, why the linux-version is not running.

Some hints, where I have to look for the error?

MLV-App did a big part of the work in this picture. Without processing with MLV-App, I didn´t get any details:

Some years ago (May 2013), I took some shots of the planet Saturn. It was one of the first times, I experimented with ML-raw for my astronomical shootings. Now, I searched for these records, because I wanted to develop them new. But I didn´t find them anymore. I guess, they get lost with an harddisk-crash, I had in 2013. (After this crash I bought some external backup-drives for my data)

The video-files doesn´t exist anymore, but I found the resulting pictures, stacked from these records. And with these pictures, I did an comparition on the planet Saturn:
ML raw-video vs. mov-video

Here in "Meine kleinen Sternenkarten" you can see this comparition with the technical-data: https://seescho.wordpress.com/2017/03/05/saturn-vergleich-zwischen-rohvideo-und-fullhd-video/
The text is in German. But I wrote an english version on flickr: https://flic.kr/p/RrJyuB

I promised, to show more of the stuff, I use ML for:

https://seescho.wordpress.com/24-august-2016/

You can see  panos of the starry sky. If you click onto the last pano, you can see it in its original resolution of 7500 x 7500 px.

Stichingprogram was Hugin, Stackingprogram was deepskystacker. For the recording I used the intervalometer-function of Magic Lantern: 10 pictures with 30 seconds exposure time.

General Development / lua_fix and 600D [solved]
April 17, 2016, 10:31:01 AM
Wanted to look into lua_fix, but compiling this branch results in a memsize of autoexec.bin, which seems to be a little bit too high for 600D to boot. Can it be, that the bench- and selftest-modules arent merged into branch lua_fix?

I wanted to compile ML, but the modules fail to compile. ML-core compiles fine. Happens on both, 600D and 6D and happens with all modules. Latest source-code ML-unified.

Last time, I compiled, was about a year ago, without problems.

What did I change in this year:
1. last year OpenSuse 13.1 64bit, now OpenSuse Leap 42.1 64bit
2. last year compiling in main sytem, now compiling in a virtual machine
3. last year compiling system-language= german, now system-language=english

Using gcc-arm-none-eabi-4_9-2015q1, same than last year.

I don´t know, where i should start searching the fault.

I wanted to share with you, why ML helped me, shooting the solar eclipse.

These are some of the pics, I´ve taken.

I was at work and had no possibility, to use a tripod. And thinghs had to go very quick, no time to optimize something. That´s, where the raw-histogram came in. One shoot, one correction of shutter speed in M-mode, that´s what I had time for. All other shoots had to fit.  ML made this possible.

The time_indicator make nonsense on my 600D. Esapsed time is displayed over other data. I remember, this problem existed some time ago.  I thougt, it was fixed, but it it seems not be fixed. (I don´t use mov-video very often, so I didn´t notice it). So I searched a bit and found, that this is fixed for 5DIII. So I have 2 questions:

1. Can this fix (in bitrate-5d3.c) easily be ported to  other cameras?
2. In bitrate.c I see: FEATURE_NITRATE. What does that FEATURE_NITRATE mean. What is it for?

One last pic from my astronomical shoots, using mlv-video: Mars

https://seescho.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/bf_0062.jpg

Technical data:
GSO-RC 10Zoll f8 on AZ-EQ6GT
Converter 5x, resulting focal lenght of the sytem: 10m
Canon EOS600D

MLV-video crop-mode
1/33s, ISO3200
video lenght ca. 3min

decoding video to dngs with mlv_dump
decoding dng to tiff with dcraw (4 color interpolation)
stacking with autostackert 10% from 5500 frames
wavelet-sharping with registax6
post-processing with darktable.

I never had such a result, using a simple mov-video, because, using mov, I´m stacking and sharpening to much compression-artifarkts. This is no problem for a full-HD-video, but it is a problem, if I want to use 1:1 crop mode with high amplification (ISO) and maybe underexposed. MLV-video is raw-video without compression but with much noise at high-iso. But this kind of noise I can eleminate through the stacking.

General Development / Wanted: temperatures from your cams
December 25, 2013, 08:16:45 PM
Introduction

MagicLantern show temperatures, which are metered somewhere in the camerabody. In canon-firmware, these temeratures are called efic_temp, so maybe they are metered on the efic_chip. These efic_temp-values are raw values, which have to be converted to Celsius or Fahrenheit for to know, what they mean. This convertion is done by MagicLantern.

For the convertion, a mathematical function is needed. And tests are needed to find out this function. These tests have to be done for all types of camera, because it is hardly probable, that all cameras show a steady behaviour.

There are two sorts of tests, which can be done

1.
You can meter the temperatures in the camera-body with a infrared thermometer. With these temperatures and the corresponding efic_temps, you can develop a function. Done!
A little problem is, that not so many guys own an infrared thermometer, I guess. And when you have such a thermometer, where exactly in the camerabody do you want to meter the temeratures?

2.
If you take a picture, a temperature is written into exif-data. I don´t know, where the temperature-sensor is located, canon uses for the exifs. Maybe, it is the efic_temp-sensor, maybe it is another one. But no matter what sensor it is, the temperature-values are in the exifs. And it is much easier to extract these temperatures from the exifs, than metering temperatures with a thermometer, which you don´t have.

So I decided to use the second methode with the exifs to find out the convert-functions. But I have only a nice little 600D. For this camera I can do this test. But for all other cameras, I need your help.

How can you help testing

1. preparation

1.1 Take a piece of paper and write down the camera-name and the firmware-version, you have.
1.2 Write down, which ML-build you use during the test

2. testing

2.1 Turn on your camera in video-mode and start recording a normal mov-video to heat the camera
2.2 While recording, push the shutter release from time to time, to capture a CR2- or jpec-pic.
2.3 In the debug menue, you can see the camera-temperatures.
2.4 Write down Celsius (if available) and raw-temperature in the moment, you take a picture.
2.5 I at least need exif-temperatures from 20°C to 60°C to be able to work out accurate converting-functions.
2.6 The video-lenght will be 30 minutes, maybe more to get enough temperature-values.

3. test finished

3,1 Download the pictures to your harddisk
3.2 Extract the exif-temperatures from these pictures
3.2.1 On linux you can do this in a terminal: exiftool -CameraTemperature *.CR2
3.2.2 On windows and mac, I don´t know, how to do this
3.3 Write down these exif-temperatures with the corresponding ML-temperatures, you have listed before.

4. Contributing

4.1 Show your measurements here in this thread.
4.2 Write down the ML-temperatures and the corresponding exif-temperatures. Follow this form:
4.3 raw-temperature     Celsius (if available)     temperature extracted from the exif-files
4.3 Use code-tags for your list

And the results?

The functions, created with your help, will be used to show more accurate temperatures in ML.

Why do I want to do this testing-stuff?

Easy to say:
I´m using raw-video for my astonomical shootings. And to are sure, saturn is and stay in focus, I regard the camera-monitor. But it don´t make me happy, what I see there:

0 minutes: Start recording: All is fine, temperature normal, 10°C
3 minutes: temp grows, expected behavior
5 minutes: next video, 40°C and temperature grows
6 minutes: 50°C, ML-temperature warning is coming
8 minutes: 60"C, ML-warning becomes red!
20 minutes: 70°C, I begin suffering from nerves
25 minutes: 75°C, I need a beer
30 minutes: 80°C, I need more alcohol to endure the pain regarding the camera-temperatur

I want my liver to stay healthy. So I don´t want to see this 80°C on the display. 60°C would be enough, especially because exiftool tells me, this 80°C are in reality only 60°C.  :)

General Development / pull-request
December 15, 2013, 11:09:41 PM
Alex, you wrote in pull request #302:

"I mean, for this minor change I'd like to merge a single change. Look at the recent merges (10 commits for a tiny change, sometimes going back and forth). Would make things easier when looking back in history."

There is a little thing, I don´t understand:

I have a bitbucket-repo with a fork of magiclantern. I clone this repo to my harddisk to test some magiclantern-stuff. Now I find something beeing worth to be changed. I change this on the harddisk, compile and test it. Then I sync my repo with magiclantern-repo. Done this, I commit the change on my hd and push it to my repo. Then I create a pull request to magiclantern.
In this tiny change, you talked about, there is only one file changed, the file, I did a pull-request for. Both repos were synced before this pull request. But there are 10 commits, which are merged. I don´t understand, why this 10 commits are merged and not only my pull request.

If I want to create a pull request to magiclantern, have I to delete my repo first and then create a new one before doing this pull-request to prevent these 10 commits.

Feel free to give me an advice.

General Help Q&A / 600D: ETTR and Expo limits reached
November 10, 2013, 07:01:17 PM
Hi

I enabled ETTR for my 600D for playing a bit with. It seems to work quite well. But there is one thing, I don´t understand:

If I shoot a scene under normal light conditions( ISO 100, 1/60s), which ETTR can calculate, all is fine. Then I´m shooting a very dark sample and ETTR sets ISO and time to max (ISO 3200m 30s). And it tells me: Expo limits reached.

No problem till now.

But all pictures; i try to take from now on (back under normal light conditions) are heavily overexposed and I always get the message: Expo limits reached. I have to set back ISO and exposure-time manually away from the max to normal values for making ETTR work again correctly.

This happens in both, LV and Photo-mode. ML compiled incl. commit b2bcf64

What´s wrong?

Two questions:

1.
Is ist possible to take a silent pic only, if focus is confirmed (simple mode an AF)?

2. How do I disable, that a silent pic ist taken, if I press the star-button?

Feature Requests / bad pixel removing
October 23, 2013, 11:14:05 PM
Add the code from rawtherapee for bad-pixel mapping to raw2dng

Possible to do?
I don´t know. But alex integrated amaze-demosaicing from RT. Maybe, he can do this with bad pixel code too?

Why?
I don´t know another opensource program, which handles the bad pixels as good as rawtherapee. All the dead pixel from the raw pics of my 600D dissapeare. It would be nice, if raw2dng could do this too with such a great success.

And when not?
Than I continue to use RT (only) for bad pixel removing.

General Help Q&A / 600D and MLV: hack error
October 13, 2013, 11:30:14 PM
I enable extra hacks in the raw-rec-module. If I start a record, I get this message on cameradisplay:

hackerror at 0
expected e3a00032, got 0

What´s wrong, what can I do?

There is one thing, I don´t understand:

Recording a raw-video with high resolution (1728 x 1152) in no-crop mode is fine. No problems. Many frames are skipped, but that was expected
Recording a raw-video with the same resolution in crop-mode results in pink frames. Only the first frame is ok, the rest is corrupted. In crop mode, I have to set fps or/and resolution to continous recording for not getting corrupted frames.

Tested with latest sources from TL2.0 and from MLV, global draw was set to off in raw_rec-module.

Why this difference? Has the cpu so much more to do in crop mode?

General Help Q&A / 600D: pink silent pictures
September 22, 2013, 11:02:49 AM
600D, Photo-mode M, no crop, silent pictures simple, Quality raw
TL2.0 compiled 22.9.2013

If I take some single silent pictures, I get a lot of pink pictures.
If I take silent pictures, pressing the shutter release continuously, I get no pink pictures and all is fine.

Why this different behavior?

I load modules raw-rec and dual-iso.
Now I change in module raw-rec the start delay to 0 and allow skipping frames. After shooting down and restarting the camera, the 600D freezes.
This only happens, if I change both settings AND if I have dual-iso loaded. Changing only 1 setting or without dual-iso loaded: no problems.

Compiled for 600D from latest sources of TL2.0. The both modules was loaded but not enabled. The camera was in M-Mode.

I cannot test this with ML-sources, because I cannot compile ML at the moment due to an error

Compiling ML for 600D from latest ML-sources (including commit 46b317a) results in this error:

General Help Q&A / dual_iso with 600D error: pgm width
August 15, 2013, 10:03:58 PM
I make a testshoot with dual_iso 100/1600. Using cr2hdr, a dng-file is not generated and I get this error:

I do not find this error string in cr2hdr.c. The tmp.txt looks like this

Hallo

I want to compile magic lantern for my 600d with modules enabled, but my camera seems not to be very happy with my work. Let´s have a closer look to that, what I have done:

I´m working on Linux OpenSuse 12.3. Using ML with the zip-files of 1% runs like a charm. But now I see a little problem, which I would like to test out, changing the source code ( I´m no programmer, but I´m not afraid of doing some simple things...). So I cloned ML to my harddisk

hg clone -r unified https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern

Than I copied makefile.user.default to makefile.user and did some changes in makefile.user. See the part of makefile.user, I´ve changed:

# Build configuration - untested and debug stuff handy for devs
CONFIG_PYMITE       = n
ifndef CONFIG_RELOC
CONFIG_RELOC        = n
endif
CONFIG_TIMECODE     = n
CONFIG_PTP          = n
CONFIG_PTP_CHDK     = n
CONFIG_PTP_ML       = n
ifndef CONFIG_GDB
CONFIG_GDB          = n
endif
CONFIG_GDBSTUB      = n
CONFIG_PLUGINS      = n
ifndef CONFIG_CONSOLE
CONFIG_CONSOLE      = y
endif
CONFIG_DEBUGMSG     = 0
CONFIG_CCACHE       = n
CONFIG_PICOC        = n
CONFIG_TCC          = y
CONFIG_MEMCHECK     = n
CONFIG_MODULES      = y
CONFIG_TINYPY       = n

The next step was a nice make clean, followed by a make 600D. Some warnings appeared, but the autoexec.bin was generated. Now I went to modules/raw_rec and did make clean and make.

I copied autoexec.bin from /platform/600D.102 to ML2.3. Than I created a folder MODULES in ML and copied raw_rec.mo into this folder. Now I took the latest MAGIC.SYM from the zip-file of 1% and copied it into the folder MODULES (didn´t find another MAGIC.SYM...)

I copied this whole stuff to my sd-card. But inserting the card into the 600D makes my camera blinking. three times long, three times short, three times longs, three times short and so on, till I remove the akku. I don´t know, what i´m doing wrong. By the way, compiling this whole stuff without modules enabled works without problems on my camera.

Where is my fault?

Hallo

Last night I recorded some nice raw-videos of saturn for astrostacking (raw, 720x480px, 5x-crop, fps-override 30fps). The last video stopped recording, because the SD-card was full. raw2dng cannot decode this RAW, I think, because organisation-data or something like that at the end of the .RAW are missing now.

I think, it would be useful to stop recording automatically, shortly before memory card is full. Is it possible to implement this?

Hallo

Using this new version ([600D] New Memory.zip) for capturing 14 Bit raw silent pictures give great results. But I see a regression, I don´t like very much. Let me explain.

Using the older version ( [600D] EasyCutLvrec.zip), I can do continous raw-shooting. that means, I make the half-shutter sticky, select silent pictures burst mode, press the shutter half and go drinking a nice bottle of bear. My 600d writes 16 dng-silents in raw-quality to a buffer or a cache (don´t know) in about 1 second. After this, the silents are written to SD-card (in about 18 seconds). If that is finished, the next 16 pictures are captured. That ist something like continous silent raw shooting with hickup. If I come back from my bottle of bear, the sdcard is full with nice pictures.

Using this new version ([600D] New Memory.zip), the continous shooting doesn´t run any more. Same setup like before. Capturing runs pretty good. But writing to sd-card is limited to 2 pictures now, if I have the half shutter sticky. ML tells me: saving cancelled. that´s not so good, if I want to drink a bottle of bear (or for astronomical stacking, I want to test this silent-raw-mode for) :)

General Help Q&A / moovie bitrate
January 30, 2013, 11:50:49 PM
Hallo

Please have a look at this here:

picture 1: CBR 1x

edgar@linux-pusc:~/testordner/test4/exif> exiftool MVI_5869.MOV | grep "Y Cb Cr Sub Sampling"
Y Cb Cr Sub Sampling            : YCbCr4:2:2 (2 1)

edgar@linux-pusc:~/testordner/test4/exif> exiftool MVI_5869.MOV | grep "Avg Bitrate"
Avg Bitrate                     : 42.3 Mbps

picture 2: CBR 3x

edgar@linux-pusc:~/testordner/test4/exif> exiftool MVI_5870.MOV | grep "Y Cb Cr Sub Sampling"
Y Cb Cr Sub Sampling            : YCbCr4:2:2 (2 1)

edgar@linux-pusc:~/testordner/test4/exif> exiftool MVI_5870.MOV | grep "Avg Bitrate"
Avg Bitrate                     : 90.5 Mbps

I have 2 questions:

1.
I thougt, subsampling of fullhd is YUV420. But in the exif-tag I can see YUV422. What is correct, 420 or 422?

2.
A little clip with CBR 1x shows a bitrate of 42,3 Mbps.
The same situation recorded with CBR 3x shows a bitrate of 90,5 Mbps. Why is this only 90,5 Mbps and not 42,3 Mbps x 3 = 126,9 Mbps?

General Help Q&A / canon digitalzoom
January 22, 2013, 09:46:31 PM
Hallo

I wanted to record a Full-HD-Video with Canon digitalzoom. That runs, but only with 3x-zoom. I cannot set bigger zoom-values anymore. Starting the camera with ML disabled, I can choose from 3x to 10x, starting with ML enabled I only have 3x.

What am I doing wrong?

Hello

I played a bit with still pics and I have a short question: What depends the speed, silent pictures are captured, on?

ML2.3 with my EOS600d gives me the possibility to shoot 1.5 pictures/second in burst mode (SDHC-Card class10 with 95MB/s). I tried tons of options in Canon and ML-Menue, but I didn´t succeed to get more frames per second. Is there an option, which make it possible to get more yuv422-frames per second?

Great piece of software, this ML
