Share Your Videos / Re: Croatia - Makarska - in 5.7K
August 29, 2021, 01:15:41 PM
Well done! Makes me try to do some bigger project with 5.7K though the post-processing time I would have to invest is freighting me (especially I would most likely end up in Resolve for even lightweight grading). How long did it take you to get from raw footage on a disk to final video?
Btw. I assume you used a gimbal or glidecam of some sort?

Try the following:
Install the latest driver for your GPU.  Go to Preferences -> User -> Uncheck "Stop renders when a frame or clip cannot be processed"
If that does not work, please try the "Open CL" in the GPU Processing option.
Thanks for the tips. I did a few quite a few tests of MLVFS/Resolve with different storage tiers (CF, SSDs) and got the following results:
* "Stop render" setting disabled helps to avoid crashes that normally interrupt processing and ending with a message "Render Job failed as the current clip could not be processed. The clip <clip_name> could not be decoded correctly. Please check if the clip is still available on the drive".
However the result in a final output still containing glitches - inserts of previous frame few frames later or a red screen frame with exclamation mark road sign and Media Offline message.
* Open CL looks to be doing a better job. However I believe this only as the render speed drops.
With Open CL 3K footage I get 10fps render, while CUDA does 15 or more fps. Also CUDA does way better job with a playback (especially combined with the fastest local SSD), that can go up to 24fps. If I drop render speed tp 10fps in CUDA, I get no crashes either and consistent footage. Should be fine, just a shame cant use all the horse-power of the computer.

Never had that issue and it is not likely to be attributed to MLVFS.   Resolve needs a powerful graphics card with at least 2 GB of GPU RAM to handle such files properly.  With my laptop render speed often drops to 0,5 fps but it typically runs without crashes.  When you are ready with grading and editing try to set your export options to Quicktime -> MPEG and it should run fine.
Was never an issue on my old i5 is it was CPU limited. The new laptop (XPS 7950) is i7 9th gen, 32 GB Ram and GTX 1650 4GB ram so its way faster. I can render 15fps but there must be something with Resolve that causes it to crash or drop frames.

I think the softness might be related to YN TC 2x- not a greatest glass but wanted to give it a try (like the shot with big sun setting on the horizon at 2:35). Might have also not nailed the focus a few times and there is no sharpening in post. The wide angle lens looks sharper to me e.g. 0:55. Lets say I went for a softer cinematic look ;)

Yes, I should definitely try 3.5K plus the new full frame anamorphic mod. I found 3K (3072x1320) very stable at 14bit and the aspect ratio is good. I did not care for shallow depth of field. What exactly the resolution is for 3.5K, the aspect ratio and bit rate that works best? How long can you record for before it crashes and you need to take out the battery to start going again?

I hope so too. Many Australians have relatives overseas so this is dear to our hearts too.

MLVFS is a love/hate relationship. For grading I prefer this (especially for highlight recovery) over exporting to ProRes or adjusting in MLVApp. However when I generate the final output I need to reduce speed to even 5fps max speed for 3K footage as otherwise it just crashes. I think it is I/O that does not handle it. Its definitely better in 1080p but I might get dropped frames in render unless I limit to say 20 fps or less. Tried directly from CF card (Lexar UDMA7 1066x with Transcend USB3 reader), SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD but ultimately the most reliable is my SSD in my laptop.

Made this video to document the day the second lockdown lasting 112 days is finally getting lifted.
Celebration of a joy of simple things in life, like spending more than 1h outside and finally being able to see friend (incl. those living more than 5k away).

Filmed with 5Dmk3,
3072x 1320, upscaled to 4K.
200-800 ISO, 23.976fps, 1/50 shutter speed
Canon 70-200 f2.8 + TC 2x
Canon 16-35 f4

Processed in Davinci Resolve 16 via MLVFS
Color grading: DCI-P3 Fujifilm 3513DI D60 LUT at 30% opacity (still contemplating whether I like version with the the LUT or softer and more vibrant original colours).
Raw setting: Color Space Rec.709, Gamma sRGB, minor tweaks in exposure, highlights and shadows
no sharpening or noise reduction added in post.

EDIT: Uploaded version with added sharpening as suggest be a few here. Thanks for pointing this out. It does make a visible difference. (plus highlight recovery setting I forgot to use in a few scenes, like the sunset one)

for reference older version without sharpening (or rather with default 10% in raw processing in Resolve).

This is really good, loved the choice of music. Great job!
Thanks for the inspiration. Can't wait to go out and try the new mod myself... hopefully will see soon the end of the lockdown also down here in Melbourne. Enjoy your summer in Paris.

P.S. I do also shoot hand held or rather strap-supported I should say. It gives IMHO way more natural looking footage when used properly. Even the walking shots look good, as long as there is no crazy jitter shake which is easy to avoid with stabilised lens.

Really nice footage. I especially liked scenes at 3:45 and 4:07 for their composition and the light.

5dmk mlv provided only as as cdng as the mlv file were too big. EOS R C-Log original files.

enjoy.

I agree with you nikki.
EOS R is very practical with it autofocus. But then again iphone is even more practical and has IQ is great for video (hdr).
Been shooting quite a bit with EOS R over the last month and it is indeed nice, but the sharpness in HD compared to Raw is not the same (worse). 4k looks great, especially if you use log. Colors are also not a match, but are not bad at all. Its just once you use raw, its hard to get back.
Also worth to note timelapse, while R offers built in timelapse movie, the image SOOC is what you get. There is no intervalometer available for normal timelapse photos. While 5d3 with ML has it and images I used to get after pp were amazing.
I will most likely keep using 5d3 raw for special projects but for most of my personal candids R seems much easier to capture the moment.

Canon CLOG seems to respond well to color corrections (as per my video above). The bit rates are indeed high:

  • 4K @ 23.976 fps - 489,811 kbps
  • HD @ 59.94 fps - 185,304 kbps
  • HD @ 23.976 fps - 95,104 kbps

Re: Higher contract scenes.
I was thinking of doing part two with more lab-like\extreme tests but for a start the choice I made is more or less the type of scenario I use the camera for.
Honestly not sure what the result might be compared to RAW. To get full DR EOS R must be at ISO 400. Since log does not apply noise reduction this would mean more noise than 5d3 at ISO 100. On the other hand EOS R is a better sensor (at least when using for photos), hence I expect If I pull shadows EOS R might be way better.
I also tried NeatVideo and results where amazing. Will post when I have some time to put a video with it (I am not a youtuber, but a hobbyist so time is limited).

Re: Log vs No-Log
The test scenes I used in the video do benefit from CLog (over std profile). I shot a couple of clips with log and non-log next to each other and so far prefer log much more (when edited). This including people. However I am yet to experiment more with faithful or natural profiles for run and gun (handy C3 EOS R profile). Even when the scene fits the histogram without clipping, when shooting CLog I can get much nicer results in the end by playing with highlights and reducing contract from shadows/people faces. At least so far- just a few weeks of use.
I know many people get beautiful results with non-log footage but at least I would use natural profile. You may be right with the midtones but this often comes at the cost of shadows and highlights. The video of the guys arguing not to use log is very contrasty. Not my style. See typical footage from Alexa or RED and here is your reference point. At least for me. Also Canon is not GH5 for Log.
Coming from everything RAW (magic lantern) I am used to longer workflow but its like with RAW photos, the benefits are higher than effort.
Need to do more tests to decide what works for me.

P.S. to me RAW footage when exposed properly so far is still superior, in a way colors are represented, lower contrast that I can do a lot with. I do acknowledge that many test videos I saw on the web either people overuse grading or butcher skin tones do not give justice to actual potential the RAW video has. For 5d3 not using RAW always got me very soft image and since there was Magic Lantern option I found no reason not to use it. My learning curve with RAW took a bit to get where I wanted to be so giving myself a bit of time to work out log and non-log options and decide when to use which one.

Been craving for AF in video for a while and once I saw what firmware 1.4 for EOS R can do and recent discounts I made a jump. I got quite good with manual focus but filming running kids with aperture lower than f4 was really hard. I couldn't find any video quality comparison of clog to raw footage from 5d mk III, so now that I got it I made one.

My observations are CLog does not match Raw but can get close. EOS R colors are cooler and require adding more magenta. Overall CLog can look pretty good in its own way but matching to RAW requires playing with quite a few dials.
Not regretting getting EOS R but cant get myself to sell my 5Dmk3 either. At least not yet. The price point is so low that I might just keep it. Raw is Raw :)
Btw. 4K crop is actually not a bad thing. I used ML 3x crop mode a lot and EOS R 4K cropped plus center 1080p crop gives me the same result. This is when I use a single prime for events and can record a scene from a distance to get two different views with lightweight setup and high aperture for low light situations, e.g. using 50mm f1.8 or 35mm f2.

Hope you find this informative.

I would say mostly my lack of skills :)
There are a few transitions I just don't know how to apply in Resolve. Blends, stop image overlay with new clip, zoom in and out, so just used Premiere out of box features. I actually have been just learning how to incorporate transitions and hopefully not overdoing it. I usually avoid any transitions.

Other thing is I export graded individual clips as HQ h264 so its lightweight for editing later (I use i5 8GM RAM laptop from 2015) instead of rendering raw each time. Hence transitioning to Premiere afterwards was easy.

shot with 5d3 and just one lens canon 35mm f2 IS.
all hand-held, no additional image stabilization added in post, no noise reduction.
settings: most footage using 1080 24p raw, few shots with 3k Raw, close ups with 3x zoom
ISO 100, F2, shutter 1/48
color graded: Davinci Resolve
editing: Premiere Pro

a short timelapse captured at Gold Coast, Australia.
Shoot raw with ML timer feature, graded with LR, edited in Davinci Resolve 14.

Thanks for the tip Steve.
It is actually not that crooked as it looks as this is a coast line that gives such an impression.

Looking forward to your video from Gold Coast!

This is my second video testing ML raw workflow over the longer period of shooting. Footage captured over 4 days probably total of 200GB. Final compilation of 5 minutes from selected clips. Handheld (no IS) or on a tripod.
Edited and stabilized in DavinciResolve 14 beta, Graded with EOSHD LUT. Workflow with MLVFS. Card Lexar Pro 1066 UDMA7.
Any feedback welcome.
