Here's an example

The uncropped 16x9 pics from the 5diii are 5760x3240
I created the 2.55:1 letterbox mask into the same dimensions as a PNG and BMP - though Idk if the center is properly transparent or not with the colorspace so that the image behind it will show up.
So the third pic is already cropped to that dimension -- though I don't want to make a permanent crop beforehand and fit it in. I rather move/shift the original pic up and down behind the letterbox pic and then lop off the top or bottom which goes out of the proportions-- but maybe (hopefully I wouldn't even need to do this if I can set up the project settings to the exact same 5760x3240 size to start with....

I then want to merge them somehow-- so I don't think using some third party deveopment app which requires typing in code will grant this function and/or setup the project in this manner of raster size

I still have yet to figure out the post processing of the pics now.

I have a letterbox PNG with a transparent center (for the still photo taken) and don't know how to apply this matte/mask/padding/picture frame/whatever you want to call into atop of all the pics at once.... and this ImageMagick looks antiquated and very not all that user friendly in regards to downloading and getting it up and running

suggestions??

how??? one click?

I have the free trial of LR and did have the trial for PS

aaaaa what's an app that I could use for a simple one-click batch apply function of adding a transparent center letterbox BMP or PNG atop all these pics?

I do not want a permaneant crop of 16x9 photos into 2.55:1
I want to simply add a letterbox photo on top of the original- save as - and then have the new pic.
In other words, I need a padding, or picture frame border, or layering function?

I've successfully made crop marks for
2.00
2.20
2.55
2.76

see the last post

Now I just need to figure out how to overlay grid lines to each ratio for a rule of thirds version to each.
Any links or points (the name of that function in PS) would be very helpful
With that, I will be done and good to go for the in-camera setups I desire for helping out with framing

Okay with the ML instruction page and a free trial of PS, this is very easy to accomplish

Just generated aspect ratios for the 720x480 demensions via this website https://www.shift-e.net/tools/#!/matte-generator  and then matched the thickness of the black letterboxing accordingly to each of the desired ratios.
Below are:
2.00 Stararovision/Univision
2.20 uncropped Super Panavision 70 large format
2.55 original 1950's Technicolor Anamorphic Cinemascope
2.76 uncropped Ultra Panavision 70 large format

Unfortunately I am unable to figure out how to create transparent gridlines for the rule of thirds to overlay onto these crop marks at the moment-- anybody know of how to do it please say so or link some directions from a video tutorial or how-to webpage

Your welcome. Enjoy!

what is GIMP?

I simply edited 2.67 one that was already made to spec and functioned properly -- edited in Paintbrush and Saved As.... but perhaps simply opening it up in this app automatically changed the .bmp files color specs or something-- or perhaps saving the new edits changed the proper needed setting since this default project settings of this app are different?

I have no idea how to input Canon/ML style color palettes in general or if this app evens can apply such settings. I don't have PS or Lightroom

Here are the two crop marks I have edited but for some reason, they show up blank when selected in camera (the black padding is invisible)

I don't understand what the problem is...

So if someone could help fix these, then Save As, and add the rule of thirds grid lines, I'll be set to go with the two versions.

Same here-- I am looking for a 2.20:1

Basically, I am in search of one clean and another with the rule of thirds gridlines for both 2.55 and 2.20 . Also, the design doesn't need to have a label atop the black bars displaying which ratio it is for either the 2.55 or 2.20 stating (sort of distracting)
If anyone is able to make a quick edit on any of their existing crop marks into these two ratios, and post them here it would be a huge help

Yup, Avid will be very easy.

ImagaMagick looks rather clunky and tedious to get up and running with having to input all that coding... sort of confusing. But you're spot on-- a 'Padding' function is what i'm looking for. So any other app that has the ability to set custom preloaded padding masks for easy alternations to entire folders or batches of selected stills will be great.

Also, any word or discovery of the custom crop marks?? one clean and another with the rule of thirds gridlines for both 2.55 and 2.20 will be perfect. Also, the design doesn't need to have a label design stating 2.55 or 2.20 atop the mask  (sort of distracting)

We're getting close!

correct (which is sad-- can we add this down the line sometime soon ML??) -- which is why I need to discover an efficient app and function to overwrite the mask onto the stills in post and also to find custom crop marks to get me better framed up in that aspect ratio in camera.
I don't have PS... it appears Preview the Photos apps don't have an overlay function for starters-- just straight crop outs... but has anyone noticed the ugly gray display color for the negative space of the images when going into full screen in Photos -- so lame it's not black.

Hello

I'm going to shoot stills and video in both 16x9 modes and simply frame with custom crop marks in camera to get 2.55 and 2.20
2.55 is the original cinemascope aspect ratio as seen in Rebel without a Cause and other 1950s films and recently in La La Land.
2.20 is the aspect ratio of Panavision Super 70 as seen in Lawrence of Arabia and 2001 Space Odyssey

For the life of me I cannot figure out a way to properly edit my own custom crop mark BMP files myself and have them turn out in a working order... Whenever I edit an existing one to either of these two ideal crop margins-- I save the file, add it into the ML SD card folder, it successfully is loaded and becomes selectable in the camera options, but the edited file shows up simply blank ~no black letterbox bars at all.... a normal untouched liveview... effectively adding no crop marks at all.

May someone please be a quick help by creating a 2.55:1 and 2.20:1 custom crop mark file available for download?? I've looked everywhere and simply can't find a single option for either of these two aspect ratios.

Adding one of these two letterbox masks in Avid for both cases are easy and will be no problem at all for the video files. 2.20 is already an available crop right in camera for video, which is amazing but for some silly reason 2.55 doesn't exist and would be so great if ever made possible.

To post process the stills I've created a BMP and PNG to the exact pixel resolution size of the Canon 5Diii's uncropped 16x9 size stills.

So I want to overlay this 2.55 letterbox I've created on top of the stills. I do not want to crop the original 1.78 photos into 2.55  -- I want to put a permanent 2.55 mask over the 1.78 uncropped photos... I can't find a tutorial online how to do this... Which app should I use to overlay a BMP file? My files have a transparent middle for the image area and solid black bars on top and bottom for the mask 2.55 mask. Any tutorial videos or directions will be a great help. I presume PS or Lightroom? Any app that can simply have a present option so I can batch modify 10s-100s at once very swiflty is ideal. I don't want to tinker with all these pics one by one since I'll have already framed with the cropmarks in camera when I'm framing the shots

With that-- I'll be good to go...

It's time for an ML masterclass.
First-time poster and I have 3 issues all related to the same creative goal of using my ML 5DIII as a viewfinder to location scout by taking video and stills in the true cinemascope aspect ratio of 2.55:1.
I am using the magiclantern-Nightly.2018Jul03.5D3123

I'm making a feature with actual x2 anamorphic lenses on the RED DSCM and will be exhibiting a final aspect ratio of 2.55 ala La La Land, Rebel without a Cause, and the original cinemascope films of the 1950s.

Q1) Does anyone have custom crop marks for 2.55??? One with and without the rule of thirds, and even a label stating 2.55 in the black letterbox would be ideal.
While here, also same for  future reference and use- does anyone have 2.20 (large format Super 70mm Panavision ala Lawrence of Arabia and 2001 Space Odyssey)??

I'm basically looking for this but for both 2.55 and 2.20

I am going to use spherical lenses to frame for the equivalent horizontal field of view of the given anamorphic lenses being used. For example) 12mm prime for the HFOV of the 25mm anamorphic and 18mm prime for the 35mm anamorphic. In order words, my location scouts will be for the purpose of framing compositions and not  for replicating stills or footage with the proper DOF.

Q2) My camera is set to Resolution of 1920x720 @1.00X (which is grayed out) and the Aspect Ratio is at 2.67:1.
This is good for shooting video footage since it is the exact aspect ratio and image size captured in-camera before resize/cropping in post to 2.55, BUT... is there a way to create a custom crop and image size when using stills mode with ML??? It is rather absurd to think one can be in movie mode, put on the guide frames for 2.67, have the video resolution and aspect ratio match that same frame size, yet it can't take a still of that vary image at the same size..... doesn't seem all that intuitive. especially when the picture profiles will even carry over yet the stills will always revert back to 16x9.
Bottom line, I don't want to have to go through hundreds 16x9 photos, pick out the best ones and add a 2.55 matte onto each one individually. This would not be a manageable workflow for preproduction. There's gotta be a way!

Q3) On that note, same goes for the video footage-- sure 2.67 is what is captured when shooting in 4:3 mode, but I'm shooting with spherical lenses, (as are the majority dslr shooters) and in 16x9 mode... so why is there a 2.50 mode when that has never been a capture or exhibition format in the history of filmmaking?! Honestly, I always thought the developer just had bad info and accidentally or unknowingly mixed up the original standard at 2.50, when it was always and will forever be 2.55.
So the real question is: is there a way to create and set custom user aspect ratios for the image format of both stills and video? In this case, 2.55 would be 1920x754
It seems like it's always just been a knowledge goof and I'm so surprised it hasn't been corrected since 2.50 has never been and will never be a format.

4). This all brings me to my last headache, which may in fact, be the solution to the user modifications I seek. I just attempted to use the latest experimental 4k crop rec build magiclantern-crop_rec_4k.2018Jul22.5D3123-1

But it errored occured upon restarting the camera after turning on the MLV play, rec, and sound options. Here's the error message...

short beautiful poems

Is there a more stable version out there than this? Has anyone else gotten this problem? Perhaps I simply downloaded incorrectly? -> I reformatted my sd card, dragged the files of this one onto it, did the firmware update, all good, but then it error's when initializing the modules upon the restart.

Regardless, it's not important for me to shoot stills or footage above 1080p for location scouting, yet from what I understand, this experimental build allows for the use of various additional aspect ratios, the higher resolutions can now actually be selectable (none of mine above 1920 have ever been selectable thus far), and crop factors options are not added (the crop rec module isn't listed to be initialized on the normal build).... So let me know if I'm tracking properly with what additional can and cannot be done with the new 4k build to give solutions to aspirations above.

5)--- And also, does this 4k crop build in question also include the reduced 10 and 12-bit options all in the same build or is that hack only available as one or the other type option for users to upload and use?? In other words is it like hey, you can use only one build at a time... the stable nightly build, the 4k crop, or the reduced raw but depth build....I really hope this is not the case cause if I can use whatever combination of crop, resolution, and bit depth, all at once, then that would be like using a real functional cinema style camera!

Please advise
