I still have the firmware, in fact I tried the 3 firmwares I had (every time I download an update, I keep the previous one, so I had one per year and I tried all of them and no one worked). I can do some tests on QEMU, but I will not be able to test it for real on the camera, I just sold it. :P

This issue makes me fear a lot for my camera by the way, to unstuck my camera (to be able to try the workaround) I had to remove the battery while the camera was telling me being in firmware update process...  ??? Hopefully it didn't bricked the camera!

OK. I found a workaround. If someone gets the same problem as me. this is how I managed to uninstall Magic Lantern:

My workaround is to redo the installation process from the beginning as if ML was never there, and when it saids it's already there and ask to shutdown the camera to keep ML or to wait to remove ML, just wait, it works.

  • Format a CF card on a PC using a standard formatting (no ML flagged filesystem).
  • Copy ML files (ML-SETUP.FIR, autoexec.bin, ML directory...).
  • Put the card on camera, set on the camera.
  • Go to firmware update, and ask to update the firmware, Magic Lantern will install itself, as if it was never there.
  • The camera reboots itself and Magic Lantern said the boot flag was already enabled and Magic Lantern is saying you can shutdown the camera if you want to keep Magic Lantern, of course, do not shutdown the camera. On the bottom of the screen, Magic Lantern is telling you to wait some second to disable boot flag. So do not shutdown the camera, just waits the countdown going to zero.
  • The camera reboots itself and disable the boot flag.
  • You can shutdown the camera, Magic Lantern is uninstalled.

Hi, I'm trying to uninstall Magic Lantern on a 5D2 Body, when I follow the instruction, and ask for firmware update, the "Loading..." screen shows up but it never disappear and the camera never reboots.

I watched some videos like this one and on every video I watch, the "Loading..." screen only displays itself for some seconds then the camera reboots to some disablement menu I never get in. On my end this is never happening, what's happening there?

Edit: I tried with different CF card, different battery (all being Canon genuine), and also some different ML versions (one from 2017, one from 2016, one from 2015) hoping it was a bug introduced in recent versions. I still can't uninstall ML.

This is a video based on raw samples from that repository:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m91LFSSNFMs

For this video I used the raw video sample recorded with the Astrodon-refiltered 5DM2, to showcase how well the whitebalance is recoverable. I did the raw processing on Darktable.

tried raw video yet?

You'll find samples on this repository, including raw video samples (both mlv+audio and mlvlite):
https://gitlab.com/illwieckz/illwieckz-camera-samples/tree/master
Note that every file published on that repository is distributed under CC0 license (some stuff can probably be uploaded to raw.pixls.us).

I will do 5D Mark III samples in august, I hope there will be astro samples this time.

Yes I made raw pictures (canon raw, dual iso raw, silent raw) and raw video of the same scene, left the unmodifed 5D2 with a Sigma 28-70/2.8, right the refiltered 5D2 with a Sigma 24-70/2.8, same settings for both. Now I have to upload all this stuff. :P

I just want to say I have on my hand a very rare modified 5D2 model I will sell soon (I will not put any link in this thread, and by the way there is currently no one yet :P ). It's a 5D2 with the standard sensor filter removed and replaced by an Astrodon one. Also, a thermal sensor with an external monitor was placed.

Unlike some other modification (like complete filter removal), the light path is not modified so autofocus is not broken while using standard lens. Also, even if the White Balance is completely modified (and the built-in Canon auto white balance system can't take any decent decision alone), it's still possible to do casual non-astronomical photo, adjusting the white balance the manual way (the easier way to set-it up is to shoot a white paper and ask the 5D2 to compute the white balance from it).

Just before selling it, I will do some reference pics (same settings, same lens, same scene) with an unmodified 5D2 and this modified 5D2, perhaps featuring some Magic Lantern features, and perhaps I will also do some reference thermal comparison comparing the added sensor value and the built-in sensor displayed by magic lantern.

The modification was made by the EOS for astro company. Badly, I have no one astronomical photo to show. The story was: I bought this body and bought the modifications 20 month ago. I was expecting doing the first photos with this body for about two week the last summer, but some change of schedule postponed them for one year. Since this time, I got better financial income, so I'm switching to 5D3. I will buy a 5D3 and buy the same modifications, so this one is on sale now (if you're interested, it's better to send me a private message, I sell that camera but it's not a selling thread).

That future modified 5D3 will be used on an hand-made guided telescope (diameter: 210mm, focal length: ≈1300mm, aperture: ≈6.5 ;D ). The mirror itself was hand-polished by my dad before I was born but it was re-aluminized some years ago. That telescope was built for 24x36 film, hence the need for full frame body, something that is rare in the astrophotography market. Since I already have a standard non-modified 5D3, I will probably do some comparison pic (with standard filter and Astrodon one).

When I bought the 5D2 modifications, I was not aware Magic Lantern was able to display temperature from a built-in thermal sensor, so I have a question: do you think the hardware sensor modification is that worth? If not, I will just buy the 5D3 Astrodon refilter modification, and not the thermal sensor for that next camera.

I made some astro pics with an unmodified 5D3 three years ago with this telescope, and I noticed the telescope is very sensible to any mechanical movement from the body mechanics, including the shutter. That's why Magic Lantern is a very good choice, thanks to silent picture mode (and why I prefer a modified Canon body instead of a Nikon D810a for example). Also, Magic Zoom can be very helpful (to zoom on small details, since the focusing process is entirely manual), and scripting abilities open great opportunities.

I will do the 5D2 reference pics in some days (because I don't want to postpone the selling). I will also do some references pics with the future modified 5D3, and of course, astronomical photos. So expect some additional comments in this thread later this summer or after this summer.  :)

Hi, this is some photos I shot two days ago to illustrate an advent/christmas article on my blog. Since I live in south of France I just had to go to the next church to shot some nice provencal crib pictures.

So, my purpose was to get some nice illustrations for a paper, not to get the best photo I can, and I did not have so much free time. I only took 4 pictures promptly and they not fully take advantage of the hardware, but they're nice anyway.

On this photo the dual-iso feature is used to not overexpose the background wall inside the barn:

Canon 5D Mark 3, Sigma 80mm ƒ/1.4, Magic Lantern dual-iso, crdhdr, Darktable 2

This two other photos are taken with dual-iso too but probably do not benefit a lot from that (except the first one was taken with another lens with twice less aperture, and perhaps it helps to get less noise):

Canon 5D Mark 3, Sigma 70-200mm (147mm) ƒ/2.8, Magic Lantern dual-iso, crdhdr, Darktable 2

Too bad I did'nt took my tripod with me, this picture would have benefit a lot from focus stacking (it's the worst one from my point of view):

Canon 5D Mark 3, Sigma 70-200mm (137mm) ƒ/2.8, Magic Lantern dual-iso, crdhdr, Darktable 2

This another photo relies on dual-iso too to get more details from the inside (but it was needed to keep a little the "too bright" effect to keep the natural feeling):

Canon 5D Mark 3, Sigma 80mm ƒ/1.4, Magic Lantern dual-iso, crdhdr, Darktable 2

All of these photo can be enlighten more and more thanks to dual-iso, but the purpose of these photos are not to reveal the potential of dual-iso mode and I wanted to keep the warm of a christmas crip shining in the dark and that atmosphere that enchant people a lot.

I'm sure it's possible to get the same shots without dual-iso, but dual-iso made it fast to do : I just had to enable dual-iso to get more amplitude in lightings, without having to take more time to adjust my camera settings, and since I was very short on my time, it's awesome. Magic Lantern not only helps to do better pic, it helps to save time ! And sometime it's good when you don't have the time for perfection. And that's the point I want to share with you : Magic Lantern not only helps to get better shots, it can save time ! ;-)

Hi, is there an easy way to detect a dual iso CR2 file?

I was looking at some exif metadata, I noticed that some dual-iso CR2 files I own have a different BaseIso and AutoIso exif value, so at first I was thinking it was a way to detect them, but in fact I have some non dual-iso CR2 that have also different  BaseIso and AutoIso values (why?) and some dual-iso CR2 that have the exact same value for BaseIso and AutoIso. So, this is not the way to get them.

Is there something in any metadata that can help me to detect them? I want to write a script that walk a directory full of CR2 files and convert dual iso ones automatically. Is it possible?  :)

OK. Thank you for the answer. That's hurt to learn, but it's good to know... :o

Hi, on the 5D2.212 Magic Lantern download page I read:

Quote

  • After opening the card door, always wait for LED confirmation (or for 5 seconds) before removing the card, even if your camera is turned off!!!
  • On this camera, removing the card too fast might cause permanent damage.

What does it means, is removing the card too fast might cause permanent damage to the card, or permanent damage to the camera, or both?

Ok, but at least, this is fun! (5DM3 here)

Hi, do you think this hack will allows us to run the same software on EOS DSLR than in Axiom cameras from Apertus, allowing to mutualize code and to have a real functionnal (able to shot) linux-based firmware on EOS DSLR? Since a linux based firmware is currently developped at least for Axioms, is it possible to port it to EOS DSLR?  ???
