Sorry for the delayed response! I need to setup my account so it sends e-mails when there are replies on the forum.

I have an update on this. Postproduction definitely has an effect on this issue. I have not figured out the perfect solution yet.

Process 1

Shot on a 5dmk3

Dropped raw file into raw2dng and converted to dng's. Dropped dng's into After effects as image sequence at 23.97 frames per sec. Created prores file and exported to premiere.

Pros - Able to color grade the raw files
Cons - Choppy footage

Process 2

Dropped raw file into raw2dng and converted to dng's and created a prores 422 automatically. I dropped the prores file into premiere to an uber quick and bad color grade.

Pros - Smooth Footage
Cons - Cannot color grade the raw footage

I have yet to try the lightroom technique.



@ Mimbik - I tried all sorts of frame rates and 23.976 fps had the best results. I was very particular on this when importing and rendering in ae and premiere.

@ Satis - Thanks! For that shoot I used a jib crane and a home made dolley.

@ Quickhitrecord - The seven second rule is something I will be definitely applying in the future. I thought a number of the shots were fairly close to that.

@ JimmyD30 - The footage didn't seem to be a different duration while editing.


Unfortunately that 5dmk3 was a rental from borrow lenses so I probably won't drop any more coin to problem solve the issue until I purchase one in the future or just get a video camera. However I will start experimenting with my 5dmk2's raw capability since the workflow is pretty much the same.

After watching and reading a number of tutorials I felt fairly confident with how to properly shoot and do post with the ML hack. However my finished product plays back choppy and I cannot figure out why. I'm primarily a photographer however have been getting more into video so I'm trying to figure out if it's shooting settings, shooting technique, or post production that is the issue... Any feedback in helping me diagnose this issue would be greatly appreciated!

I rented a 5dmk3 with ML from Borrow lenses. It came with a 128gb card with 1000x write speed. I shot at 1920x1080 in 24p, @ 1/50 per second.

For Post I did:

converted the .raw files with raw magic lite to cinema dngs. Imported them as image sequences into After Effects. The comp settings were 1920x1080, 23.976 fps, full resolution. I exported the comps as prores 4222 hq sequences at 23.976 fps. I then imported them into Adobe Premiere with the comp settings: 1920 X 1080, 23.976 fps, and then exported as H.264, Youtube HD preset 1920x1080, 23.976 fps.

Am I missing something? Your thoughts please.
