This seemed like a good place to share this deal: http://slickdeals.net/f/8628274-canon-black-eos-rebel-sl1-w-18-55mm-lens-249-00-walmart-b-m-only-ymmv

I picked up an SL1 kit with the standard 18-55 USM lens for $250 as a replacement for my t3i that has been having some issues recently. Very pleased so far, and the store I went to had at least one more kit in stock (Saratoga Springs, Utah).

Quick synopsis: visit http://brickseek.com/walmart-inventory-checker and enter the item number (23230825) and a zip code to check store stock. Note that this could be inaccurate, or that any stock showing could be a display model. I've also had good luck using Walmart's own store-specific stock system, which has been very accurate for me with this and some other deals I got in on: http://www.walmart.com/store/4438/search?dept=3944&dept_name=Electronics&query=sl1

I hope this comes in handy for someone.

Forum and Website / No Email to New Registrations
April 04, 2016, 04:42:55 PM
Someone just popped into the IRC chat reporting that new forum registrations aren't being sent an activation email. I tested it myself with a new username and email address and have yet to get a message after 20 minutes or so.

Hopefully this can be addressed soon.

Truth be told, it was the missus... but even I didn't know about some of the basic preventative best practices (like battery pull if anything goes wrong, wait to eject the SD card, etc.), so I don't point fingers.  ;)

Quick update: a1ex took some time to troubleshoot the problem with me, but we made little progress. The shooting options now appear on the screen when I use the creative modes (thanks to the menu option "LCD off/on btn" set to "Remains on", which I configured through a non-creative mode), but I still cannot use Liveview or reach the menus through the creative modes, which is where the firmware details and update options exist. The last thing attempted was to restore the camera defaults, but the same problem is there.

Hopefully restoring the ROM backup will work out if nothing else does the trick.

Any recommendations for me? I'm hoping to have my camera back up and running for some upcoming events, and it's a bummer that I can't record video or use manual mode.

Out of semi-desperation, I tried some of the same steps I attempted earlier without success. The tough part is that I can't manage to reach the Canon menu where you can check the firmware version and start an update, which seems like it would help immensely.

Yes, I do have both ROM0.BIN and ROM1.BIN copied to my computer from one of my SD cards. I couldn't manage to find a way to restore them, however.

I've been a happy user of Magic Lantern on my T3i/600D for a couple years and never had any major issues until now. The camera was taken on a trip without me and came back nearly unusable with no obvious cause.

Firmware: 1.0.2
ML version: magiclantern-Nightly.2015Apr19.600D102.zip

Here's a brief symptom rundown:

  • Minus a blinking LED, the camera shows no signs of life on the "creative" modes (A-Dep, M, Av, Tv, P)
  • Movie mode displays in Liveview but does not record footage or allow access to any menus
  • I can reach the Canon and ML menus from the other modes
  • The EOS utility connects but does not show Liveview or execute the menu options; the camera status is simply listed as "busy"
  • I found this post, which lists the same exact problems I've encountered (minus the final entry) with a different camera model: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=13748.0

Here are some of the solutions I've tried:

  • Removed battery and SD card
  • Booted without SD card
  • Removed battery grip, used OEM battery
  • Booted with alternate SD card with identical version of ML installed
  • Wiped SD card (64 GB) from Canon menu and rebooted
  • Changed Canon and ML settings via menus, including disabling all modules
  • Reset ML config files in alternate SD card (32 GB)
  • Ran the portable display diagnostic test (http://magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2296.0) which appeared just fine
  • Also ran ROM dumper from above link, which seemed to corrupt the alternate SD card
  • Formatted alternate SD card as Fat32 via PC

Unfortunately, none of the above steps has helped; the same issues persist. I wouldn't mind reinstalling the Canon firmware, but I've found no alternate way of doing it outside the Canon menu, which doesn't appear for me in the modes where it's needed.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
