I am sure i have missed something obvious but how do you get rid of that annoying crop mode x10 halfshutter "aid" from getting in the way whenever I am about to take an image?

The 5d mark iv has bracketing along with exposure compensation.

A pretty unusable implementation all the way back from 1989, then yes.

Let me remind you that this is just menus. When we will have RAW video, you'll be able to buy 2 of them for todays price.

I would be pretty ecstatic to get just the core photography features like bracketing. I would instantly buy one that day, but until then sticking with mk3.

Would love to hear specifically which ML functions you are missing switching from 5D3 to R5. A genuine, non-rhetorical question.

I'm 5D3 1.23 ML user and I find it invaluable for exposure bracketing, and also bracketing with flash enabled with 2s delay. You may ask why would I want to do that, and basically for real estate work you really really really really want to be able to do that without manually tweaking settings like 5-6 times per single composition and every time knocking camera off by a pixel or two. Even basic bracketing is such as guesswork with any camera including R6. If you are lucky guesstimating your brightest exposure (or else you take a spare unasable blown out frame) you typically don't go down enough leaving those blown highlights even at -5EV or so. Histograms are useless, screens are small so until you load images to LR you don't even know you have a window or sky still blown out. So guess what I'm still taking 5D3 to jobs as the main cam and R6 and 5Ds are backups. 5ds is pretty inevitable for high res work and I just dialed in bracketing to 5 frames every 1 2/3 stops. It sounds excessive and it is but at the same time, it can be not enough, and that is also true to R6 if you stick with 3 frames 2EV apart.
Other that that I use RAW histogram, focus red overlays and digital focus range display all of which canon still doesn't quite want to give us in full in all modes.
I don't really care about RAW video on the 5D3 anymore since getting the R6. that is so so much better. R6 RAW would be nice, and mkII sort of does that once you get the NINJA V+ recorder. So really the focus IMHO are now all about photography features.

I find the former feature so important that I am rather going to jump to another brand if I need to rather than stick with Canon once 5D3 gives up. I believe Z9 has more of this functionality (the flash part), but not smart auto bracket limit feature unless I'm mistaken. I can adapt that 16-35mm lens and buy GODOX trigger for any new system so if there is one that does all that natively please let me know.

Just to be on the safe side what is the max safe temperature for 5D3 please? I had over 47C today in just a couple min so want to play it safe.

I'm just trying to figure out a reasonable higher res workflow. Full HD from nightly works fine and is a big improvement over H264, and in my case keeping 16mm as close to 16mm is very important. I know the answer is R5 but hopefully this will still keep on developing.

It does and it doesn't:

I have regular 2018 ML on my mk3 (x2) and bought Weebill S instead of Crane 3S or 2, but they are pretty much the same for connectivity.

To begin with no camera controls worked. I started doing some testing. First I uninstalled ML on 2nd 5D and presto controls were operational. After fresh ML install it was still active. After configuring a few minor options and enabling video it was suddenly gone. It was time to disable things one by one. Virtual Level off did it for me. Controls were back. 2nd one was clearly more customised, so I had to disable focus range display. So it appears any additional display items except histogram are interferring with the gimbal

Perhaps it doesn't matter much anyway. Follow focus is not very effective and behaves very badly with 16-35mm f/4. 100mm macro is a tiny bit better but works in tiny steps which may be both good and very bad depending on the situation. That expensive add on would be the way to go really. So it's just a convenient way to start and stop recording depending how you hold it. It's not that hard to reach the camera itself.

I realise the lack of autofocus is major roadblock for a video beginner such as myself. It's not an issue with wideangle lenses (for example real estate) or at higher f numbers... Luckily the ML RAW makes the 1080p video acceptable for the day.
