Raw Video / Re: 10-bit / 12-bit RAW on 5D Mark III, possible yes or no?
« on: October 22, 2018, 01:49:38 AM »
Any suggestion for rewording or making it more visible?
Well, to me it wasn't clear that a special separate build is needed for 12-bit and 10-bit recording. It's basically just lower quality, I don't understand why a special build is needed for that. To me it sounds like a cam that shoots in 1080p, and if you wanna shoot 720p? You need other software for that.

just my 2 cents

Click on data format : 14 bit lossless
That option isn't there for me in the latest nightly build.

@Aeidxst

Download a build and install it from experiments page under "4K raw video recording; lossless compression" then you will get data format option in mlv_lite.
Oh I didn't know I need a custom build for that. Is that 10/12-bit build less stable than the regular latest nightly build?

Simple question: I'm using the latest nightly build for 5D3 and I don't need the 14-bit RAW. I'd rather go with 10/12-bit and net myself a bit more recording time. However, I can nowhere find the option to change the bitrate. See pic, I saw a pic of someone that's actually able to change it. Is it actually possible or not?

I was wondering, what would be the better option for the Panasonic S1? My two Canon L lenses with a lens adapter, or the standard lenses that will be released together with the S1? If it's the latter I'm definitely going to sell my 5D III including the lenses...

I had the same idea recently so I looked for tests on dpreview.
On high iso, even my 5D2 beats the GH5 so I'll go for an used 5D3 in your case.
The s1 seems to be interesting but his price with speedbooster in the first month of launching will be high ...

I see, but will there even be a speedbooster in the first month(s)? If yes, then I'm definitely getting it. I have yet to see what the Pana S1 is capable of but I'm expecting big things.

playback available with h264+raw workflow (read here https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=15108.msg206903;topicseen#msg206903). The best quality is with 5DmkIII but GH5 is good for features like IBIS+OIS, crop mode, V-log, autofocus, size of the body, 6K H265. But it's not raw and the sensor is m4/3 so the sensibility iso is not good. I just bought a new 5D3 (mine was broken last month) and I wait for Pana full frame S1
Pana S1 is also really interesting to me. I have 3 Canon L lenses though and I want to keep using them. But I heard the Pana S1 will have a specific mount which makes that not possible.

What'd you all advice?

General Chat / Panasonic GH5 or Canon 5D Mark III?
« on: October 08, 2018, 11:43:16 PM »
Hi all, quick question:

I have the option to choose between these two cameras. Recently my own 5DIII broke so I don't have a camera atm. I love the RAW video quality that ML provides for 5DIII, but I also love GH5's quality and its workflow. Personal downsides to ML RAW is the fact I can't properly play back footage. It's super annoying and my clients hate to see some pixelated black and white preview, or some preview in color that stutters like ****. I only do video, mainly music videos.

I already own two Canon L lenses, but that's easily solvable with a speedbooster.

Please help me choose :)

Raw Video / Re: 5D Mk III - completely glitched out clips
« on: February 16, 2018, 01:25:10 AM »
Alright, our tip jar wasn't filled since last summer ;)

Please find the recovered files: M13-1537.zip and M13-1538.zip.

Luckily, it was easier than I thought - the offsets are either 6 (12 bytes) for most frames or 3+7 (6+14 bytes) for a few of them; then, a script can look at these two sets of images and choose the one which is not "too red". Only one frame required manual tweaking - 622 from the second clip (there are a few pixels lost on the right side).

Reproduced the issue as well. Settings:
- mlv_lite with Framing preview enabled
- 60 FPS from 50, low light, actual FPS 60.024
- press zoom in and back (this one is important; I tried many times to reproduce by going to PLAY mode and back, no success)
- in this state, real-time preview (rendered by Canon code) looks clean (!)

It's not the CF card (100% sure about that).
That's awesome of you, thank you. Here's the rest: https://fil.email/2kbKnycE

I'll definitely donate, as you basically saved my life when all those clips will be saved.

Really, I'll owe you big time.

Ehh ok?

Have you read about PAL and NTSC? NTSC support 60fps, i guess you have your camera setting on PAL?
Yep, had it on PAL. Just changed it to NTSC, hope this problem never occurs again.

-snip-
So, could I pay you to fix it to me? I'm very a-technical and there's no way I'd ever be able to do this myself.

Or anyone who can help me with this? I'll pay.

Edited the post - you can recover half of the frames with some tinkering.

ISO had nothing to do with frame corruption - the low ISO is the reason you've got so much noise (since the exposure time was pretty much maxed out) ;)

(already explained why it happens; read the link above)

Though, before increasing ISO, you should have considered recording at 30 FPS and using a higher exposure time.

Try using 60 FPS from Canon menu.
There is not 60 fps in the Canon menu:

Also, would you accept this?

I can pay you to recover my footage, if you would allow me to. Would you accept this? I really have a big problem if I can't recover this footage.

Thanks for your reply. However, I have no clue what everything you says means. I am very a-technical and I have no clue how to fix this myself. I can pay you to recover my footage, if you would allow me to. Would you accept this? I really have a big problem if I can't recover this footage.

Why not from Canon menu? What was the FPS set in Canon menu?

Managed to get this and this (first two frames), but each frame seems to require manual adjustment - notice they are not aligned horizontally. Can probably be automated, depending on how important the footage is.

BTW - next time you should considered using a higher ISO.
The settings in my Canon menu were 1280 x 720, 50 fps, ALL-I, and I put fps override to 60.

So, you're saying these corrupted files are fixable? I would kill to get this fixed.

Also, has my ISO anything to do with this? I didn't use higher ISO because I was afraid of noise.

And how can I avoid this problem in the future?

Raw Video / 5D Mk III - completely glitched out clips
« on: February 14, 2018, 12:20:13 PM »
Hi everyone,

I encountered a devastating problem. A lot of my footage became completely glitched out.

It seems like this problem is similar to one of my older problems: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19108.0

First, here are my settings:

I'm recording 14-bit RAW video at 1920 x 490, 60 fps through fps override (I'm going to stretch it to 1920 x 817 in post to get proper 2.35:1 resolution). There are no other ML features being used, except the mlv_lite and mlv_play. I'm using the latest build (February 4th 2018 on 1.1.3).

I'm using a Canon 5D Mark III, with 50mm 1.2 and 24-105mm 4.0 lenses, using SanDisk Extreme PRO as storage (64GB, 160 MB/s). No external monitors connected.

This is in my ML folder > Settings > MLV_LITE.CFG

# Config file for module mlv_lite (MLV_LITE.MO)

raw.video.enabled = 1
raw.aspect.ratio = 6
raw.write.speed = 7938

Yesterday I recorded some (very important) footage. When on the set, I used the magnify button a lot to make focusing easier. When zoomed in I could see some glitches, but when zoomed out everything was fine, so I just started recording. Everything was also fine while recording.

I just converted all my footage to .dng sequences using MLVFS. A lot of footage became completely glitched out. See pic related. About 30% of all the clips I shot turned into pic related.

What caused this, and what can I do about this? Can I still save my 'corrupted' files/footage?

Here are some of the original MLV files that got ruined.

1080p, 48 fps uncompressed 14-bit RAW with Nightly Build?

1920 x 1080 x 14 x 48 / 8 = 174,184,400 Byte/s =  166.1 MByte/s

Nope, won't do continuous.
I see. Then what's the difference between the nightly build and the experimental build?

Has the experimental build just been made for the sake of continuous 48fps recording?

Maybe 60fps needs to be set in Canon menu?
If I do that my max vertical resolution wil be 648 or so, which means I'd have to stretch (something I wanted to avoid since I don't want to lose image quality).

Also, could you clarify on this: I just tested the latest official build for 5D Mark III, and I figured I could also record 48fps with it. So why would I go for the other experimental build...?

The experimental build at

https://builds.magiclantern.fm/experiments.html

will get you 48fps at 1920x1040. Seems to work fine in my brief tests.
So I'm testing right now. The max. fps I can get is 40,201. Even if I put the fps override at 48fps, the actual fps is still stuck at 40,201.

Tested this at 1920x1032, doesn't seem to work. I'm using a SanDisk 64GB 160 MB/s CF card, so that can't be the problem either.

Can anyone help me out? I was planning to shoot with this tomorrow...

EDIT: I just tested the latest official build for 5D Mark III, and I figured I could also record 48fps with it. So why would I go for the other experimental build...?

Or 45p @ 1080p. Even the 60p @ 1920x800p is still usable when stretched to 1080p in post. If I were you I'd scoop up a used 5D3 body while you can before their street prices go up again.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B007FGYZFI/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=all
Yeah, I know I can stretch 1920x800 to 1920x1080, but I'd rather keep the original proportions/dimensions.

But it isn't possible in an official nightly build?

And will 1920x1040 at 48fps allow me to record continuously?

Hi, I've got a couple of questions. I can't seem to find simple answers to this, I'm sorry if it bothers some of you. I tried my hardest Googling this, but couldn't find simple answers. I'm also a big noob when it comes to tech.

Small introduction: I've been shooting in RAW with a 5D Mark II for a few years now. Always recorded 1856x1044, and upscaled to 1920x1080. When I wanted to do something with slomo, I always had to use Twixtor for it. But I'm hesitating to buy a Mark III for cheap, and I'm having questions regarding slow motion.

I'm reading everywhere that the Mark III can RAW record at 50fps and 60fps. Can it also RAW record at 48fps? And if yes, what max. resolutions with (and without) continuous recording?

I'm asking because 24fps in the end is my favorite frame rate. And with that in mind, 48fps is way easier to manage. I'd really love to shoot high fps footage, hence my hesitation to buy the Mark III. But I really want to be sure before buying it. I hope anyone can clarify.

Thanks in advance.

Raw Video / Re: Realtime video playback?
« on: May 04, 2017, 11:12:38 PM »
Use raw_twk module. Also black and white should be almost realtime on the 5D2, even without raw_twk.

If not, run a benchmark to see if your card reads slow or something.
I can't manage to find the raw_twk module. Where do I find it?

Also, what do you mean with the black and white? Do you mean it plays back faster when recorded in black and white? Or do you mean it plays back faster when the preview is in black and white? If the latter, how do I make the preview black and white?

Thanks in advance.

Raw Video / Realtime video playback?
« on: May 03, 2017, 11:02:53 PM »
Hi,

I've started using the mlv_play function recently, but I can't get it to play back my footage in realtime. In fact, it plays at about 2 fps, something that's rather useless to me. Is there a way to make it play back realtime? Can't I lower it the playback quality so it's able to play back realtime? These are my settings, in case it matters:

I'm recording 14-bit RAW video at 1856 x 1044, 23,976 fps. There are no other ML features being used, except the mlv_lite and mlv_play.

I'm using a Canon 5D Mark II, with 50mm 1.2 and 24-105mm 4.0 lenses, using SanDisk Extreme PRO as storage (64GB, 160 MB/s). No external monitors connected

This is in my ML folder > Settings > raw_rec.cfg.

# Config file for module mlv_lite (MLV_LITE.MO)

raw.video.enabled = 1
raw.write.speed = 7335

Yes, I tried Googling, but I haven't managed to find anything. Thanks in advance. I appreciate your help a lot.
