General Help Q&A / Re: 5D Mkiii record restart
February 13, 2015, 09:49:01 AM
i am so happy I have stumbled on this thread! The auto record and LCD off options are the only reasons ive kept hold of a mkii for the last year or so, now I have upgraded my mkiii ML and got these fantastic features I can now sell the mkii. I bloody love ML!

I've noticed when copying footage from multiple cards that I am getting files on one card that have exactly the same file numbering as on the previous card. Is this something that others have experienced?
#3
i appreciate your reply. I dont know what it is with the ML forums but i can never seem to find the answers to my questions like I can on other forums.. maybe it goes over my head. :S
#4
I literally never get any replies on this forum. Don't think I'll bother

in fact.. after copying the images and video to my pc and deleting them via card reader, when I now insert the SD card back into the camera it did not turn on at all. I plugged it back into my PC and deleted the DCIM and MISC folders and it now SEEMS to boot up and work ok.. ML certainly loads but I have a very important filming task tomorrow so if anybody can confirm if there is a way to just check the install is working and I haven't caused a problem that would be much appreciated.

hi all I usually have my ML installed on my sd and record video to CF card but I have just noticed that I must have forgotten to put my CF card in the camera so as a result ML is on the SD (seems to work fine) but also my images and videos are on the same card.

Is it safe to do things this way or should I use the SD just for ML? In which case do I just delete the DCIM and MISC folder and leave ML. 5D3-113-boogflag.fir, autoexec.bin and ROM.DAT?

OR

Do I leave the DCIM and MISC folder on the SD card?

I read about it I format the card ML will install back into the card on its own but I suspect this is for the stable release and not the 5D3 version is that correct?

Thanks in advance

thats done it.. thanks Walter. Totally my fault as I'd changed something from stock. Thank you. It is still flashing but less than it was, the occasional quick flash every 5 seconds or so. Norhing that can be done about this I assume? I noticed it less when it was the blue led on my mk2.

Just a thought on the absence of digital audio gain... I used to record everything a little bit quiet on my mkii and then apply a +12dB gain to my right channel. That way if there was a lot of noise I'd fill left in my editing suite (dual mono sound, but not clipping) and if it was a quiet scene and I wanted to raise the audio I'd fill right (still dual mono but not necessary to audio gain in post) and I loved this system, enabling me to theoretically record 2 audio tracks at different levels and know that in most cases, one or the other will be suitable.

Now, I know I'm not used to use auto level on my mk3 because of the AGC creating a hiss in silent/quiet situations, but assuming ML disables the AGC as it did with the mkii and other cameras, is it now ok to leave the camera in auto mode for audio without the risk that would have been there without ML installed?

red led flashing when the camera is not doing anything.. is this its way of telling me it's on but not recording, as I'd really like to disable this most annoying of features but cant see where to in the manual. I'd like my red led to only flash when recording/accessing the card.. not all the time (especially in photo mode!)

I appreciate you taking the time to write that reply and find those threads dmilligan.
Although I didnt understand 30% of what I read, the features grid is very handy and I wish I'd seen it before as audio gain and movie restart are both very important to me. Nevermind.

On the temperature issue I assume ML doesnt make the cam run any hotter than stock fw, its just as the indicator is there it worries me slightly. I guess I'll learn to relax when it's red which it seems like its going to be all the time if it reaches 66 degrees just sitting on my desk in a cool office at home.

I'm still none the wiser on point 4 about formatting the card. The links you posted seem to relate to startup delay and the bootflag. I assume these two things are related but could you explain how?

again no tsure on point 6 about the location of the magic zoom button, am I right in saying at the moment it NEEDS to be the magnifying glass button and this can't be changed until this button assignment feature that some are requesting has been implamented (if possible) is that correct?

General Help Q&A / Re: Average Temp Of 5D MK3?
December 04, 2013, 01:17:07 PM
I was concerned about this too ,mine shot from 33 to 56 degrees in 15 mins and I switched it off thinking was something wrong. Is there an official word on what is an acceptable temp and also will it just auto shut off when it gets too hot or are we at risk of damaging our cameras?

well i've gone ahead and taken the risk, but a few questions if I may..

1) when I press info on a ML screen (I used to get ML help files) it says help files not found.. I also had a few funny things go on during install (no message about bootflag, it was a graphical glitch and just showed lots of boxes of dots instead.. not sure if this has caused it..?)

2) in the audio menu there doesnt allow me to adjust the audio level, just by the looks of it the level of the cameras beeps and playback?

It's almost like there is a way to see an expanded version of the menu in full and I'm looking at a 'lite' version but I cant find the manual in the download

3) oh, also I just pulled my mic out of the camera when it was on and the whole cam shut down, now when I restart I get told cam was not shut down properly, skipping module checking. Also the temperature has been on the increase since I turned it on about 10 mins ago and has risen from 30 degrees to 45 degrees on the on screen display. Is this normal?

4) Finally, when I go to format card (the SD which has ML installed as I just realised video was being recorded there as well) I dont get the keep/remove magic lantern text. Is this no longer there?

5) In the text underneath when I hover over the movie tweaks option group it lists movie restart but when I go into it it only says movie logging, rec/standby notification, dim rec led, and force live view. Where is movie restart? is it automatically on?

6) I have a ROM.DAT still on the sd card.. is that meant to be there? I'm suspecting an incorrect install..

7) With the magic zoom during recording I seem to have to have it assigned to the zoom button on the left of the body which is useless to me or the zoomin (+) button which I can't see on the camera, is it the same button? I have assigned the standard canon zoom in to the set button and would like my magic zoom to work only during recording and be triggered by this set button, is that possible?

Not a great start..

I should say, I use ML now on my mkii all day long for 50 weddings a year and I haven't had a problem for at least 3 years so I'm not afraid of taking a small risk, I'm afraid of taking a big risk
#13
i know Walter, I know there is always going to be a risk with a stable version but without reading every post of every thread on every website concerning ML, I can't get a feel of how stable it is now. Yep, you scared me off.
#14
The thing I use most is probably crop marks. Looks like I'll just get the black electrical tape out and keep my eye on the ML website :(
#15
Right.. That might change everything then. What a total pain. Wish I'd read up before I bought the mkiii..

I don't understand if anyone prefers stability why even think about to use alpha stage software...

Well the stability is only crucial for 2 hours of an 8 Hour filming day. So if i can turn off ML at these points and then leave it on for the rest of the day when I short 10 second clips all day then it's fine. What's the worst that can happen.. I'll lose one ten second clip? Or will ML go down all guns blazing and spectacularly format my card? (that's not sarcasm, that's a question!)

#17
i'll be bu&&ered if i can find one
#18
fantastic, sounds perfect then. And this is the correct procedure to follow?

ok so you mean its fine to leave raw turned on for image settings?

How about just shutting down the cam and removing the SD card with ML installed. When I then boot up, will the camera boot without magic lantern? (albeit take 2 secs longer to start up?) and be as reliable as it can be?

Another question regarding stability..

At a wedding the ceremony and speeches are the two key moments for me in terms of stability, I can't afford a lock up or failure. If I were to save 2x CF cards (do I install ML on the cf card or do I install it on a single SD card and just change CF card to record video to) without ML installed, and just switch before speeches and ceremony, would my cam be just as stable as it would if I'd never installed ML in the first place?

edit: I've just read its ok to install ML to sd and record video to CF. In that case, would I just need to remove the SD card to boot without ML and guarantee stability?

One more question.. in this dvxuser ML raw guide (http://www.dvxuser.com/guides/ml_raw_guide_5DIII_full.pdf)

it says "5. In the Canon menus, set your photo mode to JPEG/S3 only (turn off RAW photo shooting). This frees up memory in
the camera, allowing for more Magic Lantern mojo to happen
in video mode."

Is that only necessary if shooting raw? I wont ever use raw but would really prefer to leave raw photo mode switched on incase I start taking photos and forget..

I appreciate the replies guys. I only have 4 or 5 weddings to film between now and April next year so I think I'll do those without ML to play it safe and hope a stable release is out by then. As long as one is being worked on and is looking likely then I'm happy... If it's not.. I really regret buying the mkiii!
#22
So that means the existing options aren't stable?
#23
Thank you so much for the link, I think all is clear now..

So it's a) install alpha, no raw, have to do firmware every time you turn the camera off

Or

B) set bootflag which increases wakeup time to 2 sec but means you don't need to install each time (I'llalso get raw vvideo access?)

I'm actually not bothered in raw at all but not sure if it'll devalue the camera by increasing the boot up Time. MMight be better for me personally to use alpha.. Is it any more or less stable than the raw version? Stability is crucial to me..
#24
As a bit of a newbie can I just chime in to ask if this understanding of the bootflag thing is correct..

You have to go to firmware and update until magic lantern installs every time you reboot the camera? Is that correct?  How long does this take? Would you expect that we won't ALWAYS have to do this?
#25
I still just can't get the dimensions right on my crop mark.. very frustrating..
