Try to change the aperture in live view mode from magic lantern menu, I am sure it will work. You can not do it through controls on your body, at least not with exposure override on.

unfortunately further tests did not bring any improvement. The thing I still do not understand properly is card formatting (I've been using guiformat.exe to format in fat32 with allocation unit size 65536) and adjusting buffer size. 

dlrpgmsvc would you be so kind to explain this in more detail? How do you format on a PC and how do set the buffer to 64?

This is probably it. I've been using mlv all the time, because in my initial testing it had definately been more stable than raw rec. I've just tried raw rec again. First time approx. 200 frames vs. 700-900 I get from mlv, BUT second try resulted in 1930 frames. The recording stopped probably because the camera was getting too hot. I hope the temperature is to blame for the four corrupted frames I got in this 1930 frames attempt (one totally black, three with pink lines or rectangles and some small black rectangles). I will try again tomorrow. Thanks again.

@ dlrpgmsvc: Did you format your card in any particular manner? Any particular settings, or just ML default and global draw off while recording?

At 1920 x 1080 regardless of settings I try I am usually getting 32-39 s. of recording before a frame is dropped (occasionally a bit less, or a bit more) which is in line with the info displayed by ML while selecting this resolution. According to this information my write speed is 72-77 MB/s while I need 82.9 MB/s. for continuous recording.

Forgot to write I am always talking/writing about 23.976 fps 

Any suggestions?

@ moomilk: As far as I know H.264 offers just the two modes you have mentioned.

@ robertgl: Crop mode with a 64 GB Lexar x1066, no frames dropped, I am able to get: 1792 x 1080 and 1856 x 1044. Though I've never tried for longer than 5-6 minutes, fearing of overheating.
1856 x 1080 I get a dropped frame after a minute, or two. Do not know, if these are the best results obtainable. Probably not. I would appreciate any remarks from people who get better results on how they do it.

I am on May 3rd nightly and it works well for me - I have shot 15-20 minutes of raw already plus some .mov. Installed following all the procedures, including 50D in M mode with all settings reset to factory values. I am still a newbe with lots to learn.

By the way, can anyone knowledgable confirm that it is not possible to change any settings like aperture, shutter and ISO during recording (neither raw, nor mov)?

Another question crops up in crop mode - as I zoom-in with a lens (camera stationary, tripod mounted) the composition changes, i.e. my stationary subject which has been at the center initially, as I zoom-in slides to a corner. Has anyone got any solution?

Well, it seems 50D is capable of even more 

I have just managed to record 8393 frames (no dropped frames) at 1792 x 1080 at 23.976 fps (according to ML settings and MIRawViewer, but extracted dngs are 1784 x 1072).

I have spent more or less 30 - 40 hours shooting and processing video with 50D, mostly raw and thanks to your advise I am quite impressed with the results. My current simple and free workflow is: .mlv->raw2cdng.1.6.5.->RawTherapee 4.2.147->VirtualDub32bit->.avi

I would appreciate your advise on the following:

1. For upresing to full HD I use RawTherapee (Lanczos). I can't say I am unhappy with the results, but I wonder if there is a better and free way of doing so?

2. What do you use to view .avi files? I noticed that Windows Media Player shows warmer colors as compared to the original raw files and it also seems that color depth is inferior. Winamp on the other hand seems to show the right colors, as far as I can tell. Any suggestions?

Confirmed. I have just converted the files using raw2cdng.1.6.5. which resulted in 8957 consecutive frames.

One strange thing, though. MIRawViewer v.1.4.3 states: 1728 x 1080 23.976 FPS, 8957 frames, BUT when I open .dng in RawTherapee 4.2.147 the actual image size appears to be 1720 x 1072. Any ideas?

Regarding the video I am reasonably sure - I did not check the frame numbers (did not extract frames) for anything missing BUT the recording stops when a frame is dropped, doesn't it? I mean I have seen this message several times when trying to record at 30 fps and the recording would always stop  after a few hundred frames once the message was displayed. And I did not change any settings regarding this. I still have this video, so if there is anything you would like me to check, (even upload - but I do not know where to upload - it is almost 30GB - 8957 frames) then I will. I watched it through MIRawViewer. There is also a MRX file - I do not know what are the info inside, is there an information about frames ? Or is there any other method to check the frames apart from extracting and counting?

Canon 50D today, with Lexar x1066 64GB, in crop mode managed over six minutes with no frames skipped at 1728 x 1080, aspect 16:10, I stopped the recording myself.

Would someone pls. direct me to a thread explaining framing in crop mode? What I see is obviously not what I get...

It solved my problem! Til 5 minutes ago I though I had a poor card, as I could not reach the limits with my 50D - looking hard at your table I realised I had been shooting 30 fps and comparing it to your limits at 24 fps!

I have just started today with raw recording, not very successfuly though. I can not get auto iso working. I set it to auto, but when I go to live view, it stays at 100 or 200 with HTP on even if the scene is severely underexposed, same when recording raw video. Then when I check the settings, I see it reverted to 100, or 160 with HTP on.

Another question: In live view I can change aperture manually through camera body controls and I see the effect on the screen. When recording it seems changing aperture is not possible.

After a short session of googling, I think I'll go with rawtherapee - no time to try them all. I did look at the threads suggested over the last couple of days, so much usefull information there, but it is a little bit confusing for a newbie. I hope every time I re-read them, I will understand some more.

One more request, if I may (though OT in this thread). I am sure I read somewhere in the forum about a good practise to format CF card in a particular way to help the write speed and avoid stopping recording/dropped frames. Unfortunately, now that my card arrived I am not able to find it  . Would someone please direct me to the right thread?

Ok, sorry for the confusion, I meant raw video editing. So if I understand correctly, recording raw video with Canon 50D does NOT produce a sequence of raw images, but a single file (or several files, as I read that sometimes you have to join them), from which raw images have to be extracted for processing?
Can't check it myself now, because I am still waiting for a fast card to arrive...

I have Win 7 64 bit, Intel i5-3570K, 8GB RAM, no GPU (Intel HD Graphkics 4000 integrated in CPU) - Resolve will not work, because HD 4000 is not compatible 

I tried VirtualDub and I am not impressed with color correction plug-ins I found, not to mention that most of them work only with 32 bit version of VD.

The only paid soft I have is Adobe Elements 6 with the latest COMPATIBLE ACR plug-in. I like it, but it seems that ACR allows only up to 200 raw files to load at the same time, so I can perform batch processing only on 200

I am just a beginner with ML, so sorry if this is a stupid question. I am looking for a simple workflow preserving as much quality as possible with freeware soft. I am wondering why nobody mentions Canon DPP software for adjusting raw files instead of exporting to DNG or CDNG and then adjusting?
