General Chat / Re: Panasonic GH5 or Canon 5D Mark III?
October 13, 2018, 07:22:32 AM
Another alternative thats just been released is the Black Magic 4k 'Pocket' Cinema Camera. Seems good value as its a lot cheaper than the GH5 and GH5s. 12 Bit 4K RAW as well as ProRes. You can use your Canon lenses with a speed booster.

I'm using MLV App on 5D2 footage and it works great. Thanks for all the hard work you guys have put into it and continue to do so.

Is there anyway of improving the highlight recovery? There tends to halo's around certain highlights when the slider is reduced.. It looks to me as if the highlight range is a little broad ?

Lightroom's highlight recovery works better on the exported DNG's.
Sorry about the rubbish image, but it shows what the issue is. Left, no highlight adjustment, Right  -100%

Shoot Preparation / Re: Milkyway

You can stack a series of single exposures, around the 10 - 20 second length for minimal star trailing, and use either  Photoshop and/or  Deep Sky Stacker (Freeware) to process them. Plenty of tutorials around on doing this. You wont get any more details in the image, but the noise will be considerable reduced allowing the processing to be pushed further to being out the detail.

You dont necessarily need a tracker for this as long as you shoot a separate exposure for the landscape (should you choose to include any).

You realise Resolve now has a built in editor, which isnt bad once you get use to it ?

General Help Q&A / Re: err 70, 5d mark ii

I had a 'broken' pin on the 5d2 and they can be quite difficult to spot without taking the camera apart. In my case it just slipped down into the connector by a small amount. The camera kept telling me there was no card inserted. With all the ML Raw footage I was shooting I probably got a bit clumsy putting the card back in. My own fault.

I hope it isnt the case with yours, but my 5D2 recently had a bent pin in the memory card connector. I tried to straight it with some jewellers tools but it broke off completely. Its now away being mended at great expense.

The symptoms were similar to yours, the camera wouldnt boot at all with a card in it.

The 5D2 syncs fine when using MLV

If you want to save a bit of money, but not compromise image quality - take a look at the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art as well.

The obvious answer is - take a look at the Phantom 4. Its camera can shoot with flat profiles (D-log is one).
The new DJI Mavic (probably the direct competitor to the Karma), from the reviews doest have the same image quality as the P4.

I feel such a noob. I was looking forward to spending a couple of free days setting up and playing around with ML Raw on my 5D2, but I cant even find any ML to download. The nightly build section is down, and the only other option on the download page is to the source code which I'd rather not compile myself, as its not something I'm not familiar with. Where are the the 'stable' versions? Thanks.
