Were you able to get 14bit Lossless to work, and if so, could you tell me what I'm missing?

Maybe it's your method of conversion ?  Your MLV conversion must be able to decode the lossless format.  I'm using MLVFS but there's an updated version that can convert lossless files.  You could try uploading a short clip to see if anyone else can decode it.

The struggle: coming up with project settings that help my outputted video match how it looked in Resolve.

I'm working with the latest beta of Resolve 15 (free version). I spent a bunch of time getting recommendations on how to set up my preferences in Resolve. I tried a few setups but my output is coming out with boosted blown out highlights when I bring them into Premiere. I'm resigned to maybe have to start this from scratch. For this last attempt, I set all the color settings to Arri Log C. I've tried many others.

Anyone have a bullet proof (or bullet resistant) workflow?

Also, in case it's not clear, the files being used in Resolve are the DNG sequences from Switch.

I don't know if this is related, but when I imported my old projects from Resolve 14 to 15 beta, everything was boosted kinda of like you described.  I fixed this by going into the project settings, then to Camera RAW, then select CinemaDNG in the pulldown menu.  See if you have the check box "Apply Pre Tone Curve" checked.  If it is, then uncheck it.  The beta was automatically ticking this box for me.

General Help Q&A / Re: Framing crop mode x 5

Have you tried using 3.5k 1:1 centered 5x option? (near the bottom of the crop mode options) Set that, then change your resolution. It centers the framing for me.

General Help Q&A / Re: SmallHD focus monitor

It's working as intended.  The 1.1.3 firmware will mirror the LCD output on its HDMI.  If you update your camera's firmware to 1.2.3 , and use a 1.2.3 ML build, which will give you clean HDMI output.

You will still have the zoomed in view on your external monitor in 3K mode (which you use for pulling focus), however, you can set it up so you depress the shutter button, and you will see a low framerate preview (that has proper framing!) in your camera's LCD.

Hi there,

Was very excited to install the new experimental crop_rec_4k firmware on my 5D3 (fw1.2.3) with fast Lexar 1066x cards (which have been faultless over the years).

I am not interested in the (heavily compromised) 4K recording options. I've been using Magic Lantern for years now and I am simply excited to be able to shoot high quality 48fps or 60fps with 3x3 binning. But in spite of reading a lot of forum posts and paying for a guide, I cannot seem to find the correct settings: every different combination of settings I try gives me less than 10sec recording time...

To be clear, I want to:
-Shoot either 48fps or 60fps (at 1080p or 800p respectively) on my 5D3 (fw1.2.3) with 3x3 pixel binning
-Shoot continuous (or for at least a minute)
-Have a real-time preview (either on-camera screen or external HDMI screen)

Is this possible and what are the specific settings I need to use?

Thank you in advance!!

Jacob

I'm also on a 5D3, 1.2.3 FW, and I can shoot crop_rec_4K  at 48p 3x3 for about 1 minute before I drop frames.  Here's my setup:

- I'm using a Sandisk Extreme Pro 128GB 160MB/s card.
- Using the March 10th experimental build
- I only load the minimum modes required. (mlv_lite, crop_rec, mlv_snd)
- I'm setup as NTSC, 720p mode.
- In the MLV RAW menu, preview is set to "realtime".
- I always keep my camera on 12-bit lossless.  But I think when you go into the 48p 3x3 mode, it automatically changes to 14 bit lossless.
- I have overlays turned on, with only RAW histogram showing.
- I change the aspect ratio to 2:1  (48p 3x3 isn't true 16:9 ratio anyway, and I prefer some of the black bars)

Also have a SmallHD Focus monitor.   When in the 3x3 mode, the liveview preview is cropped in and stretched vertically, but realtime. (also offset more towards the top half of the frame -- anyone know if it can be centered or moved ??)

The cool thing is you can half press the shutter button, you will see the correct framing (non-realtime low fps).  However with an external monitor, the realtime cropped preview will always show on the monitor so you can pull focus, and you can half press the shutter to see the framing on the camera's LCD.

The extra cool thing if you have a monitor like the SmallHD Focus, you can you set it to Anamorphic mode 1.66X, and it will un-stretch the liveview so it looks normal!

Hope this can help someone.  Goodluck!   ;)

Thanks JCut,

I will send him your settings.  The problem could be that he is using a slower card and loading to many modules on it.  Did you test synchronisity between sound and video already?  That would be helpful too.

I'm currently on vacation, with no computer to check MLV files... But I'm recording lots of stuff with this mlv lossless + mlv sound build, so I'm crossing my fingers everything will be fine  ;)

I should be able to report back by this weekend!

Can you try also h264 proxy recording on canon 5dmk3?

I did get some sound issue with that. ( static noise )

Hi Lars,

I tried out the proxy recording lossless with sound, and I'm having similar problems as you.

1. 14 bit lossless, proxy record on = static on the sound file

2. 12 bit - same static

3.  I also experienced a different issue when proxy record was on. After a couple seconds the recording would stop and I would get a message "recording automatically stopped" or something like that. I also saw a red message flash briefly saying "sound failed to stop"

At what resolution did you test the 12bit Loss Less, with MLV Sound?  Did you also try the Crop mode at 3K and 24fps?  Could you also check the sound recording in the 14/12/10 bit uncompressed modes in the MLV-recording module?

I will ask my friend to repeat the tests on his 5D3, maybe with a faster CF card and see if he can get rid of the "sound failed to stop" message.

Thanks for your important feedback, JCut !

Hi IDA_ML , I tested 12 bit LL with MLV Sound at 1920x1080.  (wider aspect ratios work also).  I didn't try out the 3K mode yet... However, I checked the sound recording in the 14/12/10 bit uncompressed modes in the MLV_REC module:

1.  14 bit uncompressed, 1920 x 1080 @ 24p - Sound works, no unusual messages
2.  12 bit uncompressed, 1920 x 1080 @ 24p - Sound works, no unusual messages
3.  10 bit uncompressed, 1920 x 1080 @ 24p - Sound works, no unusual messages

As for your friends "sound failed to stop" message, I'm using Sandisk Extreme Pro 160MB/s CF 128GB cards.  Does he have any other modules loaded ?  For Lossless MLV , I only have MLV_LITE, Crop_Rec, MLV_SOUND, and FILE_Man modules loaded, nothing else.

First post!  :)  I've been using ML on my 6D for a couple years mainly for photos (checking raw histogram to ETTR), discovered how incredible ML raw video is, and bought a used 5D3 after hitting the SD slot limits of the 6D...

I'm currently using ErwinH's Oct23 build MLV Lite LL with sound on my 5D3, firmware 1.1.3, and it works for me.  I haven't experienced the issue reported by IDA_ML :

1.  I only tested with 12bit Loss Less, with MLV Sound working, continuous recording

2.  I can start/stop recording fine when recording @ 24p.  No errors/messages.

3.  I'm using MLVFS (32-bit - thanks to BouncyBall!) directly editing the MLV with Davinci Resolve 14.

4.  I also tried some crop mode recording in 1920x1080 @ 48p  and 1920x800 @60p , and it works with sound as well.  However, since I run it with realtime color LiveView, I get dropped frames after some time.  I noticed when editing those clips that stopped due to dropped frames, the sound cuts out a couple seconds before the the video cuts out.  I dunno if that could be related to the "audio failed to stop" message or not.

Thank you all for everyone's incredible work!  Magic Lantern keeps getting better and better!
