I had a couple of crashes on my 700D while switching from crop mode to non-crop mode a week or so ago.  I got distracted and didn't save log files or anything but if I can replicate them is that something that you guys are interested in?
In which case, what detail do you want?

From memory I'd switch from crop to non-crop (or the other way around - I can't remember now) and when I exited the ML menus the display would be in the previous mode but frozen and camera unresponsive.  I think I might have had to take the battery out.

Why is there a difference in the write speed between photo and video modes?

My Samsung Evo Plus gets ~47MB/s in video mode but ~68MB/s in photo mode in my 700D.

Is there a CPU overhead in video mode perhaps?  The reason I ask is that it seems like it might be something that can be optimised for performance improvement.

Is there any discussion or development on a >1080p H264 mode?

With the 40MB/s cameras the limitation is SD write speed, so maybe we can pipe the enhanced resolution of crop mode into a compressed file?

I know we will have other bottlenecks in the system (like reading from the sensor, the digic processor compression, etc etc) and probably can't even do 3K, but even 2.5K H264 mode would be spectacular!

(Many thanks for what the devs have already achieved - in asking this I feel like a kid asking for more presents after already opening a bunch of awesome ones already!)

I think I might have stuffed up..  do I need to be in photo mode when I run the module?  I've just run it in there and gotten much better results than I posted before!   ::)

Also, should I replace your previous module with the hard-coded one?  What's the difference?

Also also, with the non-hard-coded one do I have to run it every time I turn on the camera?  or does it remember the best settings from last time?  I tried a couple of tests and couldn't get a straight answer.

Sorry for all the questions...  hopefully I'm helping more than getting in the way  :D

Does anyone know how to enable resolutions above 1792 in crop mode for 700D?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: found it on p55 of the crop_rec thread!

Summary for 700D:

  • Turn on camera and go into movie mode
  • Press the zoom in button (looks like a magnifying glass with a plus sign - on the top-right of the rear panel) - it will show "X1" on the right-hand-side of the screen
  • Press it again - it will show a B&W zoomed in preview with "X5" instead of "X1"
  • Now press the trash button to get into ML menu and now the resolutions above 1792 are available

If you're also using the sd_uhs hack then run that before you go into the zoomed preview mode.  You can run it in there but it seems to take ages for some reason.

The "X5" mode will give a slow B&W preview while recording.  If you hit the zoom in button a third time then you get a fast colour x10 zoom preview and also while recording, which might be good for checking focus while recording?  Anyway, it's worth noting.

Yes, you need a faster card.  You should be able to get at least 30+MB/s write speeds for ML RAW without the SD card hack.  IIRC I was able to record 1600x680 in 10-bit RAW continuously.

Edit 2: ran it again and it seemed to change its mind on which settings were the best?  Not sure if this is just the test results varying normally?  (the BM tests would jump around between about 80-83MB/s so I assume it's just what happens with throughput testing.

If yes, it would be a bargain.

I have Samsung Evo Plus 256Gb microSD card (in the adapter) and 700D running the crop_rec from 10th March.  I am willing to do some testing but haven't got a clue how to install the UHS module, so would need a lot of hand-holding!
I also have a few adapters that I could try if someone is able to help me set it up.

700D + 50mm 1.8 is a great combo, but depends on what you are shooting. 
50mm on this camera is equivalent to 80mm on full-frame, so it's not an all-purpose lens.
If you get a fast card ML with quality setting of 3x can be used, but I've found it's not that much better than 1x quality.
ML RAW works at lower resolutions and is great.

If you want to see image quality, just google for test footage.
