You sold me at "NATIVE Pro-Res Playback"

LOL hope you like it!

Write speeds (or any data transmission) aren't constant and depend on a lot of factors you can't control and even vary between cards themselves of the same line. I have a CF San Disk Extreme Pro that will write upwards to a minute at full 14bit ML Raw but my other cards, same model and capacity, come nowhere close varying between 20s - 30s per capture.

But if you want a reliable continuous record then I suggest the 10/12 Bit RAW video experimental build found on the https://builds.magiclantern.fm/experiments.html page for your 70D. On my Mark II, I get continuous record for 24fps @ 12bit but only continuous record for 30fps @ 10 bit. However, even the 10 bit still looks gorgeous, in my opinion - believe me, you're not losing much with the eye test. I'm working on a 10bit project now that I'll be sharing soon the Share forum.

General Chat / Recommendation: VLC Alternative "MPC-HC"
February 21, 2020, 08:19:39 PM
I know VLC is a favorite amongst most tech savy people, especially us that shoot and edit video but I recently discovered MPC-HC (Media Player Classic - Home Cinema)

First thing, it has native Prores playback unlike VLC which is useful on my Windows machine so I don't have to open Premiere to just look at clips.

Second, the File>Properties>Media Info is more detailed than YouTube's stats for nerds. This showed me that the ProRes codec adapts to the framerate of the video. All white papers online are based off 1080/29.97 but I saw a licensed Prores codec device double the bitrate for the same setting with 1080/59.94 video in the Media Info.

Lastly, MPC-HC saved an edit job when I saw "Delay relative to video: -XXXms" in the Media Info for clips shot on a new-to-me handy cam. They played back in sync in VLC and MPC-HC but Adobe didn't compensate for the delay so I had to manually offet the audio in my Adobe sequence. I scratched my head for over a week before discovering this! And it truly saved the job knowing how to compensate for the delay in the sequence which varied for each clip of 4GB/26min max length.

I highly recommend this program for anyone that captures video! MPC-HC (Media Player Classic - Home Cinema)

I think the vertical aspect works for the video. Especially with you adding the frame-in-frame the vertical comes across as deliberate and not just a video that happened to be shot vertical. If you ever make it longer I'd like to see it.

...I always want to shorten the timeline... a couple days after I uploaded a video.

Lol! I started sleeping on it a day or two before uploading and that helped me work the tweaks in. Of course sitting on a perfectly good video another day or two just absolutely bugs me but not as much as wishing I'd made this or that small change before uploading.

From a technical standpoint colors are great, the grade is great, it's shot run and gun, the edit is great.
Maybe consider uploading in 4k just so you get a higher bitrate, I get better details this way (It's def less blocky on pans).
In my opinion, the best thing is that there is a little story, it isn't just b-rolls. It is a wholesome video really.
I ended up watching the whole thing without realizing it. Congrats.

Thank you for the kind compliment! Story telling is something I've been working on so I'm glad it came across to you.

And thanks for pointing out the bitrate because I need to revisit the 2k crop rec build. Like you said, the HD YouTube codec doesn't do it justice and I upscaled from 1080 to 4k some months ago but it looked atrocious lol. So I have downloaded a 2k crop rec build but only played with it 1 day. I think it's ridiculous we have to upload 2k/4k to get a decent bitrate with their vp9 codec.

QuoteNice. Are you using some LUT?
Thanks! In Premiere I use the 'Kodak 5218 Kodak 2383 (by Adobe)' LUT and tweak it to my liking.

QuoteThe issue with this is that it's slow.
Yes, I've learned it's painfully slow, as you already know lol.

QuoteThis is relatively fast in comparison with HEVC and gives a high quality output. If you're really worried about youtube losses, and you have a good internet connection, maybe try to upload a ProRes 422 LT directly.
I'm just now starting to play around with ffmpeg so thanks for the code! I'm happy with my Adobe H.264 settings but I don't always have access to it so this will help in those times. And I'll definitely try the ProRes LT. This video was 368MB variable bitrate and ~480MB constant bitrate so I'll see how it compares to the LT. I'm not scared of large file sizes but it's a tradeoff due to the amount of video I have archived for clients.

QuoteIf you use Premiere, see this plugin: Voukoder.
It encodes VP9, interesting! I'll look into the AV1 as well.

Born 2 Live (Album Version)

Nothing new in my processing or post but I rendered to HEVC(H.265) instead of AVC(H.264) while keeping the same bitrate because of what I read in the wiki article:
"In comparison to AVC, HEVC offers from 25% to 50% better data compression at the same level of video quality, or substantially improved video quality at the same bit rate." Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Video_Coding

I also rendered the file at constant bit rate instead of variable because ALL of the video hosting sites (YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook) re-encode the video anyway so let them re-encode from a constant high bit rate file - just as musicians/record labels do when uploading their music for streaming and digital distribution as a 24-bit wav to be re-encoded as .ogg, .aac, or .mp3 by the hosting site.

Your video is not showing in the post due to music being blocked in this forum's country. I got to it by clicking the Channel name in the top left before it showed "Unavailable"

https://youtu.be/gZ1WEEU7_GY

I love the saturation and the soundtrack was a great choice! And the fact you edited his little "mishap" to the music was a bonus that had me laugh out loud!

And I appreciate the fact that your actual sequence was cine-aspect instead of adding black bars on top of your video. It's the little things.

Great edit and beautiful scenery! Nice camera movements and the movement pace and edit pace accompanied the music very well.

Did you use a nightly build or experimental?
#13
I really like your saturation in the 5D3 vids and it's hard for me to appreciate the other model clips (which I do) in the same thread as the 5D3 lol.

1 and 2 are nice and warm without being red. 3 and 5 are solid night/low light clips. 4 is my absolute favorite!

My favorite thing about ML on my 5D2 is that it captures the texture of objects and while all of your 5D3 clips show that, 4 is the best example of it. The 7D is close but not quite.

What format did you export to?

Simply stunning! Great all around video with edit, color, and music (bonus points for Kanye lol). The water looks amazing!

The mood of the first video is almost overwhelming with the colors, fog, and music! The green really pops in both vids.

Nice footage especially coming from a 5D2. Which build was this shot with? Which route did you go with in Post? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks!

In camera I use the ettr module (Expose to the Right) for the ettr hint on the histogram and have the white balance set to auto.

I adjust exposure and export to Pro Res 422 (resize on export) with the option to NOT use camera matrix and Rec 709 profile. I white balance on the Pro Res in Adobe while color grading.

It also depends on the app used for importing the DNG. I use two different photo viewers, Xee and Lyn. Xee shows the wrong resolution (3016x1080) while Lyn shows the correct resolution (3968x1800) for exactly the same DNG file.

Importing cDNG into Premiere and viewing in Adobe Camera Raw was 3016x1080 (wrong resolution)

Wow, the logistics of getting one shot must be that more difficult with the stitching. How does that work with the subject moving? There was a gentle breeze in the shot and I was none the wiser to the stitching.

Does the EOS M ML view not have a temperature readout? (The Mark II does but depending on the shoot, I have to at least finish the take before giving it a rest a couple minutes)
#24
Very clean video with a cool perspective. How does the long takes affect the EOS M's temperature? Was this the beginning, middle, or end of shooting for that session? (I'm super paranoid I'm going to do permanent heat damage to my Mark II)

@Ilia3101, continued from the 3k thread (https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19336.msg219904#msg219904)

Hmm why does it cut off, what do you mean?

The frame capture of the comment below is 3016x1080, not the full 3968x1800 which I'm only pointing out because cDNG export gave me that exact same frame, 3016x1080, and NOT the full 3968x1800 which I only got via ProRes export without resizing to do so. So for post processing purposes, MLV App did not render the full resolution of the 4k mlv file as cDNG. The HEVC portion of my comment didn't have anything to do with the resolution.

Fantastic resolution! 3968x1800. Unfortunately the top right corner stays dead.
Frame difference, exaggerated

So, what was the trick? Was it fair? :)
